Some people take lots of exercise. Others keep strict diets. But according to   recent research, the
best way to live a long and happy life is simple. Get a dog.
"We have known for many years that the company of a pet can increase
well-being in a number of ways. " says Dr. Bonnie Beaver, an animal behavior
specialist at Texas University.
"For example, the survival rates of heart attack victims with pets are much greater than those of
people without pets."
According to Dr. Beaver, pet owners are less likely to need a doctor. They recover more quickly
when they do get ill. They have lower blood pressure, take more exercise and are more socially active.
Above all, they are happier. Seventy percent of the families Dr. Beaver surveyed said that their family
environment was happier after they got a pet. And this is what Dr. Beaver and other researchers are
trying to achieve. They want to find a scientific link between human happiness and a long life.
There is no final answer to this question yet, but it seems to be something to do withemotional ties.
People with someone or something to love live longer. "There are many forms of animal-human
relationship and some are very helpful." says Dr Beaver. It seems that the more lovely an animal is, the
more it benefits our health.  As the saying goes, "If you want to be loved, get a dog."
Pet ownership benefits men and women equally. Other life experiences divide the sexes. Women
are more sensitive to bad marriages than their husbands because they work harder at their relationship,
says Dr. Janice Glaser of Ohio State University.
The message seems to be that a woman is better off with a good dog than a bad husband. Yet in
some ways, men are similar to dogs. They like getting dirty and making a mess. They forget birthdays.
They can disappear for days. How can they be better trained?

My house is made out of wood, glass and stone. It is also made out of software.
If you come to visit, you'll probably be surprised when you come in someone will give you an
electronic PIN (個人身份號碼) to wear. This PIN tells the house who and where you are. The
house uses this information to give you what you need. When it's dark outside, the PIN turns on
the lights nearest to you, and then turns them off as you walk away from them. Music moves with
you too. If the house knows your favorite music, it plays it. The music seems to be everywhere, but
in fact other people in the house hear different music or no music. If you get a telephone call, only the
nearest telephone rings.
Of course, you are also able to tell the house if you want something. There is a home control console,
a small machine that turns things on and off around you.
The PIN and the console are new ideas, but they are in fact like many things we have today. If you
want to go to a movie, you need a ticket. If I give you my car keys, you can use my car. The car works
for you because you have the keys. My house works for you because you wear the PIN or hold the
console.
I believe that ten years from now, most new homes will have the systems that I've put in my house.
The systems will probably be even bigger and better than the ones I've put in today.
I like to try new ideas. I know that some of my ideas will work better than others. But I hope that one
day I will stop thinking of these systems as new, and ask myself  nstead, "How will I live without them?"

1. What does the passage mainly discuss?
     A. How to develop a new system.
     B. The function of the PIN
     C. A home for the future
     D. Easy life in the future.

2. What's the purpose when the writer wrote the fourth paragraph?
     A. To let readers know why his ideas are new
     B. To explain what the functions of the PIN and the console are
     C. To explain the importance of the PIN and the console.
     D. To let readers know how special his house is.

3. The writer's new house is different from ordinary ones mainly because _______.
     A. it has your favorite music following you
     B. you can make a telephone call anywhere
     C. the writer is able to change his new idea into practice
     D. it has been controlled by computers

4. What is the writer most likely to be according to the passage?
     A. An IT expert
     B. A famous doctor
     C. An idealist

be friendlier, the neighborhood safer, and the area a nicer place to live in. 'There are some suggestions to
develop a good relationship with your neighbors.
Whether you're new in the neighborhood or new residents who have just moved into your block,
introduce yourself. Say hello, offer a welcoming gift and share or ask about the local area.
Sometimes, you can remedy (補(bǔ)救) problems before they even start; for example, if you do a lot of yard work, let them know in advance and mention that if it's getting too loud, they shouldn't hesitate to let you
know.
Be aware of the shared walls, if you and your neighbors share adjacent (相鄰的) living spaces. and
try to put noisy household appliances such as washing machines and tumble dryers away from the shared walls.
Keep your pet dog on a leash (皮帶) if it has a habit of running rampant on your neighbors' lawns,
especially if they have a pet cat or a pet dog of their own, and ensure to clean up after it.
When you park your vehicle, be sure not to block anyone's access, or make them have to pull out of
a very tight spot. Don't slam (砰地關(guān)上) your car doors late at night.
Weed your garden in a regular way, because the presence of weeds in your yard is not only unsightly

There are many rights to make sure that people will be treated fairly when they are suspected
or accused of a crime. Sometimes these rights are called "due process of law". In using these rights,
a person should have the help of a lawyer.
You have a right to protect against unreasonable searches and seizures. The police generally
may not search you or your home, or take things you own, without a "warrant". A warrant is a
paper which states, very exactly , the place to be searched and the things to be taken. Sometimes,
however, the police will not need a warrant to search you or your property. If an officer sees you
committing a crime, or if he has a good reason to believe you have committed a serious crime, he
may arrest you and search you and the area right around you without a warrant.
If you invite a police without a warrant to come into your house and he finds proof of crime,
the evidence may be used against you in court. If you do not want an officer to search you or your
home and he does not have a warrant, tell him that you do not give him the right to search. However,
if the officer will not listen, do not try to stop him. It is dangerous to resist and it may be illegal to do
so. Any evidence which a policeman gets during an unlawful search and seizure cannot be used against
you.
Police officers must act reasonably and fairly at all times. They should use physical force only when
it is needed to arrest someone to enforce a law. They may not use physical violence to "teach someone
a lesson".

1.According to the passage, a "warrant" is______.
A. an identification card
B. an access card
C. an official written order
D. a special license
2.In which case can the policeman use the evidence he gets against you in court?
A. He makes an unreasonable search of your home and gets the evidence.
B. He is allowed to search your home with no warrant and finds proof of crime.
C. He gets the information you do not want to give him by using physical force.
D. He obtains the information from you when you are alone with him
3. The police can use physical force only when____.

B. they catch the criminal on the spot

means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or
unconsciously. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does
not give it enough opportunity to become strong.  2   . One of them exercises his arms and legs

I used to be tile messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error,
I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of
all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions
of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn't work, you have way two and way three to
lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It's just a matter of being organized.
Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of
those ways doesn't work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will
show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results
obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be
sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for yourself.
Don't try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you and
make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by
sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone
around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even
money.
So, don't be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills
necessary to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and
manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

A "blogger" is a person who writes on an Internet computer Web site called a "blog". The word "blog"
is a short way of saying web log, or personal Web site. Anyone can start a blog, and they can write about anything they like.
There are millions of blogs on the Internet today. They provide news, information and ideas to many
people who read them. They contain links to other Web sites. And they provide a place for people to
write their ideas and react to the ideas of others.
A research company called Perseus has studied more than 3,000 Web logs. It says that blogs are
most popular with teenage girls. They use them to let their friends know what is happening in their lives.
The study also says that more than 100,000 bloggers stopped taking part in the activity after a year.
However, some people develop serious blogs to present political and other ideas. For example, the
Republican and Democratic parties in the southern state of Kentucky recently started their own blogs.
And American companies are beginning to use blogs to advertise their products.
At the same time, some long-standing blogs have ended. Last week, blogging leader Dave Winer
closed his free blog service, weblogs.com. He says the site became too costly to continue. He started the
blog four years ago, and thousands of people had written on it.
One blog that is still going strong is called Rebecca's Pocket. It involves much useful information for
readers. Rebecca Blood created the Web site in 1999. She wrote about the history of blogs on the site.

Being able to multitask-doing several things at the same time-is considered a welcome skill by
most people. But if we consider the situation of the young people aged from eight to eighteen, we should
think again.
What we often see nowadays is that young people juggle an ever larger number of electronic devices
as they study. While working, they also surf on the Internet, send out emails, answer the telephone and
listen to music on their iPods. In a sense, they are spending a significant amount of time in fruitless efforts
as they multitask.
Multitasking is even changing the relationship between family members. As young people give so
much attention to their own worlds, they seem to have no time to spend with the other people around
them. They can no longer greet family members when they enter the house, nor can they eat at the family
table.
Multitasking also affects young people's performance at university and in the workplace. When asked
about their opinion of the effect of modern gadgets on their performance of tasks, many young people
gave a positive response. However, the response from the worlds of education and business was not
quite as positive.
Educators feel that multitasking by children has a serious effect on later develop-ment of study skills.
They believe that many college students now need help to improve their study skills. Similarly, employers
feel that young people entering the job market need to be taught all over again, as modern gadgets have
made it unnecessary for them to learn special skills to do their work.

1. What does the underlined word "juggle" in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Want to buy.
B. Take the place of.
C. Use at the same time.
D. Seek for information from.

2. In Paragraph 3, the author points out that  ________.
A. family members do not eat at the family table.
B. family members do not greet each other.
C. young people live happily in their families
D. young people seldom talk with their family members

3. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. multitasking is harmful to young people's development.
B. Young people benefit a lot from modern gadgets.
C. Multitasking is an important skill to young people.
D. Yong people must learn skills for future jobs.

4. The author develops the passage mainly by ________.
A. providing typical examples
B. following the natural time order
C. comparing opinions from different fields
D. presenting a cause and analyzing its effects
