Cotton farmers in some Indian villages are busily buying Coca Cola and Pepsi, believing that the sugar in the fizzy (有泡沫的) drinks kills pests.

Farmers say scientists advised them to mix pesticides with a sugary juice to control pests, and they found the mixture cheaper and more effective than pure chemicals — although soft drink makers and scientists dismissed the remarks. Hamunayya, who has become a famous person in his village in the southeastern state of Andhra Pradesh, said his crop survived an attack of pests which had resisted other pesticides. “We found that all the colas had uniform effect on pests. The pests became dead and fell to the ground，” he said. He said the drinks had all the elements they needed: they were cheaper, sticky, fizzy, and attracted ants, which ate the young of the pests. But Thinupathi Reddy, assistant director of the Regional Agri Research Station, Guntur, says tests had proved such results wrong. “We conducted some field trials on cotton crop at our research station. There was no obvious productivity or destruction of pests，” he says.

Statements from Pepsi and Coca Cola said there was “no scientific basis” for this_practice. But their dealers are enjoying increasing sales. Mantan Wall, who sells soft drinks in 17 villages in the region, said sales rose up, thanks to the farmers. “For the 10 days between August and September I had successful business. Instead of just 30 cases (each containing a dozen one litre bottles) of cola, I started selling almost 200 cases，” he said. “We expected the sales to drop after the news over pesticide residues (殘留) in the cola drinks. Now I have to keep extra supply for the cotton farmers，” he said.

“Have a nice day！” may be a pleasant gesture or a meaningless expression. When my friend Maxie says “Have a nice day” with a smile, I know she sincerely cares about what happens to me. I feel loved and secure since another person cares about me and wishes me well.

“Have_a_nice_day. Next！” This version of the expression is spoken by a salesgirl at the supermarket who is rushing me and my groceries out the door. (2016·皖北協(xié)作區(qū)高三聯(lián)考)A former RAF (Royal Air Force) Spitfire pilot Peter Proctor, who fought in the World War Two, parachuted (跳傘) for the first time — at the grand old age of 92. Mr Proctor jumped out of a plane for the first time at Sibson Airfield, Peterborough, more than 70 years after he joined the RAF.

Mr Proctor, who has two artificial hips (臀部) and a false knee, jumped more than 13,000 feet to successfully complete his first ever freefall jump. He said, “I've spent a lot of my life up in the air but this was a completely different experience. It was a nightmare trying to open up the hatches (艙口) and jump out of the plane back then, but I am so glad I have managed to complete the jump and I would love to do it again in the near future.”

Mr Proctor joined the RAF in 1942 and he was stationed in Durban, South Africa, to do his training before being sent to Zimbabwe where he earned his wings. He went on to become a fighter pilot in Egypt, India and went on a jungle self?preservation course before being sent to Burma in 1945. He ended his career in the armed forces in 1946 to return to his job as a store keeper in a shoe factory and went on to become a lorry driver for 33 years.

His wife, Olive, passed away eight years ago, but Mr Proctor has been determined to continue traveling around the world. He said, “Olive died eight years ago and it was absolutely upsetting. But I've had great support from my family and friends who always encourage me to enjoy life.”
