Most of us learn at primary school that there are seven continents, but the next generation of kids may be adding one more to that list.

According to a recent paper published 【1】 in the Geological Society of American Journal by a group of researchers, “Zealandia” is a new continent that’s hidden beneath the ocean.

Zealandia is 【2】 to be five million sq. km. Most of this massive area is covered by water, but its highest mountains already have their own name: New Zealand.

The small country is the only part of Zealandia that isn’t underwater, but the paper’s authors want the huge landmass to be recognized worldwide as its own continent.

“The 【3】 value of classifying Zealandia as a continent is much more than just an extra name on a list,” the researchers wrote in their paper.

Scientists discovered Zealandia all the way back in 1995, then started extensive research on the area 【4】 underwater and satellite mapping technology. After completing their work, they were 【5】 able to write a report suggesting that Zealandia be named a continent.

But who decides on what is a continent and what isn’t? There is, in fact, no official organization that does. Some countries’ schools teach that there are six or even five continents. This changes 【6】 on where in the world school is.

Due to their 【7】 as a “continuous expanse of land”, some classify Europe and Asia as the same continent --known as Eurasia. Schools in Russia and parts of Eastern Europe teach this.

And to make things even more 【8】, France and Greece, as well as other countries, classify North America and South America as simply America.

This 【9】 over how land is defined has even stretched into outer space. In 2006, the International Astronomical Union（IAU）decided that Pluto was no longer a planet, 76 years after its discovery in 1930. Experts argued that it no longer met the requirements needed to be called a planet alongside the eight others in our solar system. It was therefore renamed a “dwarf planet（矮行星）”，meaning that countless books, models and museum exhibits all over the world had to be 【10】.

The dove

The dove has been a symbol of peace and innocence for thousands of years in many different cultures. In ancient Greek mythology it was a symbol of love and the renewal of life. In ancient Japan a dove carrying a sword symbolized the end of war. There was a tradition in Europe that if a dove flew around a house where someone was dying then their soul would be at peace. And there are legends which say that the devil can turn himself into any bird except for a dove. In Christian art, the dove was used to symbolize the Holy Ghost and was often painted above Christ's head. But it was Pablo Picasso who made the dove a modern symbol of peace when he used it on a poster for the World Peace Congress in 1949.

The rainbow

The rainbow is another ancient and universal symbol, often representing the connection between human beings and their gods. In Greek mythology it was associated with Iris, the goddess who brought messages from the gods on Mount Olympus. In Scandinavian mythology the rainbow was a bridge between the gods and the earth. In the Bible a rainbow showed Noah that the Biblical flood was finally over, and that God had forgiven his people. In the Chinese tradition, the rainbow is a common symbol for marriage because the colours represent the union of yin and yang. Nowadays the rainbow is used by many popular movements for peace and the environment, representing the possibility of a better world in the future and promising sunshine after the rain.

The olive branch

The olive tree has always been a valuable source of food and oil. In Greek mythology, the goddess Athena gave the olive tree to the people of Athens, who showed their gratitude by naming the city after her. But no one knows for sure when or why it began to symbolize peace. There is probably a connection with ancient Greece. Wars between states were suspended during the Olympic Games, and the winners were given crowns of olive branches. The symbolism may come from the fact that the olive tree takes a long time to produce fruit, so olives could only be cultivated successfully in long periods of peace. Whatever the history, the olive branch is a part of many modern flags symbolizing peace and unity. One well-known example is the United Nations symbol.

It’s a perfect family summer seaside holiday. Occasionally some white clouds floated across the blue sky. The sandy beach was soft and comfortable. The water was glistering in the morning sunlight and the surf was cool on their feet as Krin and Paula leisurely walked along the water edge. The brother and sister began to make some sandcastles. Not far away, mother sat under a big umbrella, reading a book with a bottle of lemonade in her hand. Father was busy exchanging a few words of greetings with the strangers he met on the beach.

Suddenly, Krin spotted some pieces of seashells lying scattered on the picturesque beach and small holes stretching along it where the crabs had hidden. He immediately invited Paula to collect shells and search the holes together with him. They were having a ball exploring what appeared to be a never-ending beach.

After a while, they stopped and looked back. Their parents and the umbrellas, beach chairs, and crowds were a long way off. But just ahead, hidden amongst sea grape trees stood a run-down house that seemed to be out of repair for years. It appeared to be unoccupied. Curious, they went to investigate.

The front steps to the doorway of the house creaked (嘎吱作響) as they carefully climbed up them, so did the porch when they stepped onto it. The dusty windows and porch railing (門廊 欄桿) were badly weathered and broken. The front door was half open so they squeezed through and cautiously entered. The place was in a total mess, covered with dust, sand, dead leaves, and overturned furniture. They’d taken but a few steps when the door unexpectedly slammed shut behind them.

Scared, Krin and Paula were frozen to the spot. But before they could even utter something like “Oh-oh,” the windows abruptly closed, too. And if this wasn’t scary enough, the stairs to the second floor creaked loudly. When a light in the back bedroom flickered (搖曳), that was absolutely the final straw.

Dear Bill,

You must know how deeply saddened I was over your loss. Your sister and I were the dearest friend and recalling the past, I dare saying she was like a sister to me. I will miss him very much.

I could always count at her whenever I needed help, whether with a big project and a small task that she was always so willing to help me with. I came to trust her judgment and wise as well and her advice were always so well thought out and helpful.

She was a terrible great friend and I know our lives will never be same without her. I could never find a better and more caring friend. She has been left us with so many wonderful memories. I will cherish them forever.
