It was indeed not easy to get in the touch with everybody and set a well time for all of us. We all enjoyed this precious day greatly, remember the time we spent together and the people they were familiar with. It was a pity which some of us were not present as they had gone to abroad for further studies, but they called back or sent greeting card from different places.

“When one of the doctors criticizes(批評(píng)) me, I get defensive. I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I’m not wrong,” says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction(反應(yīng)) to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.

Try to be objective(客觀的).When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself. “I had put everything I had into making that sale,” Sol says. “And I felt that I had failed as a person.I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure.”

Take time to cool down. Rather than react at once to criticism, take some time to think over what was said. Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person’s position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.

Take positive(積極的) action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be “nothing”. “I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking  them out on me because I was there ,” says Sheila. “His criticisms didn’t really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them.” In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job However, that’s an extreme(極端的) reaction.

You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in-depth(深入的) discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn’t worth fighting this time. The key, in any case , is to have a reasonable plan.

64. When Sol was criticized by his employer, he________.

A. argued bitterly with his employer

B. was angry and gave up his job

C. was sorry for what he did

D. was sad and self-pitying

65. According to the writer, you should take time to think about criticism because ________.

A. people may have a mistaken idea of what you did

B. you should welcome other people’s opinions

C. people may discuss it with you in depth

D. you need time to understand yourself

66. When the writer says that “The best answer may be ‘ nothing’ ”,he means you may

decide _________.

  A. to take no notice of the criticism          B. to argue with your boss

C. you need to change your job             D. you’ve done nothing wrong

67.The writer thinks Sheila might decide to leave her job because her boss______.

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the USA or Australia. They also want their children to take extra courses or activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life.  56 So parents will spend unreasonable amount of money on education.  57

However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills vary. Some children are skilled in some areas while poor in others.  58

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but not teaching them the most important skills: they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life.  59  It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest.he will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up.  60 And that is more important.

A. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is.

B. These activities are teaching a child not only to read a book, but also to think , to use his mind.

C. What most parents fail to realize ,though,is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence.

D. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.

E. The more cost in education, the better the result will be.

F. Cooking demands patience and time.

Soaring divorce rates around the globe are affecting the environment, American researchers suggested in a study released Monday.

Michigan State University researcher Jianguo “Jack” Liu and his assistant Eunice Yu said the increasing number of divorces leads to more households with fewer people and greater consumption of water and energy. They said housing units require space, construction materials and fuel to heat and cool, regardless of the number of inhabitants.

For example, in the United States in 2005, divorced households consumed an extra 73 billion kilowatt hours of electricity and 627 billion gallons of water. An additional 38 million extra rooms required heating and lighting that same year due to divorced households.

“A married household actually uses resources more efficiently than a divorced household”, Liu said. He said that in cohabitating households, people will watch the same television, share the air conditioning and heat and use the same refrigerator, all things that use energy at a regularly stable rate regardless of the number of users.

Liu said he was not condemning divorce, “Some people really need to get divorces.” He said that cohabitation was simply a more environmentally friendly option. Additionally, the researchers noted that trends other than divorce are also changing family living structures, such as the end of multiple generations of a family sharing a home and people remaining single longer.

“People’s first reaction to this research is surprise, and then it seems simple.” Liu said in a release, “But a lot of things become simple after research is done. Our challenges were to connect the dots and quantify their relationships. People have been talking about how to protect the environment and refuse climate change, but divorce is an overlooked factor that needs to be considered.”

He said the increasing energy demands caused by divorce should be considered by governments when they are creating environmental policies.

This passage is mainly meant to ____.

A. inform the reader of the increasing divorce in America

B. emphasize the importance of protecting the environment

C. tell people the effect divorce has on the environment

D. appeal to married people to keep their households

According to the passage, what’s the attitude of Mr. Liu towards divorce?

A. Supportive       B. Objective.       C. Indifferent.       D. Unclear.

It can be inferred from the passage that ____.

A. divorced households will promote the sales of products

B. married households are more willing to protect the environment

C. divorced households contribute more to the society’s development

D. divorce is not taken into account when people are protecting the environment

From this passage we can find that ____.

A. divorce rates are quickly rising globally these years

B. cohabiting households will increase consumption of water and energy

C. to divorce is a wise option according to the passage

D. the end of multi-generations of a family will save energy

Thailand’s giant pandas have finally produced a baby. Chiang Mai zoo director Thanapath said eight-year-old female Lin Hui gave birth to a baby panda weighing about 200 grams.

The pandas, Lin Hui and Chuang Chuang, the zoo’s star residents(居民), had shown no interest in reproducing the traditional way since they both arrived on a 10-year loan from China in 2003. The zoo workers’ effort of artificial insemination(人工授精) worked. The baby panda will officially belong to China but Thailand will raise it for about 24 months, Thanapath said.

Thanapath said Lin Hui is very protective of her child and won’t allow any officials to get close. “She holds the baby very carefully.” he said. “She knows how to be a mother even though she has never been one before.” The baby panda appears to be getting along well with its much larger mother.

The birth appeared on the front pages of many Thai newspapers, which carried photos of the baby which is so tiny that it can be held in the hands of a zoo keeper. Other pictures showed the mother Lin Hui gently holding her baby. Thanapath said, “It is great happiness to see the baby panda. We are so happy that we can breed(繁殖)a panda. Every worker at the zoo is proud and I think every Thai will be proud too.”

Breeding pandas is a common practice in China, where dozens are born each year. But it is a rare thing outside of the country. Giant pandas are among the world’s most endangered animals. Nearly 1,600 pandas are believed to survive in China and about 180 are being raised in zoos worldwide.
