Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.

Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since the 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story? Firstly, it is important to report new stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories to those on TV. Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don't want to read stories about everyday life as a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be "bad" news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely, instead they print stories about plane accidents.

Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

1.According to the passage, how do people learn about news stories in the world now?

A. They carry news stories and tell others from place to place on foot or by horse. B. They tell each other what they have seen with their eyes. C. They watch TV or read newspapers. D. They listen to the radio every day.

2.The difference between newspaper stories and TV news reports is that _____ .

A. people can learn more about the same news story from a newspaper B. people can read the news story more quickly in a newspaper C. people can read news stories in other countries D. people can read news stories about their own country

3.To make a good newspaper story, how many factors does the passage talk about?

A. Two. B. Three. C. Five. D. Six.

4.According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly watch on TV?

A. You often play football with your friends after school. B. Your teacher has got a cold. C. A tiger in the city zoo has run out and hasn't been caught. D. The bike in the front of your house is lost.

Housework is a frequent source of disputes(爭論) between lazy husbands and their hard-working wives, but women have been warned not to expect men to pull their weight any time soon.

A study from Oxford University has found that men are unlikely to be doing an equal share of housework before 2050. Mothers, the researchers warned, will continue to shoulder the burden of childcare and housework for the next four decades, largely because housework such as cleaning and cooking is still regarded as “women’s work”.

The gap between the amount of time men and women spend on housework has narrowed slowly over the past 40 years. But it will take another four decades before true housework equality(平等) is achieved, the study concluded. The research found that in the Nordic countries, the burden of housework is shared more equally between men and women. In the UK, women spend an average of four hours and forty minutes each day on housework, compared with two hours and twenty-eight minutes for men. This is an improvement from the 1960s, when British women typically spent six hours a day on housework, while men spent just 90 minutes every day.

But progress towards housework equality appears to be slowing in some countries. Dr. Oriel Sullivan, a research reader from Oxford’s Department of Sociology, said, “We’ve looked at what is affecting the equality in the home, and we have found that certain tasks seem to be given according to whether they are viewed as ‘men’s work’ or ‘women’s work’.”

Dr. Sullivan said cultural attitudes taught at school may be responsible for the views of housework. “At school it is much easier for a girl to be a tomboy, but it is much more difficult for a boy to enjoy baking and dancing,” she said.

1.The underlined part “pull their weight” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to “ ”.

A. lose weight B. be lazy

C. earn money D. do equal housework

2.Women will continue to do more housework before 2050 mainly because .

A. men are too busy to help

B. they would like to do so

C. they can do better in housework

D. housework will still be considered as women’s work

3.From Paragraph 4 we know that in the UK .

A. men now spend just 90 minutes a day on housework on average

B. women now are too busy with their work to do housework

C. women now spend less time on housework than before

D. housework is shared equally between men and women

4.In Dr. Sullivan’s opinion, what is to blame for the housework inequality?

A. Cultural attitudes towards housework

B. Policies made by the government

C. The time spent on work

D. The type of housework

Tipping isn’t a big part of British culture, unlike in North America, where waiters and waitresses are paid below minimum wage. Tips are usually appreciated, but offering a tip of some services can cause confusion.

In casual restaurants, where you pay for your order at a counter but food is brought to your table, tipping is uncommon. You are welcome to leave a pound or two if you wish. In restaurants where you place your order with a waiter or a waitress and receive your food and bill at your table, it’s customary to tip around 10 percent. In some restaurants, a service charge may be added to the bill automatically, typically 10 or 12.5 percent. In this case, you don’t need to add a further tip. When you pay by credit card, the machine may ask if you want to add a tip. Check your bill to see if a service charge has already been added before paying—if so you don’t need to add a tip on the machine. You can request the service charge be removed from your bill if you are unhappy with the service. In some cases a restaurant may print “service not included” on the bill or menu. This is a request for a tip. You’re not forced to offer anything, but 10 percent would be normal in this situation. Tipping in cafes and fast food restaurant is not expected.

If you use a taxi, round the fare up to the nearest pound shown on the meter. On a journey from or to the airport in a booked minicab you might wish to trip 2 or 3 pounds if the driver helps with your bags.

Be sure to check a country’s tipping culture before you start your tip. For more information, visit TripAdvisor.com.
