A survey was conducted in Shanghai where interviewees were asked if they wanted to be a factory worker. One percent of all peo ple interviewed said: "YES," Wang Hongjun, a technician, said, rai sing his voice for
impressive effect." But I can tell you, only a small part of that I percent are telling the truth."
I've met colorful people like Wang all over China. They are cynical (玩世不恭的 ) yet warmhearted, plain
spoken but smart. And many of them are confined (局限于) to work in factories.
Wang is a top technician but also represents manual factory workers, who are China's most important
natural resource. Their en- ergy is powering China's economic boom, and their muscle is turning the wheel of
the world's factory.
But does their unskilled labor give their life meaning? At school, did they tell their friends:" When I grow up
I want to work in a factory making socks?" Did you?
Factory work has always been a stepping-stone from farm life to the city and a modern life. It's been
happening for centuries, but today, with our space-age technology, it's outdated. Earning 1,200 yuan,( $169)
per month working in a factory is better than that on a farm, but as Wang points out, it's not a dream career.
There should be better ways to earn your rice.
Many modern factories no longer have production line workers. Robots do the assembly (裝配). People
just do the monitoring. In this age of technology, in which China is now working smarter and not just harder,
why are people still standing in production lines?
But life is cheap in China. So why not continue to make use of the low-cost labor situation and keep the
economy growing fast, some entrepreneurs may ask.
But have these businessmen ever labored in a factory?
1. How many people surveyed really like to be factory workers?
A. One percent.
B. Only a small part.
C. Only a small part of that one percent.
D. The writer didn't mention it.
2. Which is NOT the writer's opinion of factory workers?
A. Cynical.
B. Unimportant.
C. Warmhearted.
D. Plain spoken.
3. The writer uses _____ to begin the passage.
A. a lot of figures
B. many examples
C. some dialogue
D. the result of a survey

As if that were not enough, most of us have to fight traffic get- ting there, usually an hour's drive. Then,
when we get to work, we have to fight with unruly co-workers or a nagging boss. And to make matters worse, you have to fight the same traffic going in the oppo site direction just to get back home.

like your life, you probably have a J-O-B. You know what J-O-B stands for? Just Over Broke, that's what!
With a job, most Americans are living pay- check-to-paycheck and hating every minute of it. I know because

On the first day of my new high school, I almost had a nervous breakdown. Everything about the school
seemed so difficult. When I got home, my parents said, "You're nervous and that's okay. Everyone is afraid
of high school." I denied it. I wanted to be strong, so I refused to let anyone know about my fear, even my
closest friends.
On the first day I was late for every class and was constantly lost. The school seemed like a puzzle that I
couldn't figure out. Was this how the whole year was going to be? I didn't think I could rise to this challenge,
especially carrying a huge backpack that I could hardly lift. It was so big that I could knock someone out with
it! The schoolmates seemed to regard me as a fool, and they were probably right.
Despite my fears, after the first week I finally had my schedule figured out. With the exception of falling up
and down the stairs a couple of times and getting laughed at, high school was turning out to be not so bad. It
was actually much better than middle school and much more challenging.
Since then, I've been elected vice president of my class, which wasn't much of a victory since only three
people ran for the four positions.
It is normal to be scared about a new school. Take a deep breath and relax. High school is something that
any student can overcome. Make sure you participate in some out-of-class activities because you'll find it easier
to make friends. Try to do your best, even if it isn't straight A's.
Most important of all, be who you are, whether you're a "fool", an athlete, or a lower grader. Don't try to
pretend to be someone you're not. Now you know the true secrets of high school.
1. The main reason for the author's fear on his first day is that _____.
[     ]
A. he was unable to work out the puzzle
B. his schoolmates were unfriendly to him
C. he was not familiar with the new surroundings
D. his schoolbag was too heavy for him to carry
2. From the author's first day experience we can infer that _____.
[     ]
A his home was far from the school
B. he got to school after classes began
C. he didn't get any school schedule
D. he didn't know the right way to class
3. After his first week at school, the author _____.
[     ]
A. was still not accustomed to the schedule
B. gradually adjusted himself to the new school
C. found high school not so challenging as he had imagined
D. ran for president of his class against three other students
4. According to the passage, the secret of the author's success lies mainly in _____.
[     ]
A. making more friends
B. getting more A's at school
C. being who he really is
D. joining in out-of-class activities

A. Do established musicians have a responsibility to guide and assist young up-and-coming musicians?
B. Did anyone promote your musical education when you were growing up?
C. What kind of "world music" do you enjoy?
D. What's your comment on pop music?
E. Does the contemporary music press give jazz the coverage it deserves?
F. What's wrong with the music on the radio?
An interview with Wynton Marsalis, a noted jazz musician
1_____
There were the older jazz musicians who hung around our house when I was young. I saw how much
they practiced, how serious they were about their art. I knew then I had to work just as hard if I wanted
to succeed. Of course, my father inspired me a lot, and many teachers took the time to nurture my talent
and the talents of other students in our school.
2_____
Yes. We've done such a poor job with music education because, as a society, we haven't maintained the
kind of education that a true artist and musician needs. Young people haven't been able to equate romance
and talent with music. For instance, most of the people who make it in the music industry today have to
look good. How they sound is secondary. Sarah Vaughan, Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald-those big, romantic
queens of jazz music wouldn't make it in today's music industry, and that's a shame. We need to teach young
people about the alternatives.
3_____
Around the world people make music that, if you listen carefully to it, sounds a little like the cadence of
their language. I'd call it folk music. When I'm away from home, I make a point of listening to regional folk
music, not what' on the radio.
4_____
The same music is on the radio all over the world, and the American sound is overwhelming. Even the
pop music that's produced and created in foreign countries has that American beat, that underscore of funk.
As a musician, I'm not interested in hearing recycled versions of the same genre over and over. Any music
that doesn't have a development section just isn't interesting to me.
5_____
The music press has so much to introduce these days, and jazz is just a small fraction of it. Because some
people are intimidated by jazz, they don't cover it unless it's a big name. New jazz musicians don't get much
of break. A lot of editors don't say anything about jazz these days unless it's Marsalis. That's a shame. What
VH1 is doing with their Save the Music campaign is phenomenal. They're getting all these instruments out
to needy kids. It's the kind of thing all networks should be doing.

You either have it, or you don't- a sense of direction, that is. But why is it that some people could find their
way across the Sahara without a map, while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we're all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One
theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being
carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don't use it, we lose it.
"Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around. Says Jim Martland, Research Director of the project." However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop
the skills."
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of
direction. He makes the following suggestions:
If you are using a map, turn it so it relates to the way you are facing.
If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree. Note landmarks on
the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
Simplify the way of finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town. Streams, or walls in the
countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks
such as tower blocks or hills which can help to find out where you are. Now you need never get lost again!
