America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close andreal, yet disappear
soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a
year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while - then no more. If the same two people meet again by
chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to
understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings,
extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, share their holidays, and their home life.
They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly
in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness  to us if it requires a great deal of time.
This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time.
Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may
take days off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome
usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily
activities. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And
they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full,
warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to
restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

1. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Friendships between Americans usually extend deeply into their families.
B. Americans will continue their friendships again even after a long break.
C. Americans always show their warmth even if they are very busy.
D. Friendships between Americans usually last for all their lives.

2. From the last two paragraphs we can learn that when we arrive in America to visit an American
friend, we will probably be ______.

A. treated hospitably at his home
B. offered a ride to his home
C. warmly welcomed at the airport
D. treated to dinner in a restaurant

3. The underlined words "generous with our time" in Paragraph 3 probably mean ______.

A. strict with time
B. serious with time
C. willing to spend time
D. careful with time

4. A suitable title for this passage would probably be "______".

A. Friendships between Chinese
B. Friendships between Americans
C. Americans' hospitality
D. Americans' and Chinese's opinions of friendships

Scientist Florence Wambugu works with farmers in Kenya, a country in East Africa. She helps them
grow bigger and better crops. Wambugu is especially interested in finding simple ways to produce more
food.
In the past ten years, Wambugu has spent much of her time studying sweet potatoes, which are an
important food in her part of Kenya. A virus (病毒) kept attacking the plants. It stopped the sweet
potatoes from growing well. Because of the virus, some farmers lost three quarters of their crops.
Wambugu went to war against the virus. Her research for a way to save the sweet potatoes led to a
lab in St. Louis, Missouri.
The lab mainly works on genes (基因), the chemical "computer programs" found in the cells of living
things. Genes tell a plant to produce pink flowers or an animal to grow black hair. Now scientists have
found ways to move genes from one living thing to another. That process is called genetic engineering.
Wambugu spent three years in the lab. As a result, she created a sweet potato plant that could fight off
the virus. Wambugu tested her research in Kenya, and her plants produced wonderful sweet potatoes.
That's just the beginning, Wambugu believes. Genetically modified (轉(zhuǎn)基因的) foods, she thinks, could help farmers in poor countries grow badly needed crops, thus, fewer people will go hungry.
1. The text is written mainly to _______.
A. tell us sweet potatoes are in danger of being attacked by a virus
B. introduce Wambugu's contribution to genetic engineering
C. introduce a new way of killing plant viruses
D. tell how hard Wambugu worked in her lab for three years
2. What caused Wambugu to set up a lab in St. Louis, Missouri?
A. Her wish to save sweet potatoes in Kenya.
B. Her great interest in genetic engineering.
C. Her love for sweet potatoes.
D. Her interest in plant life.
3. The fourth paragraph mainly explains what ________ is.
A. a crop virus
B. chemical technology
C. a computer program
D. genetic engineering
4. What is Wambugu's attitude toward "genetic engineering"?
A. It will help more hungry people.
B. It should be carefully used.
C. It has more disadvantages than disadvantages.
D. It is a too expensive technology at present.

How do you repair a broken friendship?I'll give you several tips below.
To begin with,a real friend is a treasure (財(cái)富).You don't throw a friend away because your feelings got hurt or you are unwilling to discuss a misunderstanding.Don't let senselss things destroy your friendship. To me,if it's worth the fight,it is worth the sacrifice (犧牲).If you can't sacrifice to keep the friendship,
then maybe it isn't true friendship.

they are,or even to admit their share of guilt.Go to them.Make the first move.Raise the white flag first.
However you want to look at it,be willing to do what it may take to heal the relationship. Many friendships stay wounded or destroyed because both waited for the other to make the first move and neither did.
Remind each other that the friendship is more important.A simple reminder of how special the
friendship is will go a long way to soften a hard heart.Be willing to take the higher ground.I have a policy in my marriage that if there is a disagreement in values,we always take the higher one.If you can't come up to your friend's level, you will begin to estrange him.I feel that the friendship is more important than my
personal position. The higher ground is always safer anyway.

Marriages improve after children grow up and move out, according to an academic study, which
suggests an "empty nest" is not always a bad thing.
Popular wisdom has it that parents' relationships may suffer once their young fly the coop, because
they feel they have lost their purpose in life. However, a new study by researchers at the University of
California,  Berkeley, has found that many couples actually feel happier when their children leave home
because they are able to enjoy spending time together.
In total,123 American mothers born in the 1930s were tracked for 18 years and asked to rate their
satisfaction levels shortly after marrying, when they were bringing up babies, once their children reached
their teenage years and finally at age 61, when almost all had "empty nests".
Although not all said they were happier in general, most claimed their marriages had improved since
their children had left home.Researchers believe this is not just because the spouses were spending more
time together, but because they were able to enjoy each other's company more.
One of the participants in the study, which is published in the journal Psychological Science, said:"
Once the kids grow up...there's some of that stress removed...that responsibility removed, so things are
a little more relaxed."
Psychologist Sara Gorchoff, who carried out the investigation, said:"The takehome message for
couples with young children is 'hang in there'. " Her coauthor Oliver John added:"Don't wait until your
kids leave home to schedule quality time with your partner."
However, Dr Dorothy Rowe, from the British Psychological Society, said the effects of living in an
"empty nest" will depend on the parents' relationship with their children."If you're just waiting for them
to leave home so you can get on with your life, then of course you'll be pleased to see them go, " she
said, "But if you've built your life around your children you'll be terribly lonely. For some parents, their
world falls apart when their children leave."

1. It is commonly believed that________.

A. marriages improve after children leave home
B. an "empty nest" is always a happy thing
C. parents' relationships may suffer once their young grow up and move out

D. When they were bringing up babies.

A. many couples are able to spend time together
B. many couples are able to enjoy each other's company
C. things are a little more relaxed
D. many couples needn't work at all
