When I was young, my father had one of the first telephones in our neighborhood. I remember the shiny box on the wall. But I was too little to reach it, I could only listen to my mother talk on it.

I discovered that inside the wonderful box lived an amazing person whose name was Information Please. There was nothing she did not know.

One day my mother went out. I accidentally hurt my finger when I was playing with a hammer. I walked around the house sucking my hurting finger, finally seeing the telephone. Quickly I dragged a chair over and climbed up.

“Information Please,” I spoke into the receiver. A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into my ear, “Information.”

“I hurt my finger…” I cried into the phone.

“Isn’t your mother home?” came the question.

“Nobody’s home but me.” I sobbed.

“Are you bleeding?” the voice asked.

“No,” I replied. “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.”

“Can you open your icebox?” she asked. I said I could.

“Then take a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger.” Said the voice.

After that, I called “Information Please” for everything. I asked her for help with my geography and she told me where Philadelphia was. She helped me with my math. She told me her name was Sally.

Then there was the time my pet canary (金絲雀) died. I called “Information Please” and told Sally the sad story. “Why is it that birds sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a pile of feathers?” She listened, then said quietly, “Paul, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in.” Somehow I felt better.

One day when I called “Information Please” again, a different voice answered “Information.”

I asked for Sally. “Are you a friend?” she said.

“Yes.” I answered

“I’m sorry to have to tell you this,” she said. “She died five days ago.” Before I could hang up she said, “Wait a minute. Did you say your name was Paul?”

“Yes!”

“Well, Sally left a message for you. The note said, “Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll know what I mean.” I thanked her and hung up. I knew what Sally meant.

Tu Youyou has become the first Chinese woman to win a Nobel Prize, for her work in helping to create an anti-malaria(瘧疾) medicine. The 84-year-old’s route to the honour has been anything but traditional. In China, she is being called the "three nos" winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas.

In 1967, malaria, a then deadly disease, spread by mosquitoes was decimating Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit “Mission 523 “was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later, Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of “Mission 523”.

“Mission523” read ancient books carefully for a long time to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, more than 240,000 compounds(化合物) around the world had already been tested, without any success. Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood(青蒿), which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD. The team took out one active compound in wormwood, and then tested it. But nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she changed the drug recipe one final time, heating the compound without allowing it to reach boiling point.

After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu Youyou volunteered to be the first human recipient of the new drug. “

In any case, Tu Youyou is consistently praised for her drive and passion. One former colleague. Lianda Li, says Ms Tu is “unsociable and quite straightforward”, adding that “if she disagrees with something, she will say it.”

Another colleague, Fuming Liao, who has worked with Tu Youyou for more than 40 years, describes her as a “tough and stubborn woman”. Stubborn enough to spend decades piecing together ancient texts, she applies them to modern scientific practices. The result has saved millions of lives.

1.According to Para. I, we can learn that_______.

A. Tu is the first woman to win a Nobel Prize

B. Tu has a medical degree

C. Tu’s road to success is not traditional

D. Tu discovered a cure for malaria

2. The underlined word “decimating” can be replaced by_______.

A. encouraging B. killing

C. annoying D. benefiting

3. Which of the following statements is true?

A. Tu first invented the idea of using sweet wormwood as a cure.

B. Tu was inspired by medical textbooks published in northern vietnem.

C. The compound needs to be heated to the boiling point to be effective.

D. Over 240,000 compounds were proved ineffective before Tu’s seareh.

4.Tu Youyou can be best described as a _______ person.

A. devoted and stubborn

B. straightforward and mean

C. considerate and tough

D. sociable and generous

The United States Capitol Dome(圓頂) in Washington, DC, is recognized around the world as a symbol of the U.S. Government. Since last November, the dome has been surrounded by metal poles and heavy cloth as part of a repair project.

The last major repair work on the U.S. Capitol took place in 1960. Since then, the dome has become weathered and worn. The Architect of the Capitol group reports that the dome has more than 1,000 narrow breaks on its surface and other damage.

The dome was completed around 1863. U. S. Senate Historian Don Ritchie says the dome’s cast(石膏) iron frame is at special risk of weathering. “The capitol dome, being cast iron, has been hit by lightning countless times. And so the current construction is to repair the leaks, to fill the cracks, to take off extra layers of paint.”

Some recent visitors to the Capitol were unhappy about its current appearance. They had hoped to get a picture of the usually shining dome. Joyce said, “It was impressive, and very fantastic, and all white, but when I come here today, it is under construction so my family cannot see it clearly, it is kind of a disappointment.”

Others were more understanding of the repairs. Rick Jones, another visitor, said, “It’s a little inconvenient for us not to see the dome but you have to think about the future and the people will be coming to this place for centuries...and you know ,there just needs to be preventive maintenance(維護(hù)). I am not upset with that at all.”

The project is expected to take more than two years to complete. The dome should be ready for a new president in January 2017.

A. To replace the cast iron frame.

C. To remove the old paint.

D. To fill up the narrow breaks.

3.What do we learn about the recent visitors to the Capitol ?

A. They could get a clear look at the dome.

B. They were all disappointed at the sight of the Capitol’s building.

C. They were impressed by the white dome’s fantastic beauty.

D. They held different views on the Capitol’s current appearance.

Think about what you usually have for a meal: Is it a hamburger? What about vegetables? Would it surprise you to learn that what you eat can affect the whole planet?

It can--in a big way. Scientists attending the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago presented new studies showing how food and its production affect the globe and its warming climate. It is generally believed that global warming is caused by the large amounts of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere. One of these greenhouse gases is carbon dioxide.

What does this have to do with food? A big part of the carbon dioxide comes from the process of making and eating food, the scientists reported in Chicago. The production of meat contributes to a lot of that carbon dioxide.

The process of making a hamburger, for example, requires a lot of energy. A cow has to be fed and raised on farmland, and cow manure(肥料)is a major source of methane(甲烷)--an especially powerful greenhouse gas. By the time a hamburger is finally served on a dinner plate, it has done great harm to the environment.

The message from the research is clear: We can greatly reduce the production of greenhouse gases by eating less meat.

All kinds of meat, the scientists reported, are harder on the planet than vegetables. To grow and eat a pound of potatoes, for example, sends less than one-quarter pound of carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases into the air. So shifting our diet to less meat and more vegetables ,as it turns out, may do the world some good.

1.Generally speaking , people believe that global warming is caused by ________.

A. cutting down too many trees.

B. releasing too many greenhouse gases.

C. growing too many vegetables.

D. raising too many cows.

2.Which of the following is NOT true?

A. To make and eat meat requires a great deal of energy.

B. To feed and raise cows on farmland contributes to greenhouse gases.

C. To make and eat hamburgers sends greenhouse gases into the air.

D. To grow and eat vegetables does no harm to the environment.

3.According to the passage , the writer seemingly intends to ________.

A. appeal to us to protect the environment by eating less meat food.

B. persuade us to develop a good eating habit to keep healthy

C. advise us to make less hamburgers in order to save energy.

D. encourage us to grow more vegetables to reduce greenhouse gases.
