When I was 23 years old I was in a dangerous relationship with my fiance (未婚夫) at the time. I was being physically and verbally abused(辱罵) on a daily basis. I was financially tied to him after he spent all my savings to pay his debts but I wanted to be free!

For the longest time I was too embarrassed to tell my mother about the situation. She had warned me about him. But,eventually, I worked up the courage to tell her and she sent me the money I needed to leave.

Before the money arrived he found out what I planned to do. I was so scared of what he might do,so I decided to leave all my things and just get out of there.

Then,on my way to the safety, my car died!I had automobile insurance so I called the AAA and had them pull the car to a garage. It turned out that the repair was going to cost $80. 00 and the money my mom sent hadn't arrived by that time.

The owner of the garage must have known something was up because he asked what was wrong. I told him a brief description of my story and told him I could pay him in two days.

He never told me his name but I will never forget him or what he did for me that day!He fixed the car immediately and told me he would not accept any payment―ever! He said he had a daughter almost my age and would like to think that if she ever needed help in the future then some stranger might do the same for her.

Since then I have tried to help people in my own way. Now I have a beautiful twelve-year-old daughter and I hope throughout her life she can help others and be helped when she needs it, like I was!

Once upon a time,a doting mother asked Albert Einstein what she should read to her son to help him grow up as brilliant and intelligent as the famous scientist. "Fairy-tales," he said, wisely nodding his head.

Why? Why would Albert Einstein the Nobel Prizes winning physicist recommend reading fairy-tales? Was he joking? All the evidence suggests he was deadly serious. He also said, "When I examine myself and my methods of thought,I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than any talent for abstract, positive thinking.”

Childhood is one of the factors that blur(使變模糊) the distinctions between the self and oth?er objects. Thus fantasy stories appeal to children and appear to make sense to them.

There are several commonly accepted genres(流派) of fantasy, "Animal Fantasy" which centers around the lives of lovable talking animals and "Modem Fantasy" which focuses on ad?ventures in other worlds and magical events. I am inclined to add a third genre "Human and An?imal Fantasy" , which mixes human and animal characters. Another genre of fantasy may be "High Fantasy" which features heroes who combat evil and save the world from destruction.

Fantasy feeds a child's imagination and encourages creativity. The enjoyment that the genre engenders(產(chǎn)生) promotes reading and enhances literacy. Moreover, the fantasy genre may be used for teaching purposes. For example:A story about cruelty to animals would limit appeal to a child:however a fantasy celebration of closeness between the children and their pets may give an element of excitement as the children are able to save animals from someone with cruel inten?tions.

Children love the Harry Potter series, and if they only see the movies they miss a great op?portunity to develop their reading skills by spending time with the lovable young wizards and witches(巫婆) of the Hogwarts community.

B.they can help improve children's reading ability

(   ) 3. Which of the following best gives the main idea of the sixth paragraph?

A.Fantasy can be educational to children.

B.Fantasy can bring great joy to children.

C.Children should not read stories about animals.

D.Fantasy can teach children to be kind to animals.

Superstition(迷信) has existed for such a long time. Hundreds of years ago it was more a-live because of humans' limited knowledge. Who was the first to walk under a ladder and suffer the bad result? Who hung a horseshoe the wrong way up or broke a mirror and then their luck ran out?

Superstition, somehow, has been with us as a tradition. Human beings have tried hard to find explanations for it.

Friday the 13th is an unlucky day in much of Western Europe, North America, and Aus?tralia. Many people avoid travel and avoid signing contracts on Friday the 13th. Floors in tall buildings often skip from 12 to 14. Such belief has deep roots in Christian religion.

Some people claim that the number is bad luck because thirteen people sat down for the Last Supper before Jesus was put to death, and with this in mind few hosts will serve dinner with thirteen at the table.

In the Norse mythology(挪威神話) twelve Gods gathered for a feast when a thirteenth, Loke, entered. Loke then, after the meal, killed Balder, who was the most beloved of the gods. Have you ever placed your shoes on the table or on top of your bed? Of course you haven't? they might be dirty. But there is also another reason for not doing it―it means bad luck.

There has been a strange tradition in the West of throwing an old shoe after a person when he or she leaves his or her home. Believe it or not, this is a way of wishing them luck.

In the past this was also a common thing to do when a new couple left their homes to get married. Then, when they were just married, one could wish them good luck by tying an old boot to the back of their car.

Is the number 13 really unlucky, or is it just a myth? There are a handful of athletes who dare to wear the infamous(名聲壞的) number. NBA super star Steve Nash wears the number 13 both in Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns.

It is said that superstition has been a part of sports since the beginning. Players have their ways of avoiding bad luck.

(   ) 5. The passage mainly talks about        .

A.the relationship between superstition and bad luck

   B.how superstition influences people's life

   C.how superstition began and developed

   D.superstition and tradition

(   ) 6. Which of the following gives the correct explanation for the unlucky number 13?

A.It has something to do with religious belief.

B.Thirteen gods gathered for a feast when Balder was killed.

C.Jesus was put to death when another, the thirteenth god, entered.

D.It has something to do with the people's tradition of serving dinner.

(   ) 7. When a couple got married, one would tie an old boot to the back of their car

   A.to avoid bad luck

   B.because they left their homes

C.to wish the whole family good luck

   D.to wish them good luck

(   ) 8. From the passage, we can infer that        .

A.superstition has lost its influence in modern society

B.sports is the field which is least influenced by superstition

C.superstition still influences people's life in one way or another

D.the number 13 has brought good luck to some famous athletes

Kids have less safety sense. Though it is difficult to stop the children from suffering inju?ries,we can always take measures and learn the first aid available in case of an emergency. Lis?ted below are a few tips on first aid and safety which should be paid attention to.

Tragedy involving fire is the worst and safety methods taken to prevent these things from happening are the best. Educating children on measures to prevent fire is the first step towards fire prevention. The next step is to operate tire items with care. Children should not be allowed to cook or operate a gas stove alone. Fire drills can help children learn the methods of escape in case of a fire. In case of burns of low intensity(強(qiáng)度) ,run cold water until the pain disappears; however, with serious burns, you must seek medical help immediately. Also make sure that there are enough smoke alarms installed in the house.

Another major fear involving kids is drowning. The children should never be left unattend?ed while swimming, even if your child is a great swimmer, if a girl has long hair she must make sure that she ties it firmly in the swimming cap before swimming to prevent it getting tangled (纏繞) in the pool. Take measures by making children wear lifesaving jackets and stop them from going to any place like the docks where water is dangerous to swimmers.

Carbon dioxide is poisonous especially to children. Even a small dose of it can be fatal for them or at least has the power to make a child seriously ill. Place all medicines and other poison?ous substance away from the reach of children.

Cuts are common among children, but parents can avoid it by making their children wear shoes at home and removing any furniture with sharp edges. Avoiding injuries is as important as learning first aid.
