Any pet owner will tell you how much joy a pet brings.For some,an animal provides more comfort than a husband/wife.A 2002study by Karen Allen of the State University of New York measured stress levels and blood pressure in people (half of them were pet owners) while they performed 5minutes of mental arithmetic (算術(shù)) or held a hand in ice water.People completed the tasks alone,with a husband/wife,a close friend or with a pet.People with pets did it best.Those tested with their animal friends had smaller change in blood pressure and returned most quickly to baseline heart rates.With pets in the room,people also made fewer math mistakes than when doing in front of other companions.It seems that people feel more relaxed around pets,says Allen,who thinks it may be because pets don't judge.
A study reported last fall suggests that having a pet dog may also have an effect on your body weight.Researchers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital spent a year studying two groups of fat people who were put on a diet-and-exercise program:one group with pet dogs,and the other without.On average,dog owners lost about 11pounds,or 5% of their body weight; While those without dogs lost about 8pounds.The pet owners,said researchers,got more exercise overall (mostly with their dogs) and found it worth doing.
45.What does the text mainly discuss?C
A.People's opinions of keeping pets.

A.They are less nervous.
B.They are in higher spirits.
C.They become more patient.
D.They have lower blood pressure.

4.Foldable walking sticks help the visually impaired and blind people find out their surroundings and guide their way.But the guide stick only offers very limited information.The users still have to find and avoid obstacles by themselves.The good news is that new high-tech sticks are on the horizon.
Last year researchers in India tried to make the walking stick smarter.They did some experiments to improve the tradition stick and they gave it a new name-Smart Cane(手杖).The device uses an attached receiver and a sensor that gives out a loud sound to warn its users when an obstacle is within three meters.It gave off flashes of red light and heated the handle by its original design.But researchers soon realized that the red light was of little use and the heating system couldn't function well in summer days.
Some are taking a bigger challenge.Students at the Birmingham City University are developing a cane that can even identify people as they approach.Called the XploR cane,it includes a tiny digital camera that analyzes the faces of people walking by and compares their images against a database stored on a memory card in the cane's handle.
If there's a facial recognition match,the cane sends a message to the user's smart phone via Bluetooth.The phone then identifies the approaching person to the user via its speaker or earphones.The students are building a sample and they'll test later this year.
The difficulties they have met are obvious:facial recognition is a tough problem,especially outdoors.But if the XploR works,it could actually provide the visually impaired and the blind with much convenience-especially those who hardly remember people's names.

21.What is the text mainly about?D
A.Blind people are living a difficult life.
B.The process of inventing a smart cane is hard.
C.It is of great importance to care about the blind.

A.making a sound
B.heating the handle
C.identifying the distance
D.giving off flashes of light
23.What is the main problem in making the XploR?C
A.Building a sample of XploR.
B.Sending a message to the user's phone.
C.Recognizing faces of approaching people.

What can you do when you are unhappy?If you want to let out your anger or pressure by breaking things,you just do.Now a school in Nanjing has built a"stress wall"to help students who feel unhappy due to heavy schoolwork or for other reasons.
The leader of the school said the idea of a stress wall started when footprints were found on some newly painted walls and some school windows were broken.
"These things happen because some students feel lots of pressure from their studies or because they don't get along well with other students.When under stress,the body gets ready to either run or fight and becomes very nervous.Hitting the wall can help relax the body and take away stress,"he said.
"Tests and homework make me sad,"said a junior girl,"I can't wait to hit the wall.It will help me a lot with my problems."However,another girl student who wouldn't give her name said,"The wall won't help because it can't talk,"and she added,"I need to talk to someone when I'm sad."

1.There are good reasons to cherish our friendships.Some years ago a public-opinion research firm,Roper Starch Worldwide,asked 2007people to name one or two things that said the most about themselves.Friends far outranked homes,jobs,clothes and cars.
"Ironically,"says Brant R.Burleson,professor of communication at Purdue University in West Lafayette,Ind.,"the better friends you are,the more conflicts you may face."And the outcome can be what you don't want-an end to the relationship.
The good news is that most troubled friendships can be mended.
Swallow your pride.It wasn't easy,but that's what Denise Moreland of Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii did when a friendship turned sour.For nearly four months,Moreland,45,had watched over Nora Huizenga's two young daughters,who were living with their father on the base,while Huizenga,40,completed training as a dental hygienist in Nevada."I felt honored to be asked to step in,"Moreland says.
"When Huizenga returned at Christmas,"Moreland recalls,"I had so much to tell her, but she never called."
One daughter had a birthday party,but Moreland wasn't invited."I felt like I'd been used,"she says.At first,Moreland swore to avoid Huizenga.Then she decided to swallow her pride and let her friend know how she felt.Huizenga admitted that she'd been so worried about being separated from her family that she'd been blind to what her friend had done to help her.Today she says,"I would never have figured out what happened if Denise hadn't called me on it."
When a friend hurts you,your instinct is to protect yourself.But that makes it harder to solve problems,explains William Wilmot,author of Relational Communication."Most of us are relieved when differences are brought out in the open."
Apologize when you're wrong-even if you've also been wronged.But over the course of a friendship,even the best people make mistakes."We don't think clearly when we're arguing,"says Michael Lang,a professional mediator (調(diào)解人) in Pittsburgh.Instead,says Lang,ask:"What's going on?This doesn't make sense."
See things from your friend's point of view.Sociologists Rebecca Adams Rosemary and Blieszner interviewed 53adults who each had many friendships lasting decades."We were curious how these people managed to sustain strong friendships for so long,"says Blieszner.Tolerance is key,the researchers learned."It's surprising how often a dispute results from a simple misunderstanding,"adds psychotherapist Anne Frenkel.
Accept that friendships change."Friendships change as our needs and lifestyles change,"Wilmot observes.
Making friends can sometimes seem easy,says Yager.The hard part is keeping the connections strong during the natural ups and downs that affect all relationships.Her suggestion:Consider friendship an honor and a gift,and worth the effort to treasure and nurture.

Title:Keep on your friendships
Our friendships
should be(71)cherished/treasured.
According to a survey, most people put friends in the first (72)rank.However,you are more(73)likrlyto face conflicts if you are better friends.
Tips on how to mend a broken friendshipSwallow your prideWhen a friendship is damaged,it only makes things worse to escape from reality.Instead,we should lay down our self-esteem and (74)expressour feelings straightforwardly to our friends.
Make an(75)apologywhen you are mistakenWe should (76)avoidarguing since it makes no sense at all.
