Valentine’s Day has its origins in the ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia, a yearly festival held on Feb. 15 to help keep dangerous wolves away from townspeople and their crops. On the eve of the festival, Feb. 14, the young women of the town would write their names on small pieces of paper, put them in a jar, and every young man would pick out a name at random. The pair would then be partners for the rest of the festival.
It was 270 B.C. when St. Valentine stood up for love, after Roman Emperor Claudius II forbade Roman soldiers to get engaged or married, believing that married men would rather stay at home than go to war. The priest named Valentine, in defiance(對抗) of Claudius’ orders, secretly married young couples, and on Feb. 14, was punished for his “crime”, thereby becoming the patron saint(守護神) of lovers.
Besides this story, there are some old beliefs about this day:
During the Middle Ages, Europeans believed that birds chose their mates each year on Feb. 14.
Some people used to believe that if a woman saw a robin fly overhead on Valentine’s Day, it meant she would marry a sailor; if she saw a sparrow, she’d marry a millionaire.
If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will know how many children you will have.
And some charming Valentine’s Day Customs.
In Wales, wooden love spoons were carved and given as gifts on Feb. 14.
Heart, keys and keyholes were favorite decorations, which meant “you unlock my heart!”
In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They’d wear these names on their sleeves for one week—hence the term “to wear your heart on your sleeve”.
41.According to the story, Valentine was originally the name of a ________.
A. lover B. priest C. ruler D. feast
42. The Roman emperor forbade soldiers to get married because he thought .

To swim across the English Channel takes at least nine hours. It‘s hard work and it makes you short of breath. To fly over the channel takes only twenty minutes as long as you’re not held up at the airport, but it‘s an expensive way to travel. You can travel by hovercraft (氣墊船)if you don’t mind the noise and that takes forty minutes. Otherwise, you can go by boat, if you remember your sea-sickness pills. All these means of transport have their problems, and the weary(厭煩的)traveler often dreams of being able to drive to France in his own car. “Not possible, you say. Well, wait a minute. People are once again considering the idea of a channel tunnel or bridge.” This time, the great London Council(議會)is looking into the possibility of building a channel link straight to London. A bridge would cost far more than a tunnel, but you would be able to by rail or by car on a bridge, yet a tunnel would provide a rail link only. Why is this idea being discussed again? Is Britain realizing the need for links with Europe as a result of joining EEC? Well, perhaps, the main reason, though, is that a tunnel or bridge would reach the twenty square kilometers of London‘s discussed dockland(船塢)。 A link from London to the continent would stimulate(刺激) trade and revitalize(使重新具有活力)the port, and would make London a main trading center in Europe. With a link over the Channel, you could buy your fish and chips in England and be able to eat them in France while they
are still warm!
1. From the lines we can see that people crossed the Channel by ______ in the past.
A. air B. boat C. Swimming D. A, B, or C
2. The weary traveler thinks the best way to cross the Channel is ______.
A. by swimming B. in his own car C. by air D. by hovercraft
3. A tunnel would cost______ a bridge.
A. far less than B. as much as C. far more than D. as little as
4. According to the passage, a link from London to the continent would be______.
A. necessary for its trade B. important for its politics
C. useful for its industry D. helpful for its culture
5. The main idea of the passage is______.
A. how to develop the trade of London
B. when to cross the Channel
C. how to get to Europe from London more conveniently
D. what to do in the developing of traveling

Reading is a pleasure of the mind, which means that it is a little like a sport: your eagerness and knowledge and quickness make you a good reader. Reading is fun, not because the writer is telling you something, but because it makes your mind work. Your own imagination works along with the author’s or even goes beyond his. Your experience, compared with his, brings you to the same or different conclusions, and your ideas develop, as you understand his.
Reading can only be fun if you expect it to be. If you concentrate on books somebody make you read, you probably won’t have fun. But if you put down a book you don’t like and try another till you find one that means something to you, and then relax with it, you will almost have a good time and if you become, as a result of reading, better, wiser, kinder, or more gentle, you won’t have suffered during the process.
Unfortunately, with TV broadcasting 24 hours a day, many people have lost interest in reading. Whenever they are free and have some leisure time, they turn on the TV and watch whatever is on. It’s a pity that children today have far less interest in books than a TV set.
1、以約30個詞概括短文的要點;
1、 短文可以使用自己的親身經(jīng)歷或虛構(gòu)的故事,也可以參照閱讀材料的篇章結(jié)構(gòu),組織文章,但不得直接引用閱讀材料中的句子;
