It's 5:00 in the morning when the alarm (鬧鐘)rings in my ears.I roll out of bed and walk blindly through the dark into the bathroom.I turn on the light and put on my glasses. The house is still as I walk downstairs while my husband and three kids sleep peacefully.Usually I go for a long run, but today I choose my
favorite exercise DVD, Insanity.Sweat pours down my face and into my eyes.My heart races as I force
my body to finish each movement. As I near the end of the exercise, I feel extremely tired, but a smile is on my face. It's not a smile because the DVD is over, but a smile of success from pushing my body to its
extreme limit.
Some people enjoy shopping, smoking, food, work, or even chocolate. But I need exercise to get
through each day. Some shake heads when they see me run through the town.Others get hurt when I refuse to try just one bite of their grandmother's chocolate cake. They raise their eyebrows, surprised by my "no
thank you," or by my choice to have a salad.Over the years, I have learned it's okay to just say "no." I
shouldn't feel sorry for refusing food that I don't want to eat.
So what drives me to roll out of bed at 5∶00 a.m.? What gives me the reason to just say no to ice
cream? Commitment.A commitment to change my life with a way that reduces daily anxiety, increases
selfconfidence and energy, extends life and above all improves my body shape. This is the point where a
smile appears on my face as I look at myself in the mirror or try on my favorite pair of jeans that now fit
just right. It's through commitment and sweat that I can make a difference within myself inside and out.

The global energy crisis is approaching. What can we do? Here are some steps you can take.
Cooling puts the greatest stress on your summer energy bill and the power grid(電網(wǎng)). Just as a tuneup for your car can improve your gas mileage, a yearly tuneup of your heating and cooling system can improve efficiency and comfort.Clean or replace filter monthly or as needed.
For central air conditioning systems and room air conditioners, look for the ENERGY STAR, the
federal government's symbol for energy efficiency. For central air, purchase the system with the highest
possible Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratia.(SEER)
Use energyefficient ceiling fans either alone or with air conditioning.Ceiling fans do a great job of
circulating air. When used with air conditioning, fans allow you to raise the thermostat(恒溫器) and cut
costs.Ceiling fans cool people, not rooms, so before you leave, turn off the ceiling fan.
Let a programmable thermostat "remember for you" to automatically adjust the indoor climate with your daily and weekend patterns to reduce cooling bills by up to 10 percent. You can come home to a
comfortable house without wasting energy and creating pollution all day while you are at work.
Try to make your home airtight enough to increase your comfort, make your home quieter and cleaner and reduce your cooling costs up to 20 percent.
Cut your air conditioning load, and reduce pollution by planting leafy trees around your home and fixing reflective bricks on your roof.
Close blinds or shades on southand westfacing windows during the day, or fix shading equipment to
avoid heat buildup.
Turn off everything not in use: lights, TVs, computers. And use fluorescent bulbs(熒光燈), which
provide bright, warm light while using at least twothirds less energy, producing 70 percent less heat and
lasting up to 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs(白熾燈).
Drive the car that gets better gas mileage whenever possible if you own more than one vehicle. If you
drive 12,500 miles a year, switching 10 percent of your trips from a car that gets 20 miles per gallon to one that gets 30 mpg will save you more than $65 per year.
Carpool. The average U.S.commuter(乘車上班族) could save about $260 a year by sharing cars
twice a week with two other people in a car that gets 20.1 mpg-assuming the three passengers share the
cost of gas.
1. According to the passage, the thermostat is used to __________.
A. make rooms quieter
B. control room temperature

A. planting leafy trees around your home
B. turning off the ceiling fan before you leave your house
C. keeping your southfacing windows open during the day

B. sharing cars with others on workdays
C. turning off everything not in use
D. reducing 10% of your car trips every year

     Exploit your parking space
An unused parking space or garage can make money. If you live near a city center or an airport, you
could make anything up to£200 or£300 a week. Put an advertisement (廣告) for free on Letpark or
Atmyhousepark.
     Rent (出租)a room
Spare room? Not only will a lodger (房客)earn you an income, but also, thanks to the
governmentbacked "rent a room" program, you won't have to pay any tax on the first £4,500 you make
per year. Try advertising your room on Roomspare or Roommateeasy.
     Make money during special events
Don't want a fulltime lodger? Then rent on a shortterm basis. If you live in the capital, renting a room
out during the Olympics or other big events could bring in money. Grashpadder can advertise your space.
     Live on set
Renting your home out as a "film set" could earn you hundreds of pounds a day, depending on the film
production company and how long your home is needed. A quick search on the Internet will bring up
dozens of online companies that allow you to register your home for free-but you will be charged if your
home gets picked.
     Use your roof
You need the right kind of roof, but some energy companies pay the cost of fixing solar equipment
(around £14,000)and let you use the energy produced for nothing. In return, they get paid for unused
energy fed back into the National Grid. However, you have to sign a 25year agreement with the supplier, which could prevent you from changing the roof.

________.
A. £300
B. £500
C. £4,500

Squirrels often communicate with whistles, chirps  and chucks, which sound like the word "chuck".
Whistles and chirps are like the  sounds that many birds make. Now scientists have translated some of
their  squirrel-speak.
Hare, a professor of zoology at the University of Maniloha in Winnipeg, and his team managed to
record squirrels' alarm calls. The researchers studied the sounds and then  played them back to 60 wild
squirrels, which the scientists approached individually with a video recorder to capture(抓拍)their
responses. Some squirrels lifted their heads up and  became. alert(警惕的). Creatures that were more
frightened simply ran for their lives and dived into caves.
"In effect then, whistles that mix with chucks say 'there's an enemy of average threat that's here', and
whistles without chucks say 'there's an enemy of seemingly average threat around here somewhere', while pure chirps say, 'I'm hiding here because there's an immediate danger.'" Hare told Discovery News.
Hare and some other researchers believe such sounds are part of an advanced language that develops
just as all other communication systems.
Although squirrels risk their lives when they call out to warn others of threats, other squirrels might
admire this behaviour, thus increasingly the caller's social status, like humans who look up to heroes.
Hare added that other animals, such as birds, probably understand at least some squirrel language, since
they also may benefit from the alarm calls.
In fact, another Canadian study found that deep-voiced, black-capped chickadees  have their own
language too. According to certain research, there are a lot of tidings in chickadees' calls, such as
directing fellows' activities, keeping in contact between mates, and raising alarms.
While chickadees and other birds are often welcomed into gardens by homeowners, squirrels are
frequently viewed as pests(害獸) . Hare wishes a greater understanding of the complex social lives and
communication systems of squirrels will provide hope that humans will gain a greater appreciation and
stop doing harm to these animals.
1. The text mainly talks about ________.
A. the study on the language of squirrels
B. the comparison between squirrels and chickadees
C. the calling for the protection of squirrels
D. the ways for squirrels to escape from their enemies
2. If a squirrel is in a very dangerous situation, it would probably make ________.
A. whistles with chucks
B. pure chirps
C. whistles without chucks
D. repeated chucks
3. The underlined word"tidings"in Paragraph 6 probably means________.
A. difficulties
B. praises
C. messages
D. languages
4. What can be learned from this text?
A. Squirrels communicate with each other as humans do.
B. Some squirrels understand the recorded alarm calls.
C. Other animals also well understand the language of squirrels.
D. Birds such as chickadees don't have their own language.

While watching the Olympics the other night, I came across an unbelievable sight. It was not a gold
medal, or a world record broken, but a show of courage.
The event was swimming and started with only three men on the blocks. For one reason or another,
two of them false started, so they were disqualified. That left only one to complete. It would have been
difficult enough, not having anyone to race against, even though the time on the clock is important.
I watched the man dive off the block and knew right away that something was worng. I'm not an
expert swimmer, but I can tell a good dive from a poor one, and this was not exactly medal quality.
When he resurfaced, it was evident that the man was not out for gold-his arms were waving in an
attempt at freestyle. The crowd started to laugh. Clearly this man was not a medal competitior.
I listened to the crowd begin to laugh at this poor man who was clearly having a hard time. Finally he
made his turn to start back.It was pitiful. He made a few desperate strokes and you could tell he was
worn out.
But in those few awful strokes, the crowd had changed.
No longer were they laughing, but beginning to cheer. Some even began to stand and shout "Come
on, you can do it!" and he did.
A clear minute past the average swimmer, this young man finally finished his race. The crowd went
wild. You would have thought that he had won the gold, and he should have. Even though he recorded
one of the slowest times in Olympic history, this man gave more heart than any of the other competitors.
Just a short year ago, he had never even swum, let alone race. His country had been invited to
Sydney.
In a competition where athletes remove their silver medals feeling they have somehow been cheated
out of gold, or when they act so proudly in front of their competitors, it_is_nice_to_watch_an_underdog.
1. From the passage we can learn that the young man ______.
A. made his turn to start back pitifully
B. was skillful in freestyle in the game
C. swam faster than the average swimmer
D. was not capable enough to win the medal
2. The crowd changed their attitudes because ________.
A. they felt sorry for the young man
B. they were moved by the young man
C. they wanted to show their sympathy
D. they meant to please the young man
3. According to the passage, "it_is_nice_to_watch_an_underdog" probably means ________.
A. it's amusing to watch a man with awful swimming skills
B. it's amazing to watch an ordinary man challenging himself
C. it's cheerful for athletes to act proudly before their competitors
D. it's brave enough for some athletes to remove the silver medals
4. What's the best title for the passage?
A. Compete for Gold!
B. Try again!
C. Break a Record!
D. Go for it!

Vans, Keds, Dollies-they sound like the names of rock bands, but if you have teenagers, you'll know
they're actually the latest in teenage footwear.
But experts are now warning that the current shoe fashions will be causing teenagers discomfort in the
short term and storing up years of foot, knee and back pain in the future. Here, the experts identify the
problems caused by teenagers' shoe choice.
KEDS/VANS

Slipon shoes with elastic (彈性的) sides are particularly  popular  among  teenage  boys-with Keds
and Vans the most soughtafter brands.
The main problem is that they are just too flat-so flat that the heel, which strikes the ground first, also
becomes damaged and painful.

     BALLET PUMPS
The worst shoes of all are such light and thin dolly shoes. The problem is partly their flatness, as with
Keds and Vans. However ballet pumps, which have no string or heel, have other specific problems.
"As the shoe has no fastening device, it relies on the toes to keep the shoe on, causing an awkward
gait (步法) , this leads to short-and longterm problems such as calluses (繭子), heel and knee pain."

     WEDGES AND STILETTOS
These shoes can also cause problems with gait. They may look good, but the heels on these are so
high they can force the wearer's body weight forward, making them very unstable.
Teens who wear these shoes regularly are also in danger of joining those millions of women with constant
back pain.
     SCHOOL SHOES
So what do podiatrists (足科醫(yī)生)have on their wish list, especially for everyday wear?
Something in a natural, breathable fabric, with a string to hold it on, with a small heel and a deep
toebox that does not press the toes, such as Clark's, Marks & Spencer or Rhino.
If your teen insists on wearing 'bad' shoes, get them some simple foot orthotics(矯形器) in the shoes.
These support and correct the movement of the foot and, properly fitted by a podiatrist, can often
transform their walk and halt the damage.
1. Of all the shoes mentioned in the passage, which can cause the worst problems?
A. Marks & Spencer.
B. Wedges & Stilettos.
C. Keds and Vans.
D. Ballet Pumps.
2. Which pair of shoes may NOT be found on the podiatrists' wish list?
3. The underlined word" halt" in the last paragraph probably means________.
A. increase
B. worsen
C. stop
D. cure
4. From this passage we can infer________.
A. trendy shoes may ruin teenagers' health
B. fashionable shoes all have orthotics in them
C. experts are strongly against wearing popular shoes
D. podiatrists are expert at producing branded shoes

When traveling in the Canadian Rockies by car, I often notice a road sign that says, "A fed bear is a

to throw their food from their cars for the bears.   2  , the bears turned to the roadside for food and slowly
lost their ability to take care of themselves. When winter came, fewer travelers took to the mountains, which   3   less food for the bears, some of whom starved or frozen to death. So the Canadian government   4   warning signs along the road, essentially advising people not to feed the bears.
