For many in the United States,Arab-Americans are an invisible part of the population.
Though Arab-Americans as a community have made great contributions to American
society in fields from literature to politics to medicine, many Americans know very little
about Americans of Arab backgrounds.
Arab history in the United States goes back to the late 1800's when large numbers
of Arab immigrants first began making their journey to a land known simply as"Amreeka".
Historians generally describe Arab immigration to America in two waves. The first wave
took place between 1860 and 1924.The first wave consisted of Lebanese and Syrian, and
some Egyptian immigrants. These new immigrants, who were mostly Christian, came to
America in search of better opportunities.Even the doomed Titanic, which set sail for
America in 1912,had close to a hundred Arab passengers aboard. The majority of
Arab-Americans today are descendents of the first wave of immigrants;they are the third
or more generation Americans.
The second wave of immigrants followed after World War Ⅱ,caused by political unrest
in the Middle East. This second wave of immigrants consists of mainly Arab Muslims(穆斯
林)and continues to this day.
Arab-Americans make up 3 million of the population in the United States, according to
demographers. And quite different from popular belief,64 percent of them are American-born.
Eighty-two percent of Arab-Americans are US citizens.
Arab-Americans are beyond the national average in both education and income.Education
is important among Arab-Americans;82 percent have high school diplomas,36 percent have
bachelor's degrees or higher,and 15 percent have graduate degrees.The-median(中位數(shù)的)
average income among Arab-Americans is $39 580,which is higher than the US average.

New York times, Nov, 24,2011-It is not just any bug, but the native nine-spotted ladybug.
And its reappearance is something of a relief, because it is the official New York State insect,
even though the last recorded sighting of it in New York was 29 years ago.
Its absence had not gone completely unnoticed. There was a moment in 2006 when the State
Assembly, realizing that the state insect had left the state, tried to replace it with a different species
of ladybug, an attempt that fortunately gave in to law.
And now-after all these years-the state insect has been found. Like so many other New Yorkers,
it was seen summering in Amagansett. Peter Priolo, a volunteer participant in an effort called the
Lost Ladybug Project, found the ladybug on July 30 in a patch of sunflowers during a group search
he had organized.
"I didn't realize it was a nine-spotted when I found it," Mr. Priolo said. He was on his way to do
an end-of-the-day ladybug record, so, he said, "I put it in my jar and hurried back to meet with
everybody."
If the ladybugs are making a comeback, it is only beginning. The lost Ladybug Project started
surveys in 2000. As of 2006, only five nene-spotted ladybugs had been found in North America in
the previous 10 years, none of them in the East. Then one lone ladybug was found in Arlington,
Va. None had been found in the East since, and only 90 have been reported in North America.
After scientists at Cornell confirmed Mr. Priolo's find, they went to the Amagansett farm in
mid-August to lead a search that turned up about 20 more of the bugs. An area between rows of
carrots and beans turned out to be a hot spot. "We found a lot of them on cosmos and zinnias," said
Dr. Losey said, an insect expert. The farm is part of the 10,000-acre Peconic Land Trust in Amagansett,
and it is organic. For ladybugs, Dr. Losey said, "you couldn't design a better place."
Dr. Losey wants to find out if it makes sense to reintroduce this strain of the ladybug in other areas.
And he expects volunteers to be back out in the field when ladybug season starts again in the spring.
Now, he said, "we need to find out more places where there are just as many."

A good cell phone policy should be a required part of any company. It not only covers liability (法律責任) issues, but also covers many other legal and financial challenges that might cause you problems. For instance, there is an IRS guideline that requires company cell phones to be used only for business purposes. Personal use of these devices is considered as a taxable benefit, which can be considered as part of your income and therefore must be included in the income to be declared for tax. Then how to make a good cell phone policy? Here are some tips for you to follow. Make sure there are provisions (條款) in your cell phone policy for business and personal use. You must make it clear what is allowed and what is not. A good Cell phone policy should clearly show your managers and employees the company-wide rules for cell phone usage. This will avoid some managers making their own decisions. Employees should understand that cell phones are controlled not by them, but by a company authorized (公司批準的) employee who is the only person authorized to order devices, assign plans, manage devices and the like. This will prohibit employees from ordering whatever services they want. Another mobile device issue is liability for damage (賠償責任). A good cell phone policy also states responsibility for lost or damaged phones and how to report problems. This will prevent confusion and help keep costs under control. Once you have a company cell phone policy in place, make sure you read and discuss it thoroughly with all of your employees. Have them sign the policy to ensure that they understand the information contained within. Be sure to provide employees with a copy of the policy. This will help reduce your company's liability for any legal issue that may arise. |
