How to Survive Embarrassing Moments
Have you ever done something embarrassing? At that moment, you probably wished you could disappear into thin air. Unfortunately, embarrassing things happen to everyone at one time or another. The good news? You can keep the damage to the minimum. Here's some help.
Laugh it off
You're staring at your crush (意中人) so hard that you walk into a wall. You trip over your own feet and drop all your books. The best thing you can do? As long as you're not seriously hurt, laugh it off.Say like "Hey, I can teach you to do that if you want to!" or "It took me years to learn that!" By laughing at yourself, you show people you're confident and still in control of the situation. That's bound to make a stronger impression than the fact that you dropped a stack of books.
Move on
Some situations are too personal to laugh off.Your underwear falls out of your backpack. Your bathing suit falls off in the pool. You pass gas while giving a presentation.Making a joke would just call more attention to what happened — and that's the last thing you want. What now? You can just pretend nothing happened and go back to what you were doing, or you can acknowledge it with a "Oh, that was awkward" and then move on.
If there's a joker who thinks it's a good idea to point out how badly you just embarrassed yourself, fix him with a glare and then go back to whatever you were doing.Tell yourself he's a little bug on the ground, not even worth thinking about.Remind yourself that it's over, done.Move on.
Apologize and move on
Some embarrassing situations pack a double punch. Not only do you embarrass yourself, but you make someone else feel bad.You say to a friend that another friend is such a copycat, and then realize the copycat is standing right behind you.You imitate your teacher's unusual accent just as the teacher walks in.Now you're embarrassed and they're mad or hurt.
Making a joke now would make the situation even worse, so don't go there.Although you might feel like running away or even crying, neither of those responses will make you look better.Instead, apologize, "I'm so sorry. That was really mean of me."
If you've been disrespectful to a teacher or a parent, accept whatever consequences without complaint. If you've hurt a friend, do your best to make it up to them.Once you've done all you can to make things right again, move on.If someone else brings it up, just say, "I feel bad enough about that —can we just let it go, please?"
The next time you're stuck in an embarrassing moment, remind yourself that you're a strong person and you can get through this.Stay calm and act confident and the moment will pass.

Apple is known for offering the best customer service in the consumer technology market, such as Lenovo, Google and Nokia, in customer satisfaction surveys every year .
A particular story tells of how an Apple store manager broke a rule to earn a new, 10-year-old customer for life.
Matt tells us this touching story:
My daughter has been saving her birthday money and allowance for almost 9 months so that she could afford an iPod touch with a camera in it.
As of this morning, she had saved the amount needed and headed to an Apple store in Utah with my wife. They arrived at 10:30 am, not realizing that the store would be closed from 11 am to 2 am that day. As they approach the store, two friendly Apple employees greeted them and said they were sorry, but they were closed.
My wife pointed to my daughter who had a mason jar full of cash in her arms and explained why they were there and also pointed out that it was not quite 11 am yet. They again said they were sorry, but could not let them in. My wife and daughter were sad and regretful, but understood and made their way to another store in the mall.
About three stores down, an Apple employee raced after them and explained that the manager was going to make an exception and let them in. Every one of the employees stopped what they were doing as my daughter approached the register.
As she took all of the cash out of the mason jar, one employee stepped forward and said, “I don’t mean to bother you, but I have to tell you that this made my day wonderful.”
After the transaction(交易), my daughter and wife were on their way out, the store manager raised his voice and said to all of the employees, “Everyone, please give a round of applause for saving her money and buying an iPod today.”

Americans use many expressions with the word “dog”. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well. 1. However, dogs without owners to care for them lead a different kind of life. The expression, to lead a dog's life, describes a person who has an unhappy existence.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. 2. They say that to be successful, a person has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
3. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks. They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
4. People who are unkind or uncaring can be described as meaner than a junkyard dog. Junkyard dogs live in places where people throw away things they do not want. Mean dogs are often used to guard this property. They bark or attack people who try to enter the property. However, sometimes a person who appears to be mean and threatening is really not so bad. We say his bark is worse than his bite.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rainstorm may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. 5. .
A. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
B. Still, people say every dog has its day.
C. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs.
D. Dogs are their best friends and they are loyal to people.
E. There are many other expressions waiting for you to explore.
F. Some people are compared to dogs in bad ways.
G. They take their dogs for walks, let them play outside and give them good food and medical care.

The popularity of farmers’ markets combined with concerns over food security is making the number of school leavers taking agriculture courses increase rapidly, according to a study.
Large numbers of 16- to 18-year-olds are going to study subjects such as agriculture, food and gamekeeping despite having no background in farming. Jeanette Dawson, principal of Bishop Burton College, said women were also taking up courses at an increasing rate.
She said it was related to a series of food scandals (丑聞)such as the discovery of horsemeat in frozen meals stocked by major supermarkets.
But the movement was also promoted by an increased awareness of the importance of local food and produce, she said. The number of students taking courses in “l(fā)and-based subjects” has increased by a quarter in the last 12 months alone – from 5,138 to 6,482.
Mrs. Dawson said there were a lot of young people who weren’t from farming backgrounds. But there had been a growth in the number of them accessing agriculture programes with a view to a career in the industry. She said agriculture was an “applied science, with the great outdoors as its laboratory”. And it was increasingly seen as an attractive job for school leavers.
“I never underestimate (低估) the ability of teenagers to pick up on it. The more it is in the media, the more it interests young people. Whenever I go in my local pub, it has on the blackboard where the sausages (香腸) are from. Everyone is interested in buying local food and knowing where their food is from.
The comments were made as Bishop Burton prepares to expand, with a £I3 million project to build a new campus in Lincolnshire. The site – due to open in September 20l5 – will be the college’s second in the county, in addition to one at nearby Riseholme.
1.What is making large numbers of students take agriculture courses?
A. Agriculture is very important to a country.
B. People are increasingly concerned about food security.
C. Many colleges are offering agriculture courses.
D. Agriculture is an applied science.
2.The example of horsemeat in the third paragraph illustrates(證明) the necessity of_________ .
A. protecting animals
B. strengthening food safety
C. protecting the environment
D. forming healthy eating habits
3.What does the writer mainly discuss in the passage?
A. Why the government should strengthen agriculture.
B. How to strengthen food safety.
C. Why agriculture courses are becoming popular among students.
D. How to do well in agriculture courses.
