I came to live here where I am now between Wounded Knee Greek and Grass Greek. Others came
too, and we made these little grey houses of logs that you see, and they are square, It is a bad way to live, for there can be no power in a square.
You have noticed that everything an Indian does is in a circle, and that is because the Power of the
World always works in circles, and everything tries to be round. In the old days when we were a strong
and happy people, all our power came to us from the respectful circle of the nation, and so long as the
circle was unbroken, the people were getting rich. The flowering tree was the living center of the circle, and the circle of the four quarters nursed it. The east gave peace and light, the south gave warmth, the west
gave rain, and the north with its cold and strong wind gave strength and continuous power. This knowledge came to us from the outer world with our brief. Everything the Power of the World does is done in a circle. The sky is round, and I have heard that the earth is round like a ball, and so are all the stars. Birds make
their nests in circle, for theirs are the same as ours. The sun comes forth and goes down again in a circle.
The moon does the same, and both are round. Even the seasons form a great circle in their changing, and
always come back again to where they were. The life of a man is a circle from childhood to childhood, and so it is in everything where power moves. Our places were like the nests of birds, and these were always
set in a circle, the nation's circle, a nest of many nests, where the Great Spirit meant for us to nurse our
children.
But the Wasichus (Indian word for "white people") have put us in these square boxes. Our power is
gone and we are dying, for the power is not in us any more. You can look at our boys and see how it is
with us. Where we were living by the power of the circle in the way we should, boys were men at twelve
or thirteen years of age. But now it takes them very much longer to be bull - grown.
1. According to the passage, the Indians _______.
A. don't have modern instruments in their homes
B. refused to move from round places
C. lived in round places, but were forced to live in square houses
D. lived in round places, but then decided to move into square houses
2. Two things being compared in the passage are _______.
A. the Indians' past and present living conditions
B. the Indians' past and modern beliefs
C. the Indians' old and new power
D. people and nature
3. In the second paragraph "the four quarters" refers to _______.
A. the four rooms of the Indian's house
B. the four kinds of natural power
C. the four seasons
D. the four directions
4. According to the author, once the Indians moved into square houses, _______.
A. they had to move to other houses
B. boys took more time to grow into men
C. they forgot the old way of life
D. everyone was not happy

The UK has a well-respected higher education system and some of the top universities in the world.
But to those who are new to it all, it can be something confusing.
October is usually the busiest month in the academic calendar (學(xué)習(xí)日程表). Universities have
something called Freshers' Week for their newcomers. It's a great opportunity to make new friends, join
lots of clubs and settle into university life.
However, having just left the comfort of home and all your friends behind, meeting lots of strangers in
big halls can be uneasy. Where do you start? Who should you make friends with? Which clubs should
you join?
Luckily, there will be thousands of others in the same boat as you are worried about starting their
university social life. So just take it all in slowly. Don't rush into anything that you'll regret for the nex
t three years.
Here are some top tips from past students on how to survive Freshers' Week:
Make sure you know something about the British social customs. Have a few wine glasses and snacks
handy for your housemates and friends.
Sometimes cups of tea or even sweets can give you a head start in making friends.
The more active you are, the more likely you'll be to meet new people than if you're someone who
never leaves his rooms.
Keep your door open when you're in and that sends positive messages to your neighbors that you're
friendly.

soon you'll be passing on your wisdom to next year's newcomers.

Many of us still tend to think that emotions can affect reasonable thought, and sometimes land us in
trouble. But in recent years psychologists have taken quite a different view. Keith Oatley, Professor of
psychology at Glasgow University, is involved in the research which shows the fundamental importance
of emotions.
He believes we are very ambivalent about them: we think of our emotions as being unreasonable, but
we also consider them as essential to being human. For example, Mr Spock, a character in the television
series Startrek is super-intelligent--and he has no emotions at all! However, he is never made captain of
the spaceship. Maybe, this is because Mr Spock is not the kind of person you can share your feelings
with-a person who shows his emotions.
As Professor Oatley points out, our emotions have very important functions, for example, fear. If we
cross the road and a car approaches, we usually stop moving or step back. We stop what we are doing,
check what we have done-and pay very careful attention to the environment. The emotion of fear makes
us take this small series of actions which, on average, help preserve our safety.
On the other hand, if things are going well and small problems come up, we find we can solve them
with the resources we have to hand. As a consequence, we tend to feel happy and usually continue doing
the job.
Anger is an emotion that tends to occur when someone is preventing us from doing something. Then
this small "kit" of reactions enables us to prepare ourselves to be quite aggressive to that person, or to try
harder, and so on.
Professor Oatley believes emotions generally occur at these important moments in actions. With fear
and anger our emotions make us decide to start doing something else, while with happiness they "suggest" we continue what we are already doing.
1. What's Keith Oatley's opinion about emotions?
A. They affect reasonable thought.
B. They get us into trouble.
C. They are helpful to us.
D. They are reasonable.
2. What does the underlined part "we are very ambivalent about them" in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. We have contradictory feelings towards emotions.
B. We have similar ideas of emotions.
C. We are quite clear about emotions.
D. We can do nothing about emotions.
3. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A. Fear helps us to be careful about our surroundings.
B. Happiness inspires us to continue what we are doing.
C. Anger may urge us to make greater efforts.
D. Anger tends to do us more harm than good.
4. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. we must control our emotions in daily life
B. emotions play a more important part than we realize
C. positive emotions such as love and joy are good for us
D. negative emotions make us continue what we are doing

For centuries, the body's blood has been linked closely with the emotions. People who show no human
emotions or feelings, are said to be cold-blooded killer. For example, the police are searching for a cold-blooded killer. He seems to kill for no reason, and no emotion, as if taking someone's life as nothing.
Cold can affect other parts of the body. The expression"get cold feet" has nothing to do with cold or your
feet. The expression means being afraid to do something you have decided to do. For example, you agree to be
president of an organization. But then you learn that all the other officers have resigned, and all the work of the
organization will be your responsibility. You are likely to get cold feet about being president when you
understand the situation.
The expression "give someone the cold shoulder" probably comes from the physical act of turning your
back toward someone, instead of speaking to him face to face. You may give a cold shoulder to a friend who
has not kept a promise he made to you. Or, to someone who has lied about you to others.
A cold fish is not a fish. It is a person. But it is a person who is unfriendly, unemotional and shows no love
or warmth. A cold fish does not offer much of himself to anyone. Someone who is a cold fish could be
cold-hearted. Now a cold-hearted person is someone who has no sympathy (同情心).Several popular songs in
recent years were about cold-hearted men or cold-hearted women who, without feelings, broke the hearts of
their lovers.
Out in the cold means not getting something that everybody else got. A person might say that everybody
but him got a pay raise---he was left out in the cold. And it is not a pleasant place to be.
1. There are _____ expressions related to cold that are mentioned in the passage.
A. 3
B. 4
C. 6
D. 7
2. When you refuse to speak to a man and treat him in a distant way, you may express by "_____".
A. I give him the cold shoulder
B. I think he is a cold-blooded man
C. I think he is a cold fish
D. I'm likely to get cold feet
3. If Sue shows absolutely no reaction (反應(yīng)) to those awful pictures of starving children in Africa,
    you will say _____.
A. she is a cold-blooded killer
B. she gets cold feet
C. she is a cold fish
D. she is out in the cold
4. We can use the expression "_____" to describe a man who hurts his lover without mercy.
A. cold-blooded
B. cold shoulder
C. cold feet
D. cold-hearted
5. The topic of this passage is about _____.
A. the relationship between cold and our body
B. some expressions about friendship
C. some expressions connected with cold
D. how cold weather comes into being

"A good book for children should simply be a good book in its own right," says Mollie Hunter. Born and
brought up near Edinburgh, Mollie has devoted her talents to writing primarily for young people. She firmly
believes that there is always and should always be a wider audience for any good book whatever its main
market is. In Mollie's opinion it is necessary to make full use of language and she enjoys telling a story, which
is what every writer should be doing."If you aren't telling a story, you're a very dead writer indeed," she says.
With the chief function of a writer being to entertain (讓人愉快), Mollie is indeed an entertainer."I have this
great love of not only the meaning of language but of the music of language," she says. "This love goes back
to early childhood. I've told stories all my life. I had a school teacher who used to ask us what we would like
to be when we grew up and, because my family always had dogs, and I was very good at handling them, I said
I wanted to work with dogs, and the teacher always said 'Nonsense, Mollie, dear, you'll be a writer.' So finally
I thought that this woman must have something, since she was a good teacher and I decided when I was nine
that I would be a writer."
This childhood intention is described in her novel, A Sound of Chariots, which although written in the third
person is clearly autobiographical (自傳體的) and gives a picture both of Mollie's ambition (理想) and her
struggle towards its achievement. Thoughts of her childhood inevitably(不可避免地) brought thoughts of the
time when her home was still a village with buttercup meadows and strawberry fields-sadly now covered with
modern houses."I was once taken back to see it and I felt that somebody had lain dirty hands all over my
childhood. I'll never go back," she said."Never.""When I set one of my books in Scotland," she said,"I can
recall my romantic (浪漫的) feelings as a child playing in those fields, or watching the village blacksmith at
work. And that's important, because children now know so much so early that romance can't exist for them,
as it did for us."
1. What does Mollie Hunter feel about the nature of a good book?
A. It should not aim at a narrow audience.
B. It should be attractive to young readers.
C. It should be based on original ideas.
D. It should not include too much conversation.
2. In Mollie Hunter's opinion, which of the following is one sign of a poor writer?
A. Being poor in life experience.
B. Being short of writing skills.
C. The weakness of description.
D. The absence of a story.
3. What do we learn about Mollie Hunter as a young child?
A. She didn't expect to become a writer.
B. She didn't enjoy writing stories.
C. She didn't have any particular ambitions.
D. She didn't respect her teacher's views.
4. In comparison with children of earlier years, Mollie feels that modern children are _____.
A. more intelligent
B. better informed
C. less eager to learn
D. less interested in reality
5. What's the writer's purpose in this text?
A. To describe Mollie Hunter's most successful books.
B. To share her enjoyment of Mollie Hunter's books.
C. To introduce Mollie Hunter's work to a wider audience.
D. To provide information for Mollie Hunter's existing readers.

I credit my typing skills to so many hours of chatting online. Unfortunately, as my typing speed increased
on the Internet, all grammatical rules went out of the window. You see, instant messengers have their own
shorthand language and grammar isn't important, of which even a newbie (新手) is aware. They can leave
out articles, subjects, pronouns, etc. They can misspell or "re-spell" almost any word. They often ask "A/S/L"
when they first chat. Abbreviations and capitalizations are particularly important. English-speaking instant
messengers also refuse to burden themselves with punctuation and capitalization.
After I came back China, I discovered not one but two instant messaging crazes. The first, which brought
back memories of my previous addiction to the computer, was QQ. I can see evidence that the Chinese have
the same kind of separate instant messaging language, even when they chat in English. My first word in this
language, for example, was "ft". This abbreviation for"faint" is used whenever there is a need to express
surprise. I also discovered that the Chinese use the same kind of abbreviation for a laugh. And there is an
extraordinary number of smileys and icons available to express every emotion and reaction, from the traditional
"sleepy" and"doubtful" smileys to the "vomit" and "army soldier" smileys. There's even a SARS smiley.
After QQ, there is another, perhaps more widespread, messaging trend. You guessed it-cell phone text
messaging. I now understand how useful text messaging is and why it is so common. I admit that I have been
guilty of sending text messages while walking outside or sitting on the subway. Who hasn't? No matter where
I go, I see people on their cell phones, messaging. In fact, it's rare to see someone actually talking on their
phone!
So it looks as if there's no escape from the instant messaging crazes, no matter where in the world I go.
And that's plainly not going to change. In the end, though, I can't complain: instant messaging is quick, it's
cheap, it's easy and it's extreme fun too. And after all, everybody's doing it.
1. The underlined phrase "went out of the window" in Paragraph 1 probably means ____.
A. increased
B. occurred
C. disappeared
D. changed
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Grammar and correct spelling are very important while chatting online.
B. There are enough smileys and icons to express yourselves while chatting online.
C. The writer is skilled at typing and once was addicted to online games.
D. It is impolite to leave out some unimportant words or letters while chatting online.
2. The writer believes that instant messaging is ____.
A. full of fun but time-consuming
B. widespread but unnecessary
C. quick but difficult to do
D. common, useful and cheap
3. The writer believes that instant messaging is ____.
A. full of fun but time-consuming
B. widespread but unnecessary
C. quick but difficult to do
D. common, useful and cheap
4. Which might be the main idea of the passage?
A. Who can escape QQ and cell phone text messaging?
B. Why is instant messaging so popular?
C. Chatting online is good for your typing skills.
D. Chatting on QQ is natural for people.
