A young, dark haired woman appeared in the doorway.
"Good morning, children! My name is Mrs. Murray. I am replacing your regular teacher," she said, as
she wrote her name on the blackboard. "I will enjoy getting to know each of you personally, over the
next few months."
The children in the class remained silent, as this was totally unexpected.
"Come on, someone say something," she thought nervously. The children were too quiet.
"This probably won't last long," she thought, smiling kindly at them. Grade Three students were normally
very lively and seldom, if ever silent. "If you have problems, please come to me. I will help you."
The children gradually began to relax, but not one of them spoke.
"How can I get them to accept me?" she wondered. Suddenly, she had an idea.
"Your first homework will be to write a new song. To make it even more exciting, challenging and fun for
everyone, it must be a new love song for Valentine's Day. The winner will be awarded a prize, at our class party."
The children looked amazed, but pleased.
"You may sing your new song, or play it with a musical instrument."
As if something had suddenly awakened the children, the silence in the room ended suddenly.
"A love song?" a boy asked, smiling sweetly, at his new teacher.  [來(lái)源:Zxxk.Com]
"We each have to write one," said a dark haired girl, "We never had to do that before."
"And perform it too!" a red haired boy responded, laughing aloud. "I love it! Me, sing a love song?"
"Want to know what the first prize will be?"
Immediately, every hand in the room went up.
Mrs. Murray reached into her handbag and pulled out a harmonica(口琴).
"What do you think of this?" She waited.
"I am also a music teacher, so I will be able to help you write your new love songs." added Mrs. Murray,
smiling at her new students. Obviously, her smile and intelligent idea about the homework impressed every student in the class.

Galaxy saw a man and a woman who communicated with the sign language at the train station when
she was on the way home one evening. She noticed that the woman asked the man for the direction. He
told her that he did not know. Galaxy decided to help them. She had learned the sign language when she
served as a volunteer in the deaf and mute(聾。﹕chool. Then she showed the woman the direction
and left her email address to them in case they needed her help later.
She received an email from that man the next day. Kazrim was his name. Galaxy replied his mail
sincerely. They both started chatting online soon after and began seeing each other. Although they only
communicated with the sign language, it never bothered her.
Galaxy was fond of him gradually. Obviously, Kazrim was the same too. He presented Galaxy with
a bunch of sunflowers and asked her sincerely, "Are you willing to be my girlfriend?" Galaxy was
pleasantly surprised. She requested him to give her some time to persuade her parents.
As she had expected, her parents were very angry after they had learned of their love story. Galaxy
explained, "Kazrim is an excellent and a very optimistic person. He has a very positive attitude towards
life and work. He cares for others always. He is 100% better than the normal. Moreover, the mute is
still a human. He should possess a perfect and wonderful love."
Her parents asked to see him, then. The very worried Galaxy took Kazrim home a few days later.
When they were on the train, Kazrim told her, "I'm going to tell your parents I’ll be looking after you
well with all my life!" Galaxy was deeply moved.
As soon as they had entered the house, Galaxy introduced him to her parents. She said, "This is
Kazrim." Just right after her speech, an unbelievable thing happened. Kazrim threw the gift away and
held her in his arms tightly.
He said, "YOU CAN TALK?" It was the same question that Galaxy wanted to ask, too. The four
people were shocked all of a sudden. As a matter of fact, Kazrim always believed that Galaxy was a

Grandpa Nybakken loved life-especially when he could play a trick on somebody. At those times,
his large Norwegian frame shook with laughter while he pretended innocent surprise, exclaiming, "Oh,
forevermore!" But on a cold Saturday in downtown Chicago, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on
him, and grandpa wasn't laughing.
Grandpa worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes
his church was sending to an orphanage abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to
find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back
to the church. His search proved fruitless.
Suddenly, he realized what had happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and
fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand new glasses were heading for China!
The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for
those glasses that very morning.
"It's not fair," he told God as he drove home in frustration. "I've been very faithful in giving of my time
and money to your work, and now this."
Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted
to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's
small church in Chicago.Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the small congregation
(教堂會(huì)眾).
"But most of all," he said, "I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year."
"Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses.Along with not being
able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my co-workers and I were much in prayer
about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my staff removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses
lying on the top." After a long pause, he continued, "Folks, when I tried on the glasses, it was as though
they had been custom-made just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!"
The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses. But the director surely must have confused their
church with another, they thought, there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.
But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the
Master Carpenter
had used him in an extraordinary way.

1. Which of the following is NOT true about Grandpa Nybakken according to the passage?

A. Grandpa didn't tell the director that he was the owner of the glasses
B. the director wanted to return the glasses even though he liked it

D. the glasses were not included in the donation list
3. Who does "the Master Carpenter" in the last paragraph probably refer to?

Jack lay, quiet and unmoving, for thirty minutes while a stranger repeatedly stabbed(刺) him with
sharp needles, causing blood to pour steadily out of his leg. Jack was getting a tattoo. His friend Tony
had recently gotten a tattoo, and Jack was so impressed by it that he decided to get one too. Peer
pressure, media influence, and personal expression are some of the common reasons for wearing
tattoos today.
The desire to be accepted by one's friends or peers can have a great influence on what a person
does. Sometimes, wearing a tattoo can be a sign that you belong to a certain group. Gangs often use
special clothes and tattoos to identify their particular group. Some of these groups wear only brand-name
clothes. Others wear tattoos. When a person's friends are all doing something, that person is more likely
to do the same thing.
The media is another big influence behind the popularity of tattoos in North America. A wide variety
of media images show tattoos-people appearing in commercials selling expensive cars, famous sport
s heroes with tattoos in magazines, fashion models wearing designer clothes that show their bodies
tattooed with detailed and colorful patterns. These media images link tattoos to ideas of wealth,
success, and status. As a result, many people decide to get a tattoo for its fashion and status value.
Many people decide to wear tattoos in order to express their artistic nature, their beliefs, or their
feelings-in other words, to show their individuality(個(gè)性). A musician in a rock band may get a tattoo
of a guitar on the arm. Some environmentalists may tattoo pictures of endangered animals on their
shoulders. A tattoo can be a public sign to show what is important in a person's life.
As you can see, there are many reasons why young North Americans get tattoos. A tattoo can be
part of a group's uniform, a sign of fashion, or an expression of individuality. The decision to get a tattoo
is most often a result of the influence of friends or media or the desire to express oneself. For Jack, it
was a mixture of all three.
1. Jack has got tattoos in order to ________.
A. show his great bravery
B. gain a special experience
C. make himself more healthy
D. be different from others
2. According to the passage, media images are linked to ________.
A. traditional lifestyle
B. social position
C. cultural background
D. public interest
3. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. some people get tattoos out of pressure
B. tattoo is related to religious belief
C. getting tattoos costs a lot of money

1  She described all the things she had to do-one was to make her bed-from the moment she
woke up until she flew out of the door for work. I suggested she experiment by not making her bed

Two weeks later she went into my office beaming. She had left her bed unmade for the first time in

about managing time: No one can do it all. Each of us has to make choices and accept trade-offs. The
problem is, many people choose in ways that put themselves and their health last. They take better care
of their houses and cars than they do of themselves. 4
So what is the solution? There's an easy way. Decide what you want in your life, and put that first.
On a daily basis, that should include regular meals, enough sleep and time with your family. Exercise,
leisure, friendships and hobbies should also be regular aspects of life. 5 The choice is yours: whatever
makes you feel good about yourself and your life. Take a nap. Take a walk. Take time to play the piano.
Stop bringing your briefcase home from the office. Stop keeping your house as clean as your mother
kept hers. Fill more of your time with want-to-dos instead of have-to-dos.

When I try to   5   surfing with other things, I find it very difficult because, in my   6  , there's nothing like it.
It involves body,   7  , and soul. There's sand between my toes and cool, salt water all   8   us. The feeling I get
when I'm surfing across that   9  , becoming one with the  10 , is like I'm weightless.
The one thing I can  11  from surfing and not any other sport is endless challenge. You can never be the "best

surfing styles are wonderful. Some surfers are free and flowing; others are very aggressive (活躍有力的) and

I've  15  to tell every girl I know to do something that people don't think girls can do. It's part of being human
to advance to new  16 , so shouldn't it be expected that girls should step up and start  17  the limits of things boys
and men used to dominate (主宰)?
There're women  18  side by side with the President of our country, so why not side by side with the boys
19  the football team or out in the water surfing? Give girls a chance to  20 , and they will.
