Although there are many ways in which people communicate through speech, public speaking has
probably received more study and attracted more attention than any other. Politicians winning an
election, salespeople presenting products and etc. All depend upon this form of public communication.
Even people who do not make speaking a part of their daily work are often asked to make public
speeches: students at graduation, for instance, or members of churches, clubs or other organizations.
Nearly everyone speaks in public at some time or other, and those who perform the task well often
become leaders.
There are many reasons for speaking in public. A public speaker may hope to teach an audience
about new ideas, or provide information about some topic. Creating a good feeling or entertaining an
audience may be another purpose.  Public speakers, however, most often seek to persuade an audience
to accept new opinions, to take certain actions, or to see the world in a new way.
Public speakers usually know well in advance when they are scheduled to make a speech.
Consequently, they are able to prepare their message before they deliver it.  Sometimes, though,
speakers must deliver the message unprepared, or off the cuff, such as when they are asked to speak
at a wedding reception or to participate in an interview.
When they do not have to speak unprepared, most speakers write their own speeches. Politicians
and business managers sometimes employ professional writers who prepare their speeches for them.
These professional writers may work alone or in small teams. Although the speaker may have some
ideas into the contents of the speech, the writers sometimes have a great influence over the opinions
expressed by their employers. Regardless of how a speech is prepared, the person who delivers it is
given credit for its effect upon its hearers.

Most drinks stating that they are fruitflavored (水果味道的) contain no fruit at all, while most of the
rest contain only a small quantity of fruit, according to a study carried by the British Food Commission.
"Shoppers need to check the labels (標(biāo)簽) before buying drinks, though sometimes the actual content
can be nonexistent," said Food Commission spokesperson Ian Tokelove. "Food production is highly
competitive. __1__ It will increase profits, and consumers won't always realize they are being tricked."
Flavorings are focused on the flavors of natural food products such as fruits, meats and vegetables,
or creating flavor for food products that do not have the desired flavors. Researchers analyzed the
contents of 28 strawberryflavored products sold in stores.    __2__  Of the 11 products that did contain
strawberries, five of them contained less than one percent real fruit. In addition, each juice box
contained nearly eight teaspoons of sugar.
__3__  Let's take jam as an example. Some strawberryflavored jam was labeled as containing no
artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners, but it contained absolutely no strawberries at all.
__4__  Consumers have the rights to know clearly about what they have bought. Under current
UK law, food packages do not have to distinguish between natural and artificial flavoring. "Describing
a product as strawberry flavor and covering the surface of the packet with pictures of strawberries is
misleading.   __ 5   Unfortunately, it is also legal and widespread," Tokelove said. "It's time to take
measures to protect the consumers' rights."
A. The products which contain real fruit are popular with people.
B. Even products advertised as more natural often contained no fruit.
C. They found that about 60 percent of them didn't contain any fruit at all.
D. If companies can cut their costs by using flavoring, they are likely to do so.
E. It is important and necessary to demand a small amount of flavoring in the products.
F. Actually the product contains just a tiny percentage of strawberry or even no fruit at all.
G. The Food Commission suggested all flavors used in a product should be listed on the packaging.

Deciding what to watch on TV is a battle of wills that is fought in homes all over the world.
According to psychologists (心理學(xué)家), it is much more serious than simply deciding between
a soap opera and a sports program, or between pop music and politics. This television conflict
is part of a bigger power game which goes on in homes, even though most of the players do not
realize that they are playing a game at all.  "It's such a game as is not easy to notice," says
psychologist Dr David Lewis, "that many people don't even know they're playing it."
Unconsciously, people begin to play the game as soon as they meet their future husband or
wife. By the time the couple get married, the rules of game are already formed. The big decision,
like where to live and which school to send the children to, are usually joint decision. When it
comes to less important things, it's a different matter. Here is just one example of this process at
work. A husband looks through a pile of holiday brochures (小冊子) and announces his preference:
"The South of France". And his wife quickly agrees before he realizes that the only brochures she
gave him were those for the South of France. Similarly, she may decide on how the home should
be decorated, but he chooses the new car and decides what the family does at weekends.
"Family power struggles are interesting," says Dr Lewis. "Of course, some people are naturally
more dominant (占支配地位的) than others, and the most dominant personality in a family tries
to lead. These days, even though so many couples make a special effort to have a true and equal
partnership, men generally have a greater need to appear to be in physical control. Women, on
the other hand, are not so interested in physical control as in emotional control.  On the whole,
they're more controlling and can make the man think of something as his idea in the first place."
1. What is the psychologists' opinion about choosing a TV program at home?
A. It's likely to cause family quarrels.
B. It's an interesting game a family likes to play.
C. It's difficult to choose with so many programs.
D. It's a matter of power in a family.
2. According to the passage, which decision is made by the couple together?
A. How to decorate their home.
B. Where to settle down.
C. What kind of car to buy.
D. What to do at weekends.
3. What can we learn about family decisionmaking from the passage?
A. Men have the final say in the family.
B. Men are much better controlled than women.
C. Women are rather skillful in influencing men.
D. Women are emotional about important matters.
4. Which of the following is the main idea of the passage?
A. Why people fight for power at home.
B. Whose finger is on the button at home.
C. How family members play games at home.
D. What decision family members make together.

Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the
way of opportunity for promotion, happiness and security. As a result, they are employed in doing
jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction.
Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they
can earn a living. Some stay long at a job and learn to like it; others leave one for another looking for
something to suit them. The young graduates who leave the university look for jobs that offer a salary
up to their expectation.
Very few go out into the world knowing exactly what they want and realizing their own abilities.
The reason behind all this confusion is that there never has been a proper vocational (職業(yè)的)
guidance in our educational institution. Nearly allfeel their way in the dark. Their chief concern when
they lookfor a job is to ask what salary is like. They never bother tothink whether they are suited for
the job or, even more important, whether the job suits them. Having a job is more thanmerely providing
yourself and your dependants (受贍養(yǎng)者)with daily bread and some money for leisure and
entertainment. It sets a pattern of life and, in many ways, determines social status in life, selection of
friends, leisure and interest.
In choosing a profession you should first consider the type of work which will suit your interest.

D. schools fail to offer students appropriate vocational guidance
3. In the writer's opinion, which of the following statements     is most important?

Parents should stop blaming themselves because there's not a lot they can do about it. I mean the teenager
problem. Whatever you do or however you choose to deal with it, at certain times a wonderful, reasonable and
helpful child will turn into a terrible animal.
I've seen friends deal with it in all kinds of different ways. One strict mother insisted that her son, right
from a child, should stand up whenever anyone entered the room, open doors and shake hands like a gentleman.
I saw him last week when I called round. Sprawling himself (懶散地躺) on the sofa in full length, he made no
attempt to turn off the loud TV he was watching as I walked in, and his greeting was no more than a quick
glance at me. His mother was ashamed. "I don't know what to do with him these days," she said.
"He's forgotten all the manners we taught him." He hasn't forgotten them. He's just decided that he's not
going to use them. She confessed (坦白) that she would like to come up behind him and throw him down from
the sofa onto the floor.
Another good friend of mine let her two daughters climb all over the furniture, reach across the table, stare
at me and say, "I don't like your dress; it's ugly." One of the daughters has recently been driven out of school.
The other has left home.
"Where did we go wrong?" their parents are now very sad. Probably no one is to blame on this issue.
1. This text is most probably written by _____.
A. a specialist in teenager studies
B. a headmaster of a middle school
C. a parent with teenage children
D. a doctor for mental health problems
2. The underlined word "it" in the second paragraph refers to _____.
A. the change from good to bad that's seen in a child
B. the way that parents often blame themselves
C. the opinion that a child has of his parents
D. the advice that parents want their children to follow
3. From the second example we can infer that the parents of the two daughters _____.
A. pay no attention to them
B. are too busy to look after them
C. have come to hate them
D. feel helpless to do much about them
4. What is the writer's opinion about the sudden change in teenage children?
A. Parents have no choice but to try to accept it.
B. Parents should pay still more attention to the change.
C. Parents should work more closely with school teachers.
D. Parents are at fault for the change in their children.

Concern with money, and then more money, in order to buy the conveniences and luxuries of modern
life, has brought great changes to the lives of most Frenchmen. More people are working than ever before
in France. In the cities the traditional leisurely midday meal is disappearing. Offices, shops and factories are
discovering the great efficiency of a short lunch hour in company lunch rooms. In almost all lines of work
emphasis now falls on ever-increasing output. Thus the "typical" Frenchman produces more, earns more,
and buys more consumer goods than his counterpart of only a generation ago. He gains in creature comforts
and ease of life. What he loses to some extent is his sense of personal uniqueness, or individuality.
Some say that France has been Americanized. This is because the United States is a world symbol of the
technological society and its consumer products. The so-called Americanization of France has its critics.
They fear that"assembly-line life" will lead to the disappearance of the pleasures of the more graceful and
leisurely(but less productive)old French style. What will happen, they ask, taste, elegance, and the cultivation
of the good things in life - to joy in the smell of a freshly picked apple, a stroll by the river, or just happy
hours of conversation in a local café?
Since the last 1950's life in France has indeed taken on qualities of rush, tension, and the pursuit of
material gain. Some of the strongest critics of the new way of life are the young, especially university
students. They are concerned with the future, and they fear that France is threatened by the triumph of this
competitive, goods-oriented culture. Occasionally, they have reacted against the trend with considerable
violence.
In spite of the critics, however, countless Frenchmen are committed to keeping France in the forefront
of the modern economic world. They find that the present life brings more rewards, conveniences, and
pleasures than that of the past. They believe that a modern, industrial France is preferable to the old.
1. Which of the following is a feature of the old French way of life?
A. Leisure, elegance, and efficiency.
B. Elegance, efficiency, and taste.
C. Leisure, elegance, and taste.
D. Efficiency, taste, and convenient.
2. Which of the following is NOT true about Frenchmen?
A. Many of them prefer the modern life style.
B. They actually enjoy working at the assembly line.
C. They are more concerned with money than before.
D. They are more competitive than the old generation.
3. The passage suggests that _____.
A. great changes have occurred in the life style of all Frenchmen
B. it's now unlikely to see a Frenchman enjoying a stroll by the river
C. the French are fed up with the smell of freshly picked apples
D. in pursuing material gains the French are suffering losses elsewhere
4. The main idea of the passage is "_____ ".
A. Changes in the French Way of Life
B. Criticism of the New Life Style
C. The Americanization of France
D. Features of the New Way of Life
