Sitting by her Pinocchio lamp, she smiled at me as her tiny hands' shadow danced on the bedroom
wall. "A rabbit!" she laughed with all the delight of a four-year old. Her blue eyes shone with pride as
she showed me the animated image she had created. "Daddy, will you show me how to make a tiger?"
she asked. "Sure," I said, "and then we'll read a story and tell your angels goodnight. "To my youngest
daughter, that meant her bedtime prayer.
Today my daughter is seven, and I no longer get to read the story. She reads it to me, complete with
expressive accents for the story characters.
To say I'm proud of our relationship would be an understatement. We have shared days of joy as
well as tragedy. Our time together has strengthened the relationship of love and special "life stuff" that is
all our own.
I am richer for having planted the spirit of trust in this gentle little person; we have grown together
spiritually, learning much from each other. The special times we spend together, like nights by a Pinocchio
lamp, create memories that we will treasure for the rest of our lives.
So it is with all of our relationships. The trust factor is vital for relationships to develop. Think of on
e of your fondest memories, and you will no doubt find a remarkable relationship at its center--one with
a spiritual quality that shines outward from the heart.
Time together, caring acts, and unconditional love build trust. I suggest that we each spend plenty of
time with our personal "Pinoechio lamps"--those special ways that we choose to strengthen our
relationships.
Relationships take time to develop and maintain. It is not always easy, but the results are priceless.
"Nights by a Pinoechio lamp", wherever those might be for you, will create enduring relationships of
golden "life stuff", spiritual gifts that no one can take away.

1. The underlined words in the third paragraph refer to all EXCEPT ______.
A. hands' shadow dancing on the wall
B. reading bed stories
C. sharing each other's tragedy
D. praying to the angels for goodnight

2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The author thinks the relationship with his daughter is so simple that he can't
     describe with plenty of words.
B. If you take time to attempt to build relationship, you will find it easy to get the satisfactory results.
C. Plant the spirit of trust into others and you will create valuable memories for each other.
D. It's not worth spending time developing relationship if you meet the failure at last.

3. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To recall his fondest memories.
B. To stress the importance of trust in building relationships.
C. To explain how to create valuable memories.
D. To tell the readers how to educate children.

4. Which of the following can be the best title of this passage?
A. Life Stuff Of Your Own
B. Nights by a Pinocchio Lamp
C. Unconditional gifts-Love
D. A spiritual quality shining outward from the heart

The first time I saw Carlos, I had my arms full of books and I was tearing into the classroom when I
ran into something solid. It was Carlos.
     "My, you're tall," he exclaimed.
Of course, the class began to laugh. Annoyed, I walked to my seat without a word.
I glanced back to see if Reed Harrington was laughing with the rest. That would be last straw. To my
relief, Reed was studying and did not seem to be aware of it. I didn't know why I considered Reed my
friend. Maybe just because he was a good two inches taller than I.
"Take that seat," Mr. McCarthy told the newcomer, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the
room.
Carlos smiled broadly. "But I need a couple of dictionaries." Again the class laughed, but now they
were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had them on his
side.
It was the school election that made me think of Carlos again. Reed Harrington was voted president
and Carlos vice-president. "How come?" I kept asking myself. "How come this shrimp(蝦) who's only
been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular?"
So when I met Carlos this morning, I said to him. "It doesn't seem to bother you being short, I mean."   He looked up at me. "Of course I mind being short. But there isn't anything I can do about it. When I
realized I was going to have to spend my life in this undersized skin, I decided to make the best of it. My
motto is-don't be afraid to be yourself."

1. This passage is mainly about a short boy who _____________.
A. won the school election
B. is ashamed of his height
C. has learned to accept his size
D. is embarrassed by the class

2. From the story, we can see that Carlos is _____________.
A. shy but diligent
B. humorous and confident
C. proud and popular
D. honest but sensitive

3. Paragraph 4 suggests that the author _____________.
A. cared much about Reed's attitude
B. thought Reed was the same as the others
C. couldn't stand Carlos playing ricks on her
D. hoped Reed was laughing with the others

4. According to the passage, what happened after the election?
A. Carlos and the author argued with each other.
B. Carlos and Reed became very good friends.
C. The author changed her attitude toward Carlos.

It seems that no matter when and where, a cat and a mouse just can't get along well. Cats always like
to run after mice; therefore, whenever a mouse meets a cat, the mouse will try to run away as fast as
possible. But, like everything else, there is an exception sometimes.
On day, a young mouse ran around for fun under a tall tree by himself. Maybe because of running too
fast, the mouse accidentally kicked up a small piece of rock. The rock went up to the air then dropped
down hitting a newborn kitten which happened to be taking a nap under the same tree a few feet away
from the mouse's amusing place. The cat's body was covered by the falling leaves so the mouse did not
notice a cat sleeping nearby.
The kitten was only a few weeks old. He had never seen a mouse. After being hit, he woke up and
found that the rock was from another animal.
"What kind of strange animal is it? The inexperienced kitten thought, It must have lots of power as it
could kick up a piece of rock to hit me." The kitten was scared. Without mother by side, the kitten ran
home immediately.
The incident made the young mouse very proud. He told his friends, the other mice, "Everybody says
that a mouse is afraid of a cat, but today a fact proved that a cat was afraid of me." So the mouse
announced that he would not escape any more when he saw a cat again. The young mouse's friends
