Student Council

There are a lot of different people in the world, but despite our differences we all want to get along. Humans are social beings, and we enjoy being treated nicely. 【1】 It is about treating people with respect and care.

Be a good listener. To start a conversation, it is important to listen first, especially when you are in a group. Don’t indulge（放縱）yourself in instant chant when you have just arrived. Examine the situation and the conversation, and then say whatever you think fit. It is better to say something valuable, rather than something meaningless. 【2】 Don’t try to change people. It is not your job to change anyone else. It is not in your power to change anyone else.

Let other people live how they want to live. 【3】 If you do not like how someone acts, you can arrange things so that you interact with them as little as possible. You can always maintain a good attitude towards them so that your relationship with them might be change.

Keep a smile. A little laughter goes a long way, and a smile cases tensions, wheres a frown can create tensions. If someone teases you, try to laugh at it off. If someone is frowning, smile at them. Be mindful of your facial expression. If you are persistently and optimistic, people will cheer up when they are see you coming.

【4】 Some people do not take hints. Some people do not read body language. For these people, it really works to just say,” I really want us to work well together. I will help you and back you up, and you help me and beck me up.”

Sociologists have long recognized that organization of less than 200individuals can operate through the free flow of information among the members.Once their size goes beyond this figure, the organizations are getting lessflexible. So it seems necessary to prevent total disorder resulting fromfailures of communication.

One solution to this problem would, of course, be tostructure large organizations into smaller units of a size that can act as agroup. By allowing these groups to build reliance on each other, largerorganizations can be built up. However, merely having groups of, say, 150 willnever of itself be a complete solution to the problems of the organization.Something else is needed: the people involved must be able to build directpersonal relationships. To allow free flow of information, they have to be ableto communicate with each other in a casual way. Maintaining too formal astructure of relationships inevitably prevents the way a system works.

The importance of this was drawn to my attention twoyears ago by the case of a TV station. Whether by chance or by design, it sohappened that there were almost exactly 150 people in the station. The wholeprocess worked very smoothly as an organization for many years until they weremoved into purpose-built accommodation. Then, for no apparent reason, the workseemed to be more difficult to do, not to say less satisfying.

It was some time before they work out what the problemwas. It turn out that, when the architects were designing the new building,they decided that the coffee room where everyone ate their sandwiches at lunchtimes was an unnecessary luxury and so did away with it. And with that, theyaccidentally destroyed the close social networks that strengthened the wholeorganization. What had apparently been happening was that, as people gatheredinformally over their sandwiches in the coffee room, useful information wascasually being exchanged.

The College Entrance Exam, also known as Gaokao, is one of the most influential tests scheduled 【1】 June 6th to 8th. For this, Chinese students are separated into Science and Liberal Art at high school, a practice that allows them to stay 【2】(compete) in the College Entrance Examination by choosing preferred subjects. However, thing began to change when the policy of College Entrance Exam Reform 【3】(publish).

And now, an ongoing reform of China’s college entrance exam and enrolling system, 【4】 which students used to be selected for their performance on a single test, 【5】(extend) to cover more provinces in China since 2018, according to the Ministry of Education.

In 2018, the reform was expanded to eight provincial-level 【6】(region), namely Hebei, Liaoning, Jiangsu, Fujian, Hubei, Hunan, Guangdong and Chongqing, where Year-1 high school students 【7】(start) from fall 2018 needed to prepare for the change.

It brought the total number of regions implementing the reform 【8】 14, according to the ministry.

With the reform, the new selection and enrollment rules may differ slightly from region to region. In northern China's Hebei Province, students will only have to sit the annual national college entrance test for three subjects, Chinese language, math and foreign language 【9】 (include). Their performances during high school academic tests will also serve as measurable indicators. Their results in the comprehensive quality evaluation throughout the high school will be used as 【10】 reference.

Poetry Around a Campfire

Morning Walk at Mitchell Park

Meet at 8:30 am at the entrance to Mitchell Park, Mitchell Park Rd, for a pleasant walk wandering through rainforest, river flats and dry forest to swampland. Binoculars (雙筒望遠(yuǎn)鏡) a must to bring as many birds live here. Finish with morning tea.
