Dear cousin,

Long time no see! It has been almost a year ever since you move to London. I miss you a lot of. I’m writing the letter to ask you for help. As you know, I am eager to be a photographer like you, so I asked my parents to buy me the camera last week. But he told me I wouldn’t concentrate in my schoolwork if I got one. Oh, my God! What can I make them trust me? I’m not a kid any longer, but I can control myself. What’s worse, I have promised that I will take photos for the school’s newspaper next month. When asking by my classmates, I will be absolutely embarrassed. Therefore, would you like to lend me some money? If you’d like, I will return it as soon as possibly.

Yours Sincerely,

Tom

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

When I was little, I’d see tons of bats flying around streetlights at night in my neighborhood in upstate New York. But I’ll never forget the first time when I saw a bat up close. By the time I turned 7, though, I noticed something strange: All the bats in my neighborhood had disappeared, and I wondered why.

Then, three years ago, when I was 11 and visiting the state fair, I learned what had happened to my town’s bats. A disease called “white nose syndrome” had killed 93 percent of New York State’s bats. I was horrified. Then I wrote a letter to the host of an environmental program on the local radio station, asking if they could do a show on bats. They did!

But I still wanted to find a way to educate people face to face. I reached out to a teacher I had in elementary school and asked if I could make a presentation to her class. I described how bats help farmers by eating crop-damaging insects. It went over so well that other teachers started requesting me. Over the past three years, I’ve talked in front of everyone from 5-year-olds to senior citizens! Many people think that bats are blind, and that they always carry diseases, but none of that is true. The more I present, the more I notice that I am changing minds.

And while getting people to respect bats is pretty hard, getting them to respect me has been difficult too. When I first applied to host a booth (攤位) at a local street fair, the managers thought I was too young. But I refused to take “no” for an answer. I continued to make my case, and they finally said yes! The best part is, I impressed them so much— 100 visitors on my first day — that they now invite me back every year.

1.All the bats in the neighborhood disappeared because they .

A. were killed by a disease

B. moved to another habitat

C. were hunted by other animals

D. hid in a place where people couldn’t find them

2.The author wrote a letter to the host in order to ask them to .

A. donate some money to save bats

B. make a radio program about bats

C. announce new findings about bats

D. finish some questionnaires about the fair

3.How did the author save bats?

A. By building a new home for them.

B. By volunteering to work in the wild.

C. By improving their living environment.

D. By educating people that they are beneficial.

4.What does the underlined phrase “make my case.” in the last paragraph mean?

A. make an impressive persuasion.

B. look into the matter.

C. quarrel with them

D. stick to the facts.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Tokyo University laboratory has developed a robot that never loses at the game of Rock Paper Scissors. That is because its visual processing abilities and fingers work together faster than any human brain. A video of the undefeated robot has been watched by more than 3 million viewers on YouTube since going online at the end of June.

Tokyo University engineering professor Masatoshi Ishikawa has a good-natured response to frustrated human losers who accuse him of essentially creating a robot that cheats. “It is not cheating. Every one millisecond the image processor decides and recognizes the shape the human hand is going to make. And then the robot can make a winnable shape one millisecond later than a human being. Only one millisecond, but a human cannot see this difference because the human eye is very slow,” explained Ishikawa.

At the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory there has been amazing progress which shows the near perfect accuracy of robotics. Such as a robot that can catch a falling egg without breaking it, another one that can tie a knot, and a robot that may not be quite ready for the NBA, but is able to dribble (連擊) a ball.

In sports such as baseball and cricket, the misses outnumber (比……多) successes for even the most skilled athletes. That is not so in this award-winning school laboratory. For instance, an intelligent robot is the result of five years of research and a lot of trial and error. And the cost of just one finger on the robot is equal to that of a mini car.

The technology obviously has uses beyond fun and games. Corporations are eager to take advantage of the lab’s technology for industrial and other practical uses. And there is talk of applying it to assist disabled people and improve human capabilities.

1.What brings the robot so much attention on the YouTube?

A. It never loses in the game against humans.

B. Its eyes and fingers can work at the same time.

C. It can do anything whatever people tell it to do.

D. It plays online games much better than any human.

2.Ishikawa’s explanation suggests that the robot .

A. proves to be dishonest

B. is lucky to win the game

C. works slower sometimes

D. responds faster than humans

3.What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A. The school laboratory is the world first class.

B. The research of robot can’t afford failures.

C. The most skilled athletes seldom fail in sports.

D. Intelligent robots are mostly used in ball games.

4.Which section of a website is the text probably taken from?

A. Sports and games.

B. Human and society.

C. Science and technology.

D. Relaxation and entertainment.

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項。

Wildlife conservationists in Kenya are trying to save a rare kind of rhinoceros (犀牛). So many northern white rhinos have been hunted and killed that they are almost dying out. There were only five northern white rhinos left. So the workers hoped they could save the rhinos by helping them produce young.

Three northern white rhinos lived at The Ol Pejeta Conservancy (保護區(qū)) in Kenya. Workers with military weapons guarded the rhinos as they walked, played and ate over a large area of natural grass and trees. The three rhinos were brought to the conservancy in 2009 from a zoo in the Czech Republic. Workers hoped they would have a better chance of survival in a more natural habitat.

But breeding has not been as successful as they had hoped. And the number of northern white rhinos continues to decrease. One of the rhinos at the conservancy died in October. Another died at a zoo in the US city of San Diego, California earlier this month. The San Diego zoo still has one northern white rhino left. The zoo in the Czech Republic also has one.

The last wild northern white rhinos were hunted and killed during conflicts in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the past ten years. Rhinos are killed because many people in Asia want the animals’ horns (角). They believe the horns will help with medical problems. But researchers say there is no medicine in the horn, just a kind of hair.

The last male northern white rhino is 41 years old. He has been unsuccessful in producing young with a female rhino. So conservationists will use artificial methods to make a young female become pregnant. If that is not successful, they will try to fertilize a northern rhino egg and put it into a southern white rhino, who will act as a surrogate(代孕) mother. The last solution would be cross-breeding between the northern and southern white rhino species. If cross-breeding is successful, there is hope that some part of the northern white rhino species may still live on.

1.Why were the three northern white rhinos brought to the conservancy in Kenya?

A. To protect them from being killed by the armed guards.

B. To ensure that they live better in a natural environment.

C. To keep the conservation a good balance of nature.

D. To attract more visitors to come to this area.

2.In Paragraph 3, it’s inferred that the number of the rhinos falls down to .

A. 1 B. 3

C. 5 D. 7

3.People hunted and killed rhinos because .

A. they wanted to get rhinos’ horns for medical use

B. rhinos ate natural grass and trees on their farmland

C. get rid of the threat of rhinos from their life

D. they wanted to do researches on producing young for rhinos

4.From the last paragraph, we can learn that .

A. other measures will be taken to breed rhinos

B. the conservationists lead a busy life in Congo

C. breeding a baby white rhino is quite an easy job

D. cross-breeding is an effective way to produce young

Tips to Increase Your Productivity

Want to get more done in your day? Of course you do. 1. The good news is that everyone can increase the amount of tasks they accomplish in a day. Here are some tips to help you have a more productive day.

Make a plan for your day. Make sure you know how you want your day to go in advance, even before you start. 2. To work best, create the next day’s plan the night before so that every morning you spend time performing, not planning.

Break large tasks down into bits accomplished easily. Do you have a large project that’s just so big that you keep putting it off? Or maybe you’re just unsure of where to begin, so you put it off. 3. Therefore, you will feel a sense of accomplishment as you check the items of your list.

Always set your priorities (優(yōu)先事項). 4. Figure out what must be done, do that first and rank the rest of your work according to importance. If you don’t get to the items at the end of your list, it won’t be a big problem, and you can do them another time.

5. If you are the most productive in the morning, that’s when you should hit it hard and do as much as you can. If you work better in the afternoon, take care of some things like emails in the morning and then accomplish the important projects in the afternoon. Keep on top of your work habits, and you’ll be more productive.

A. Reward yourself if you are productive.

B. Be aware of when you are the most productive.

C. This can provide you a roadmap for the day.

D. It’s tough to meet depressed people who are productive.

E. It’s important to accomplish the most important tasks first.

F. A good way is to break the project down into more manageable ones.
