In China, traveling by train is a common way to visit new places and go back to one’s hometown during holidays. But in the US, traveling by train is almost an ancient tradition … although it wasn’t always that way.

The US railway system started to grow in 1826, with many railway 【1】 (company) starting up and competing with each other to build new railway routes. Trains became a symbol of progress, with New York City’s Grand Central Station becoming a major 【2】 (culture) landmark.

March 12 is memorable because our class had a meaningful experience in that day. In the morning, we cycled to suburbs to plant trees, talking and laughed all the way. Upon arrival, we began to work hardly. Some were digging holes. Some are carrying and planting young trees. Others were watering it. After getting the work done, we put up a board reminding of people to protect the trees. Before leaving we took some photo to record our green action. Last month, I find that my little brother looked up to me. I noticed he started copying way that I was dressed. He even began copying my ways of speaking and greet my friends. At first, I thought that he was play jokes. So I yelled at him, “Knock it off.” Much with my surprise, he burst into tear. Then I realized that what he was doing those things just because he admired me. To comfort my sadly brother, I took him to shop at the store for a blue shirt like me. Our mother smiled proud when we happily came back home in our shirts.

Globalization has brought different cultures together in a way unimaginable one hundred years ago. 【3】 There seems to be a sort of cultural unity.

We don’t wish to imply all cultures are the same. Cultural diversity is real, and people from different cultures view many situations in different ways. However, historically, different cultures seem to share many common values. They are justice, courage, patience, generosity, equality, mercy and kindness, respect for the elders, and many more. Lying and stealing appear to be wrong no matter where you go. Perhaps some cultures make room for extenuating (情有可原) circumstances more than others; perhaps cultures apply these virtues in different ways; and when values disagree, different cultures may place different levels of importance on them. 【4】 But both cultures may still value both.

To us, it seems as if there is some sort of code of right and wrong that everyone everywhere seems to understand, regardless of culture. It is almost as if, behind all of the diversity, one finds a common understanding—a human culture, if you will—that goes beyond racial, social, and political boundaries. 【5】

Alice, a shark that lives at the National Sea Life Center in England, did not start out life as a vegetarian.
