A student was one day taking a walk with his teacher. As they went along, they saw a pair of old shoes lying in the path. They were a poor farmer's, who was working in the nearby field.
The student turned to the teacher, saying: “we will hide his shoes, and hide ourselves behind those trees, and wait to see what he will do.”
“My young friend,” answered the teacher, “we should never make fun of the poor. Why not put a coin in each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch?” The student did so and they both hid themselves behind the trees. The poor man soon finished his work, and came across the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes.

A new book called “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” by Amy Chua has caused a debate (爭(zhēng)論) about cultural differences in parenting. Amy Chua is a teacher in an American university and both of her parents are Chinese. In the book, Ms. Chua writes about how she taught her daughters. She told NBC television that she had a clear list of what her daughters were not allowed to do, such as having a play date, watching TV or playing computer games and getting any grade less than an A.
Many people are against Amy Chua's parenting style (風(fēng)格), even her husband, who is American. They say it is rude and unfair to children. But she says her parents raised her and her three sisters in that way.
Ms. Chua says after her younger daughter shouted “I hate my life! I hate you!” she decided to retreat because she was afraid of losing her daughter. But she also says American parents often have low expectations of their children's abilities.
“The debate is about what it means to be a successful parent and what it means to be a successful child,” said Stacy DeBroff, who has written four books on parenting. She says Amy Chua's parenting style is not limited to Chinese families. It is a traditional way of parenting among immigrants (移民). They hope to get a better future for their children.
She also sees a risk (風(fēng)險(xiǎn)). When children have no time to be social or to develop their own interests, they might not develop other skills that they need to succeed in life. DeBroff advises parents to develop their own style of parenting and not just repeat the way they were raised.
(1)Which of the following words can best describe Amy Chua?
A.Polite.
B.Cruel.
C.Strict.
D.Popular.
(2)The underlined word “retreat” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to _____.
A.give up
B.go on
C.go out
D.give out
(3)According to Ms. DeBroff, _____.
A.Amy Chua's parenting style should be forbidden
B.Americans should learn from Amy Chua
C.parents should have their own parenting style
D.Amy Chua's style is bad for children's growth
(4)In which part of a newspaper can you read the passage?
A.Business.
B.Entertainment.
C.Sports.

One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. But how can you be a good friend at school?
Listen — Listen when they are talking. Don't say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes it's not necessary for you to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings.
Help them — If your friend is ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you don't do everything they want you to do. Try to take an extra (額外的) pencil or pen with you to classes in case (以防) they forget one. Have a little extra money in your pocket in case they forget something they need.
Be there for them — Try to make something for your friend to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and encouraging them are among the nicest things you can do for a friend. Marilyn Monroe, a famous U.S. actor, once said, “I often make mistakes. Sometimes I am out of control. But if you can't stay with me at my worst, you are sure not to deserve (值得) to be with me at my best.” Always remember this! If you don't want to stay with your friends when they're in hard times, then you don't deserve to be with them when they're having a good time!
Make plans — Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Take time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. By planning things together, you both can have a good time. And you'll remember these things when you're all old!
(1)While your friend is talking to you about his or her feelings, you should ________.
A.give him or her some advice
B.just listen unless asked
C.calm him or her down
D.share your feelings as well
(2)When we provide help for our friends, we should ________.
A.try to do everything for them
B.put them before ourselves

C.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
D.A man is known by his friends.

On a Sunday morning, I was driving down a road and saw something I couldn't believe. A little girl, less than two, was pushing her stroller (嬰兒車) across the road. It was Sunday morning and traffic was not heavy.
I stopped my car at once and ran toward her. This little girl knew enough to run from a stranger. I tried to catch her in order that I could get her out of the road.
Suddenly her father came running down a hill across the road from where I had parked my car. He ran right to her and caught her up, saying “bad girl” to her. I picked up the stroller and gave it to him. The father grabbed the stroller and walked toward where he came from without a word.
I went back and sat in my car for a few minutes with my son. My hands were shaking and tears were about to run out of my eyes. “Do you feel cold, Mom?” asked my son. I just shook my head.
After this happened, I thought about how thankful I am. Even though the father didn't say thank you, I feel that I did something good. Doing something for someone else is pleasing, even when it's only a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
I didn't really “save” her, but I feel like it was important that I happened to be there. It is sad that I was the only one who stopped. It really made me a little disappointed that no one else stopped to help.
(1)When the author saw the little girl, ________.
A.the girl had lost her way
B.she was driving to work in a hurry
C.the girl feared to go across the road
D.there weren't many cars on the road
(2)The little girl ran away from the author because ________.
A.she wanted to stay on the road
B.she didn't know the author at all
C.she wanted to look for her father
D.she needed to catch her stroller
(3)The author thought that her help was ________.
A.really necessary
B.worth praising
C.not welcome
D.not useful
(4)What can we learn from the passage?
A.The girl's father didn't like the girl at all.
B.The girl's father had wanted to thank the author.
C.The author shared her experience with her son.
D.The author felt sad that no one else helped the girl.

As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students. I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.
Do not value first impression highly. Don't dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that.
Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.
Don't try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you. It is a huge waste of time.
Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs. Don't argue with them and just obey them.
Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn't a closed environment. What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn't working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.
A. Do not be too quick to judge.
B. So just learn to say the word “No” a lot.
C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.
D. Many of these are based on regrets that I have.
E. Bad habits are hard to break and remain with you for a long time.
F. Don't spend any effort trying to please others who will never like you.
G. It is a free society where people accept responsibility for their actions.

【題目】根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容, 填寫表格。
We are a primary school in England. Our students start arriving at our playground from about 8:45 a.m. Most of the children live nearby, so they walk to school. But some children have to travel to school by car. Each of the children is dressed in a school uniform (校服) and carries the homework and packed lunch in a schoolbag.
School starts at 8:55 a.m. The teacher on duty blows a whistle (哨子) and the children line up in their class groups. They wait quietly for the teacher to send them to their classrooms. When they arrive at their classrooms, the children empty their schoolbags and put their homework in their boxes. After the children take their seats, the teacher reads out each child's name in turn. Upon hearing his / her name, the child replies “yes, Mrs. (the teacher's name)” and the teacher writes down whether the child is in school or not.
And then at 9:10 a.m. the children attend an assembly in our main hall. They sit on the floor in rows with the youngest children at the front and the older children at the back. As the children enter the hall, they listen to music quietly. Each week we have a different musical theme (主題). Besides, the children also listen to stories.
After the assembly, the first lesson of the day begins at 9:30 a.m. Our morning lessons are usually English and Maths. Each of these lessons lasts an hour. Between classes, the children have their morning break from 10:20 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. They eat their snacks (小吃) or play games like football on the playground. At the end of the break, the teacher on duty blows a whistle. The children stand still and wait to be told to line up.
Each day, the children have their lunch break from 12 noon to 1:10 p.m. Most of the children bring their own packed lunches from home. A packed lunch usually consists of sandwiches, fruit, a drink and a packet of crisps. Some children have a school dinner cooked in our school kitchen. While the children are waiting to have lunch or after they have finished eating, they play games on the playground or attend lunch-time clubs. We have teachers on duty, who look after the children during lunch breaks. After the lunch break, the children have afternoon lessons, which continue until 3:15 p.m. when the children go home.
