20.Monitoring the mood of a pet dog could be used as an early warning sign that an elderly owner is struggling to cope,a new report has claimed.
Researchers placed movement sensors on dogs to track their behaviour and identified 17 distinct activities, including chewing, barking, sitting and digging. This allowed them to map the normal behaviour of a healthy, happy dog, which means any changes can be monitored and could indicate an issue with their owner.
Nils Hammerla, part of the team from Newcastle University, said,"Humans and dogs have lived together in close relationships for thousands of years, which has led to strong emotional and social mutual bonds."
"A dog's physical and emotional dependence on their owner means that their wellbeing is likely to reflect that of their owner.Any changes such as the dog being walked less often, perhaps not being fed regularly,or simply demonstrating"unhappy"behaviour could be an early indicator for families that an older relative needs help. This is the first system of its kind which allows us to remotely monitor a dog's behaviour in its natural setting."
The team of academics, who presented their findings at the 2013 UbiComp conference in Zurich, created a hitech, waterproof dog collar for the study.
Dr Cas Ladha, who led the study, said:"A lot of our research is focused on developing intelligent systems that can help older people to live independently for longer.
But developing a system thatreassures family and carers that an older relative is well without intruding on (侵犯) the individual's privacy is difficult. This is just the first step but the idea behind this research is that it would allow us to support people without the need for cameras."
A range of dogs was used for the study,as the team needed to map distinct behaviours that correlated between different breeds.

19.To Amer ican visitors,Iceland is a very interesting country, partly because it is different in so many ways from he or she is used to seeing at home. There are quite a few things that are not done,or that do not exist on the island-quite a few"No's".
There is no pollution, for instance,no dogs are permitted in Reykjavik, the capital. There is no television on Thursdays or during the entire month of July, and only three hours of blackandwhite TV the rest of the time. There is no hard liquor on Wednesdays and no beer at any time. There is no handguns; only one jail of thirtyfive cells (獄室) in the entire land-an admirable figure, even for a small country of 313,376 people.

The rules on television liquor and guns are the result of government decisions. But the absence of pollution is due in great part to the fact that Iceland gets its power from the enormous geyser and the thousands of hot springs that come out of the ground. They provide all the energy needed by the country. In fact,Iceland uses only 3 percent of all its available power.
Iceland has been described as a democratic independent country where more fish are caught and more books published per person than anywhere else in the world. The Icelanders have always felt a particular love for literature. They composed their first books in the ninth and tenth centuries AD.These works were poems and tales about the kings, heroes, and heroines of Iceland and Norway. At first, the stories were memoried and passed from generation to generation. They were finally written down between 1140 and 1220.The Icelanders have never stopped writing ever since."Rather shoeless than bookless,"they proudly say.

18.Saving the planet one plateful at a time does not mean cutting back on meat, according to new research:the trick may be to switch our diet to insects.
The raising of livestock such as cows, pigs and sheep occupies two thirds of the world's farmland and produces 20% of all the greenhouse gases driving global warming. As a result, the United Nations wants to reduce the amount of meat we eat and the search is on for alternatives.
Professor Arnold van Huis says eating insects(昆蟲) has advantages(優(yōu)勢)."There is a meat crisis,"he said."The world population will grow from six billion now to nine billion by 2050 and we know people are consuming more meat.Twenty years ago the average was 20kg,it is now 50kg,and will be 80kg in 20 years. If we continue like this we will need another Earth."
"Most of the world already eats insects,"he points out."It is only in the western world that we don't.Psychologically(心理上的) we have a problem with it.I don't know why,as we eat shrimps, which are very comparable."
The advantages of this diet include insects'high levels of protein, vitamin and mineral content.Being coldblooded, insects change plant matter into protein extremely efficiently. In addition, the health risks are lower. He acknowledges that in the west eating insects is a hard sell,"It is very important how you prepare them, you have to do it very nicely,to overcome the yuk factor."
Durst helped set up an insect farming project FAO project in Laos. This involves transferring the skills of the 15,000 household locust farmers in Thailand across the border."There were some supporters of a bigger dairy industry in Laos to improve a calcium(鈣) deficiency,"says Durst."But this is crazy when most Asians are lactose (乳糖) intolerant(不耐受)."Locusts and crickets are calciumrich and 90% of people in Laos have eaten insects at some point.Durst says the project will be to increase the eating of insects where this is already accepted but has been in decline due to western cultural influence.

25.According to Van Huis, westerners don't eat insects becauseB.
A.there are fewer nutriments in insects
B.they can't overcome a mental barrier(精神障礙)
C.insects aren't as delicious as shrimps
D.insects don't have much meat themselves
26.It can be inferred from what Durst said thatD.
A.Laos is where locusts and cricket are eaten most
B.people in Laos are good at cooking eating insects
C.eating insects in Laos is much more popular at presen t
D.milk isn't suitable for most Asian people to increase calcium
27.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?A
A.Insects Are the Future of Protein
