                                                                  Rainy Day Fun
You wake up and the weather is all wet. What are you going to do today? Here are four ideas for you
to try when it's raining cats and dogs.
     Puppet (木偶) show
You can create your own puppets with things your parents already have around the house. First, you'll
need some old socks or brown paper bags. Then get them decorated. Give your puppets names and funny
voices. You might want to make up a special story for them. Maybe one puppet lost his way home. Maybe
another puppet has superman powers. To make your show even better, use a cardboard box as a stage.
Build a castle Ask your parents for some old sheets, blankets, or comforters. Spread them over chairs or
other furniture to create a top-secret castle. Bring a flashlight, a good book to read, and maybe even a snack.
     Dress-up time
Both boys and girls can have fun trying on old clothes. Ask your parents to let you try on old hats,
jewelry, shoes, and clothes. Do you want to be a doctor? You can pretend it in a doctor coat. Or maybe you
see yourself as a movie star. Ask your mom for her old dance dresses. Don't forget the earrings and high
heels!
     Say thanks
Birthdays and holidays are chances for us to thank people who love us. But it can be a special treat to
get a gift or a card on an ordinary day. Think of the people who make you happy and then come up with
a way to show them your care. Use your arts and craft supplies to create a special card. Or ask your
parents to help you make cookies as a gift for that special person. You will be delivering sunshine on a
rainy day!
1. According to the passage, these activities can happen on ______.
A. sunny days
B. rainy days
C. cloudy days
D. windy days
2. When working on the puppet show, children can ______.
A. train their own imagination
B. learn to perform shows on stage
C. know how to deal with others
D. find new ways of creating puppets
3. Which of the following words can be used to describe the kids' castle?
A. Boring
B. Hot
C. Quiet
D. Noisy
4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. You can pretend to be a doctor by trying on your parent's clothes.
B. You can only give a gift or a card to show your care on birthdays or holidays.
C. You can use your own dance dresses to dress up.
D. You can make some gifts to show your care for special persons.

What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school
subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at
mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at
office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may
not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not
all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not
required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts
and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your
work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If
you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else,
you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers.
You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become
interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle
tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness
than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an
important part of your background. You should not be apologetic(認(rèn)錯的) about it but instead recognize that
you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
1. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The importance of working hard at school.
B. Choosing a career according to one's strengths.
C. How to face one's weakness.
D. The value of school work.
2. The writer thinks that a student have a part-time job is probably _____.
A. a good way to find out his weak points
B. one of the best ways of earning extra money
C. of great use for his work in the future
D. a waste of time he could have spent on study
3. From the passage we learn that if a student's school performance is not good, he _____.
A. should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities
B. will be regretful about his bad results
C. may also do well in his future work
D. should restart his study in school
4. The underlined phrase "be all thumbs" (in para 3) probably means"_____".
A. be clumsy at doing things
B. be skillful in doing things
C. be not interested in certain things
D. be easily bored in doing things

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and
other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways
in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. The pleasant parts of
conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the
cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they
are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend(hurt)many people,
and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy
persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing (批評) and being disliked is perhaps taken
up by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may
be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning
may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep
sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with
more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them
into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them
success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public
objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should
change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves
and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact (接觸) with them. Otherwise, it can
be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
1. The phrase "sour the pleasure of society" most nearly means ______.
A. have a good taste with social life
B. make others unhappy
C. tend to scold others openly
D. enjoy the pleasure of life
2. We can conclude from the passage that ______.
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
3. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should ______.
A. prevent any communication with them
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes

A. Don't be afraid of risks.
B. Find ways to solve problems.
C. Learn from successful people.
D. Don't give up easily.
E. Know the meaning of success. Enjoy facing your failure.
1. (     )
You cannot have success if you don't know what it means to you. Set clear goals and be realistic. Your
standards should be specific or else you will spend your entire time chasing after a vague goal. For example,
you want to be good at your job. However, this is not a specific goal. Instead, specify this goal as: "My goal
is to only be late for work five times per year, at the most." This is a specific goal that when achieved, give
you a sense of satisfaction and completion, making you feel successful and confident.
2. (     )
Look around-who has the success that you envision (想象) for yourself? What are they doing? How do
they approach a successful life? Become their students. Ask them for advice. Spend time around them, if you
can. Learn from them. They will bring you much useful experience.
3. (     )
Successful people think big and act big. It can be scary to do, but if you don't, then how will you ever be
successful? Don't wait for opportunities. Dig them out. Successful people make big investments (in their
careers, in their business, in their education) and all investments involve some degree of risk. Study your
risks, and be brave.
4. (     )
People who are successful like solving problems and answering questions. No matter where you are or
what you are doing, look around and try to think of ways you can find, for example, what are people
struggling with or complaining about? How can you make life easier for them in an effective way? Can you
redesign or reorganize some aspects of the situation so that things can run more smoothly?
5. (     )
You should learn to persist. It is also the key factor to success. When asked about his 10,000 failed
attempts to develop a storage battery, the prolific (多產(chǎn)的) American inventor Thomas Edison replied: "I
have not failed; I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. So, if your first attempt didn't work, don't
quit and don't give up."

Dear Abby,
I am a very conservative woman. I don't drink, dance, wear makeups or pants. I enjoy the company of
friends despite (盡管) our differences and thought they enjoyed mine.
On our most recent outing, however, they laughed at my religious jewelry, commented on my "lack of
fashion," and made me feel guilty for not wanting to stay out late.
Despite this, they are great friends and would help me at the drop of a hat. I don't bring up their being
overweight, or that I think some of the clothes they wear are ugly. I don't criticize them for sleeping around.
I wish they would accept me for who I am.
I am considering not going out with them the next time they ask, but I don't really want it to come to that.
Any suggestions?

Dear Old-Fashioned Girl,
Just this: It's time for you to start cultivating relationships with people whose values are more like your
own. The friends you have described may be lovely, but their comments were out of line and folks are known
by the company they keep. If you spend a lot of time with the women you have described, people will begin
to make assumptions (臆斷) about you.

A. Suggestions on having interviews.
B. Be yourself.
C. Listen before talking.
D. Use your eyes and smile.
E. Forcus your energy.
F. Qualities pf good communication.
1. (     )
Good communication is vital in modern society. We know that much of the communication is unspoken.
Consciously or unconsciously, we show our true feelings with our eyes, faces, bodies and attitudes. Your
good qualities can make good communication. The personal qualities include physical appearance, energy, rate
of speech, pitch and tone of voice, gestures, expressiveness of eyes, and the ability to hold the interest of
others. What should we do so that our communication will be effective? Here are my suggestions.
2. (     )
Firstly, the trick is to be consistently you, at your best. The most effective people never change character
from one situation to another. They're the same whether they're having a conversation with their close friends,
addressing their garden club or being interviewed for a job. They communicate with their whole being.
3. (     )
Secondly, whether you're talking to one person or one hundred, always remember to look at them. Don't
break eye contact while talking. As you enter a room, move your eyes comfortably, then look directly at those
in the room and smile. This shows clearly that you are at ease. Smiling is important. The best type of smile and
eye contact is gentle and comfortable, not forced.
4. (     )
You should also absorb other people before showing yourself. You can't learn anything when you talk.
When you attend a meeting, a party or an interview, don't immediately start throwing your opinions. Stop for
a second. Absorb what's going on. What's the mood of the others - are they down, up, happy, expectant? Are
they eager to learn from you, or do they show resistance? If you can sense what's happening with others, you
will be better able to reach them. So, listen before you talk.
5. (     )
How do you get your energy up? Before the meeting, collect your thoughts about the goal of the
meeting-yours and the other's. Once you go through the doorway, no longer think about yourself. Focus on
the person you are meeting to find out what he is interested in. Properly collected energy comes across when
we sincerely believe something. When you speak with energy, you are involved with your audience and your
message. You create an air of certainty. The audience may disagree with you, but they can't question your
belief.

How many times have you heard the expression that most people spend more time planning their vacation
than they do planning their lives? I would expand that expression by adding that most people spend more time
"thinking" about their vacation than they do thinking about what's important in their life.
While rest and relaxation are a must in living a balanced life, it's not what we were created to do. After all,
the Master Creator took his R&R (Rest and Recreation) on the seventh day, only after six days of"definitely
directed thought."
Wallace D. Wattles, wrote "There is no labor from which most people shrink (退縮) as they do from that
of sustained and consecutive thought; it is the hardest work in the world." And yet it is the first and primary
labor of achievement.
My friend Mike Litman wrote an outstanding article this week. It's called "The Millionaire Composite" and
it analyzes one of the big differences between super-successful people and everyone else. He writes"I recently
visited a Real Estate Multi Millionaire Mogul. What did I see next to his desk? His vision statement, along with
a list of what he values in life - hand written.
"A few months back, I interviewed an individual who has sold over a billion dollars worth of products on
television. He told me that he reads his life and business vision and goals daily, and that he takes time to
visualize (使看的見) exactly what he wants to create each night before falling asleep."
What is your life's purpose or your personal mission statement? Is it written down? Do you review it and
think about it often? Is your life organized around your purpose and a set of goals that support that purpose?
Without purpose and goals-definitely directed thought-you are like the proverbial "ship without a rudder
(舵)." There is power in your purpose and in your goals. It is the power that takes you over obstacles, the
fuel that propels (驅(qū)使) you toward the life you envision.
1. As is known to us all, _____ are a necessity in living a balanced life.
A. wealth and relaxation
B. health and wealth
C. work and rest
D. rest and relaxation
2. In the article The Millionaire Composite, ______.
A. the writer's friend is a millionaire
B. the permanent and continuous thought makes the writer's friend shrink
C. the writer's friend analyzes one of the big differences between super-successful people and everyone else
D. the writer's friend advises us to think over our work all the time
3. The underlined word it in paragraph 3 refers to ______.
A. an outstanding article
B. the permanent and continuous thought
C. the physical labor
D. a good plan
4. The writer wrote the passage mainly to tell us that ______.

A. Why to turn to alternative energy?
B. How to use renewable energy?
C. The sources of renewable energy
D. What is renewable energy?
E. Where is the solar energy from?
F. The advantages of renewable energy.
1. (     )
When speaking about renewable energy, we are talking about power which gets its energy from resources
which will not be diminished from the use. Renewable energy is a substitute for the non-renewable energy of
fossil fuel.
2. (     )
One fundamental advantage of renewable energy, and environmentalists' favorite reason to promote its use,
is that there are no greenhouse gases or other pollutants that give out as there are with the burning of fossil
fuels. Renewable energy, or solar, water and wind power, are certainly not new although they have received
much attention recently because they will not cause pollution. Environmentally friendly power sources such as
wind, solar and water power have been used in both developing and developed countries for a long time
because they are cheap and clean, but they have yet to be used as a primary source of energy for any big
urban area.
3. (     )
The generation of power from renewable energy sources has become somewhat more common in recent
times as people have increasingly become aware of issues such as climate change due to fossil fuel byproducts
and the political or social worries about nuclear power. There are numerous countries and non-profit,
environmentally conscious organizations that are supporting the use of renewable energy.
4. (     )
The flow of renewable energy has to do with naturally occurring phenomena. Tides, sunlight, wind and
heat are all created by geothermal events and all are sources of energy. Each of these sources of energy has
unique characteristics related to where and how we can use them.
5. (      )
Most technology which transforms renewable energy into power which we can use is solar powered either
directly or indirectly. The atmospheric system of the earth keeps balance so that the heat which spreads out
into space is equal to the amount of radiation received from the sun. The quantity of energy contained in the
atmosphere approximates the earth's climate. The bodies of water of the earth, or its hydrosphere, absorb
much of the radiation which is received from the sun. And much of that absorbed radiation is in the lower
latitudes surrounding the equator.
