A camp built by students and volunteers spreads over Southern Methodist University(SMU). The affordable1 are designed to be used by the poor as well as survivors of war and natural disasters.
“By the time 2020, there’s going to be about 1.7 billion people living in slums(貧民窟) so we would like to2 change,” says Stephanie Hunt, co-founder of the Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanities at SMU. The institute, which3 build the village on SMU’s campus, was established to solve problem of the poor in the United States and around the world through engineering, and the free4.
The goal is not just to5 lives, but to change the victims’ lives. The Institute hopes some entrepreneurs(企業(yè)家) might program and6 some money with these ideas. One of the structures in the SMU village was built with bricks made7 from recycled plastic bags.
They’re8 together with heavy wires. Harvey Lacey, father of two college-aged sons, including one here at SUM, heard about this project and9 his invention. It’s a heavy-duty, hand-crank compactor(手動(dòng)壓縮機(jī))that anybody can use to form the big bricks he calls Ubuntu Blox.
“The advantages are that these10 weigh less than two pounds. They’re very, very11 These things can go for many generations of housing, ”says Lacey, who is 12 the design. Anybody can follow his online plans to13 the compactor that turns plastic bags into bricks.
On this warm day, it’s14 inside the Ubuntu Blox hut, thanks15 to the thick plastic insulation(絕緣). Kenyan16 Ronald Omyonga, visiting the global village before returning to his native Africa, says his country is full of these recyclable bags. With Lacey’s design, he says that litter could be transformed into17 housing. He dreams of other18 too.
“Look at the Harvey Lacey hut, as a means of creating19 ,”says Omyonga.“Leaning the environment, and turning20 into something that can form houses, not just for the poor.”

An amazing teacher
Years ago a John Hopkins professor gave a group of graduate students this task: Go to the slums(貧民窟). Took 200 boys, between the ages of 12 and 16, and 1 their background and environment, then 2 their chances for the future.
The students, after consulting social statistics, talking to the boys, and collecting much data, concluded that 90 percent of the boys would 3some time in prison.
Twenty-five years later 4 group of graduate students was given the job of 5 the prediction. They went back to the same area. Some of the boys---by then 6---were still there, a few had died, some had moved away, but they got in touch with 180 of the 7200.They found that only four of the group had ever been sent to 8.
Why was it that these men, who had lived in a breeding place of crime, had such a surprisingly good record? The researchers were 9 told,“Well, there was a teacher…”
They pressed(追問(wèn))further, and found that in 75 percent of the cases it was the same woman. The researchers went to this teacher, now living in a home for retired teachers. How had she had this brilliant 10 on that group of children? Could she give them any reason why these boys should have remembered her?
“No,” she said,“No,I really couldn’t.”And then, thinking back 11 the years, she said musingly(沉思地),12 to herself than to her questioners,“Iloved those boys…”

In early grade school they 4 their notes. But as children grow older they becomes self-conscious(有自我意識(shí)的), and 5 he reached high school, my older son, Marc, informed me he no longer 6 my daily notes. Telling him that he no longer needed to 7 them but I still needed to write them, I 8 until the day he graduated.
Six years after high school graduation, Marc called and asked if he could move 9 for a couple of months. He had spent those years well, graduating from college, 10 two internship (實(shí)習(xí)) in Washington, D.C., and 11 , becoming a technical assistant in Sacramento, 12 short vacation visits, however, he had lived away from home. With his younger sister leaving for college, I was 13 happy to have Marc back. Since I was 14 making lunch for his younger brother, I 15 one for Marc, too. Imagine my 16 when I got a call from my 24-year-old son, 17 his lunch.
“Did I do something 18? Don’t you love me 19 ,Mom?” were just a few of the questions he threw at me as I 20 asked him what was wrong. “My note, Mom,” he answered. “Where’s my note?”

Monty Roberts owns a horse ranch(牧馬場(chǎng)) in San Ysidro. He told us his story. As a senior, he was asked to write a 1about what he wanted to be and do when he grew up.

That night he wrote a seven-page paper2his goal of someday owning a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great3and he even drew a diagram of a 200-acre ranch, showing the4 of all the buildings.
He put his heart into the5and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that 6, ‘See me after class.’
The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, ‘Why did I7 an F?’
The teacher said, ‘This is an 8dream for a young boy like you. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There’s no 9you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, ‘If you will 10this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’”
The boy went home and11it. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, ‘Look, son, you have to 12your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very13decision for you.’
Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the14paper, making no changes at all. He stated, ‘You can keep the F and I’ll keep my15.’
Monty now owned a 200-acre ranch. He had 16his plan for a 4,000-square-foot house.
Two summers ago that same school teacher brought 30 kids to camp out on his ranch for a week. When leaving, he said17 , ‘Look, Monty. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream18. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. 19, you had enough perseverance not to give up on yours.’”
Don’t let anyone steal your dreams. 20your heart, no matter what.

For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A,B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
When I was a college student, I did a lot of travelling abroad. That was because a professor1me to do so. She said,“Now is the time for you to travel around the world, 2 your knowledge through actual experiences and have fun!” I agreed with her.
Since I started to work for a3company, however, I have done most of my travellling through the Internet. By using the Internet, I have seen the sights of many cities on my computer screen. And I have really made business4, too. With the help of the Internet, I have also got 5about food in different countries.
Therefore, I was beginning to feel that actual trips were6necessary when I happened to read a famous chef’s comment on the Internet. He said,“It is very difficult to have real Italian food in a foreign country, because we enjoy food and the atmosphere around us at the same time. So why don’t you fly over to Italy and enjoy real Italian7?” Those words reminded me of my8advice. As information technology9,you might be able to do without making some real trips. But this also means that you will miss the various10you can get from travelling.
Today there are people who11direct communication with others and spend much of their time on the Internet. It is not surprising to see a group of people12not with each other but into their micro phones. It seems as if such people are13by an invisible wall. They seem to be losing out on a good chance to14and talk with other people. I do not think that they are taking good advantage of information technology. We should use information technology as a tool to make our daily communication more fruitful. However, we should never let it15our time for face-to-face communication. Let’s make use of information technology more  wisely, and have great fun in experiencing the actual world.
