People today are becoming increasingly aware that a proper diet is the foundation of good health. If we
don't have a regular diet of proper food, we don't have the fuel to perform at our best. However, some people
think not eating breakfast doesn't matter a lot, though eating it is important. Get the truth behind this common
wrong idea and other meal frequency and timing meals. Change Text Size Bookmark Yahoo! Buzz Del.icio.us
Digg Reddit Facebook StumbleUpon TwitThis javascript:void (0); Will eating breakfast every day help me lose
weight?
Yes, eating the morning meal can actually help you lose pounds. People who have breakfast are less likely
to eat diet-busting (破壞的) junk food and are more likely to exercise later in the day, as studies show. People
who skip breakfast, on the other hand, usually make up the calories before day's end. Researchers found that
78 percent of the men and women included in the National Weight Control Registry - who have maintained an
average weight loss of 66 pounds for more than 5 years - eat breakfast every day. Is"grazing" really healthier
than eating three square meals a day?
No. Eating many small meals throughout the day is probably not better for you than three main meals, the
traditional amounts of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The idea that "grazing" is healthier comes from a
few old studies showing that eating frequent meals throughout the day may burn more fat and lower insulin
(胰島素)levels. But later studies have found no benefit to grazing. It's not healthier than eating three squares,
according to the American Dietetic Association. I've always eaten most of my calories at dinner. If I'm healthy,
is there any reason for us not to keep doing this?
Hard to say. Instinctively, it sounds like a bad idea. Yet"one-mealers" tend to eat less food totally, scientists
say, so your dining habit may actually help you stay tidy and attractive. On the other hand, one small, brief
study by USDA scientists found that eating just one daily meal may cause small increases in blood pressure,
blood sugar, and cholesterol (膽固醇). If your annual blood tests show a rise in any key risk factors for heart
disease or diabetes, it is high time for you to reconsider your meal strategy. Will bedtime snacks make you fat?
No. But that's not permission for you to eat cookies before going to bed every night. Consuming more
calories than you burn through physical activity produces big loose stomachs and weak legs no matter what
time you overeat. A habit of snacking in front of the television every evening will lead to weight gain, but no
more so than having a six-egg pancake for breakfast or conquering a bag of beans with sweet food at your
desk every afternoon. The final word Eat fewer calories than you need in a day and you will lose weight.
Eat breakfast because it will help you control calories better, not because it's a magic meal. Eat the number
of meals that keeps you satisfied and energized. No one plan is best for everyone

Fred Michel is one of 7.2 million Americans who moonlight, or hold more than one job.
Once a week, after his day job as medical director of a mental health center, the 40-year-old psychiatrist
(精神病大夫) heads to a part-time job at a treatment center for young people. Twice a month, he travels three
hours to another teenage treatment center.
Last year, 5.4 percent of the American workforce held second jobs, according to the US Labor Department, and that looks set to increase this year.
Many workers like the safety that moonlighting provides, says Carl Hausamn, the writer of"Moonlighting:
148 Great Ways to Make Money on the Side."
The information from he US Labor Department shows that 40 percent of US moonlighters in 1997 took a
second job to meet household expenses or pay off debts. Others save money or buy some special things.
People also take second jobs with an eye to the future-wanting to try out a new field or gain experience.
Michel started moonlighting when medical systems were unstable(不穩(wěn)定的). He wanted to make sure he
wasn't tied to one system that ended up failing.
Just as the purposes for moonlighting vary, the moonlighters cross all age and racial groups. And they work
in a variety of industries-no longer just service, office and sale jobs.
"Technology just affects your ability to make money," Hausman says."That makes a frequent change in
moonlighting."
As its name means, moonlighting still occurs mostly at night. And that results in some pressures. Chief
among them is time.
Full-time employers could misunderstand, too. Some companies do not allow after-hour work because
they fear it will affect their employees' 9-to-5 performance.
"The primary employer is saying, 'Wait, I'm paying you for the sharp, fresh, energetic you,'" says Tom
Gimbel, president and founder of LaSalle Staffing in Chicago."If you're burning yourself at both ends, It's
going to show."
Still, the good done to the moonlighters can be great. Besides extra income, moonlighters enjoy variety,
freedom and chance to do something new. They also may find their part-time jobs strengthen what they do
full time.
Besides, "it's fun," Michel says. Not only do this part-time jobs offer a chance to network, stretch his
professional skills and make more money, but they also give him the variety he wouldn't find just in a full-time
job. "It's a way of pulling from the spice cabinet," he says,"and offering a little variety throughout the day."
1. What is the article mainly about?
A.  The ways of moonlighting.
B. The reasons for moonlighting.
C.  The problems with moonlighting.
D. The kinds of people who moonlight.
2. The reason why Fred Michel began to moonlight is that ____.
A. he found it exciting to do a part-time job
B. he needed to make ends meet with more money
C. he feared he would lose his present job one day
D.  he felt more and more pressure from his employer
3. Some companies don't allow their workers to moonlight because they are afraid ___.
A. their workers can not do extra-hour work for them
B. their workers will be too tired to try their best at work
C. their workers will one day turn to some other different jobs
D.  their workers will not get to work and be off work on time
4. The underlined sentence "It's a way to of pulling from the spice cabinet." In the last paragraph means___.
D. moonlighting gets you away from the job you don't enjoy
D. moonlighting offers you freedom to make extra money
D.  moonlighting strengthens your professional skills
D. moonlighting brings you chances to do something different

Dolphins and sharks are showing up in surprisingly shallow water just off the Florida coast. Mullets, crabs,
rays and small fish gather by the thousands off an Alabama pier. Birds covered in oil are crawling deep into
marshes (沼澤), never to be seen again.
Marine scientists studying the effects of the BP disaster (英國石油公司漏油事件) are seeing some strange
phenomena. Fish and other wildlife seem to be fleeing the oil out in the Gulf and clustering in cleaner waters
along the coast in a trend that some researchers see as a potentially troubling sign. The animals' presence close
to shore means their usual habitat is badly polluted, and the crowding could result in mass die-offs as fish run
out of oxygen. Also, the animals could easily be captured by their enemies.
The nearly two-month-old spill (漏油) has created an environmental disaster in US history as tens of millions
of gallons have flown into the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. Scientists are seeing some unusual things as they try
to understand the effects on thousands of species of marine life.
For nearly four hours Monday, a three-person crew with Greenpeace cruised past delicate islands and
mangrove-dotted inlets in Barataria Bay off southern Louisiana. They saw dolphins by the dozen frolicking (嬉
戲) in the oily sheen (光澤) and oil-tinged pelicans feeding their young. But they spotted no dead animals.
"I think part of the reason why we're not seeing more yet is that the impacts of this crisis are really just
beginning," Greenpeace marine biologist John Hocevar said.
The counting of dead wildlife in the Gulf is more than an academic exercise; the deaths will help determine
how much BP pays in damages.

1. What does the marine life react to the BP disaster?
A. Birds crawl deep into caves.
B. Dolphins and sharks show up in deep water.
C. Tens of thousands of marine animals are found dead.
D. Sea creatures flee from the spilled oil, gathering near the seashore.
2. The environmental disaster was caused by ____.
A. the damage of the Mexico Gulf ecosystem
B. the lack of environmental sense of BP
C. the nearly two-month-old oil spill
D. the crowding marine life
3. What is John Hocevar's attitude towards the disaster?
A. Worried.
B. Disappointed.
C. Depressed.
D. Optimistic.
4. From the passage, we can infer that ____.
A. BP will pay much money according to the number of the dead wildlife there
B. marine scientists have seen some strange phenomena
C. the disaster has little influence on dolphins
D. a three-person crew reached no conclusion

1   If not, and if right now you're not focusing on this article, your time might be better spent on a short
nap (小睡) to boost (促進) your focus and productivity (效率).
That's what the National Sleep Foundation says, and it's a message that health education professionals at
the University of California at Davis (a city of California, America) have been spreading to their students.
"We're familiar with the benefits of sleep," said Amelia, a student in sleep and stress at the UC Davis health
center.   2   For students, the benefits of increased productivity and focus will help their scores-even though
there is no data to back that up.
However, research has repeatedly shown that when students have 7-9 hours of sleep, 20-30 minute naps
do offer these benefits,   3
So Jason B. Spitzer, a health educator, believes encouraging students to take naps to improve their state of
mind-not to mention stay awake during classes - is very important.
Health educators discovered that while 33 percent of Davis students didn't nap at all, three-quarters of those who did nap did so for too long-more than 30 minutes. That told the educators that a napping campaign would
have to focus on two different populations:   4   Health educators hand out "nap tools"; they include earplugs
(耳塞), an eye mask and a tip card with directions to more messages online. They advertise in the student
newspaper introducing napping tips and benefits, and they team with the student government to spread the
word on napping during National Sleep Awareness Week.
5   "We want to improve their napping and their sleep quality." Spitzer said.

A. Did you get a complete and restful night's sleep last night?
B. non-nappers and long nappers.
C. The Davis campaign is still changing every year.
D."We're not familiar with the positive effects of napping."
E. We should try our best to nap when it is necessary.
F. Napping is very important to us.

We can all contribute to a greener world. Just follow these ten golden rules:
●Stop getting junk mail. Billions of junk mail can be sent every year. Half of it is never opened Get-your
name off mailing lists. If 100,000 people stopped getting junk mail today, it would save 150,000 trees a year
●Stop reading newspapers. All over the world, millions of newspapers are thrown away every day,44
million newspapers in the USA alone-that's half amillion trees a week. Either recycle your newspapers or read
the news online.
●Buy clothes made from organic materials. Conventional cotton farming seriously pollutes the environment, most of which uses chemical pesticides (農(nóng)藥) and fertilizers. Organic is better!
●Switch to solar energy. In one day, the sun will provide enough energy to power the planet. Why aren't
we using it?
●If you have to drive, share the ride. Most cars in the USA have only one occupant. Also, 25 percent of car
rides are less than 1.5 kilometres. Get out and walk!
●Unplug your PC, TV and VCR. Simply turning them off isn't enough Sets left on standby are still using 25
percent of their power.
●Hold on to your balloons. Helium-filled balloons which fly away usually end up in a lake or river, where
they can choke aquatic (水生的)creatures. Save your balloons and use them again. Or better still, don't use
them at all.
●Feed the birds. Wild birds need food, especially in winter when other sources can be scarce. The greater
the range of foodstuffs you put out for them, the more types of birds you will attract.
●Plant a garden at your school. Learn the connection between the land and the table. Plant vegetables to eat,
flowers to admire and trees to improve the air.

[1] Teenagers who spend hours in front of the television may have a poorer diet, a new study shows. It is
not clear, researchers say, whether television itself is the reason, but it is possible that things like snacking in
front of the TV or seeing ads for junk food influence young people's diets.
[2] The study included nearly 1,400 high school students. It showed that those who watched TV for five
hours or more every day had less healthy diets than other students five years later. As a group, they ate fewer
fruits and vegetables, but ate more fast food, snack products and fried foods.

Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life. Relationships with family, friends, neighbours, even pets, will all help, but the biggest longevity (長壽) seems to come from marriage. The effect was first
noticed in 1858 by William Farr, who wrote that widows (寡婦) and widowers (鰥夫) were at a much higher
risk of dying than the married people. Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven
years to a man's life and two to a woman's. The effect can be seen in all causes of death, whether illness,
accident or self-harm.
Even if the chances are all against you, marriage can more than compensate (補償) you. Linda Waite of the
University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years
longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart. Similarly, a married man who smokes more than a pack a
day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke. There's a flip side, however, as partners are
more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their husband or wife's death, and caring for
your husband or wife with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems. Even so, the
chances favour marriage. In a 30-year study of more than 10,000 people, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard
Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects.
So how does it work? The effects are complicated, affected by socio-economic factors, health-service
provision, emotional support and other more physiological mechanisms (生理機制). For example, social contact can promote development of the brain and immune (免疫) system, leading to better health and less chance of
depression later in life. People in supportive relationships may handle stress better. Then there are the
psychological benefits of a supportive partner.
A life partner, children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100. The overall social
network is still being mapped out, but Christakis says:"People are inter-connected, so their health is
inter-connected."
1. William Farr's study and other studies show that _______.
A. social life provides an effective cure for illness
B. being sociable helps improve one's quality of life
C. women benefit more than men from marriage
D. marriage contributes a great deal to longevity
2. Linda Waite's studies support the idea that _________.
A. older men should quit smoking to stay healthy
B. marriage can help make up for ill health
C. the married are happier than the unmarried
D. unmarried people are likely to suffer in later life
3. It can be inferred from the context that the "flip side" (Para. 2) refers to _________.
A. the disadvantages of being married
B. the emotional problems arising from marriage
C. the responsibility of taking care of one's family
D. the consequence of a broken marriage
4. What does the author say about social networks?
A. They have effects similar to those of a marriage.
B. They help develop people's community spirit.
C. They provide timely support for those in need.
D. They help relieve people of their life's burdens.
5. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. It's important that we develop a social network when young.
B. To stay healthy, one should have a proper social network.
C. Getting a divorce means risking a reduced life span.
D. We should share our social networks with each other.

A new study has revealed that non-smokers who repeatedly breathe in others' tobacco smoke are more
likely to have some degree of hearing loss. Researchers studied a total of 3307 adults aged between 20 and
69. The degree of hearing loss in each ear was assessed by testing the ability to hear pure tones over a range
of frequencies from 500 Hz (low) to 8000 Hz (high).
Men, those who were older, and those with diabetes (糖尿病) were significantly more likely to have high
frequency hearing loss. And this was true of those who were former smokers and those who had never
smoked. But even after taking account of these factors, both former and passive smoking were associated
with damaged hearing.
Former smokers were significantly more likely to have damaged hearing. The prevalence (流行程度) of
low to mid frequency hearing loss among this group was 14 percent. And almost half (over 46 percent) had
high frequency hearing loss. Although the risk was not as strong among those who had never smoked,
almost one in 10 (8.6 percent) had low to mid frequency hearing loss and one in four (26.6 percent) had high
frequency hearing loss.
And the stronger findings among former smokers suggested that continued passive smoking in this group,
even at low levels, could continue the progression of high frequency hearing loss that began when they were
active smokers, say the authors.
"Further research is required to determine whether passive smoking increases the effect of noise exposure
and aging on hearing," they conclude."If this finding is independently confirmed, then hearing loss can b
e added to the growing list of health consequences associated with exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke."
The study was published online in Tobacco Control.
1. Who are most likely to damage their hearing?
A. Those who had never smoked.
B. Former smokers with diabetes.
C. Non-smokers who are older.
D. Teenagers exposed to noise.
2. The author uses figures in Paragraph 3 to ______.
A. explain the hearing test results
B. assess passive smoke exposure
C. indicate the degree of damaged hearing
D. measure the range of hearing frequency
3. According to the last paragraph, passive smoking ______.
A. can only cause hearing loss
B. increases risks of noise exposure
C. weakens the process of aging
D. may do more damage to health
4. What can be inferred from the text?
A. We should try to avoid contact with tobacco smoke.
B. More research on smoking is being carried out.
C. Hearing loss may lead to many social problems.
D. Active smokers are in great need of help.
5. The text is meant to ______.

When you hear the word "recycling", what comes to your mind? The color green or global warming?
What if I were to tell you there is a dark side of recycling? A type of recycling that does more harm than
good. The dark side of recycling has nothing to do with the environment but rather has a lot to do with the
recycling of ideas.
Environmental unrest isn't the only trouble we must face. Idea pollution is quickly becoming widespread
across the online world.
Think about it. When was the last time you read an original blog post? I'm guessing it has been quite a
while. Why do you think top bloggers (博主) of today win so much respect? Do you think they recycle their
ideas? With each recycled idea the online world becomes much more polluted. Used content contributes to the
ever increasing mass of digital smog (煙霧).
The first step to reduce pollution is simple: stop recycling. When you stop recycling, you will then be
forced to take up the task of creating from your own ideas. When you recycle an excellent idea, it soon
becomes good. When you recycle a good idea, it soon becomes just OK. The chain continues until the key part
of what used to make the idea good is saturated (飽和), leaving you nothing but a pile of mess.
In order not to pollute, your ideas must go beyond "just recycled". Your ideas must stand out from the
pollution of the web. For your voice and talent to be heard and seen, you must go far beyond the standard
copy of your neighbors' ideas.
For the next week, make a promise not to recycle. Let your ideas flourish and flow. Believe in your ability
