第三部分 完形填空(共20個小題;每小題1分,滿分20分)

Section A

As Christmas is coming, there are presents to be bought, cards to be sent, and rooms to be cleaned. Parents are  41  with difficult jobs of hiding presents from  42  young children. Though children go to bed early, they often lie  43  in bed for a long time, hoping to see Father Christmas.

Last Christmas, my wife and I  44  managed to hide a few large presents in the store room. I was afraid my son, Jimmy, would ask me where the new bike had come from, but  45  he didn’t see it.

On Christmas Eve, it took the children hours to go to sleep. It must have been early  46

when my wife and I went quietly into their room and began  47  stockings. Then I pushed the bike for Jimmy and left it beside the Christmas tree. We knew we would not get much  48  that night, for the children were sure to get up early. At about five o’clock the next morning, we were  49  by loud sounds coming from the children’s room—they shouted excitedly!  50  I had time to get out of bed, Jimmy came riding into our bedroom on his new bike, and his sister, Mary  51  close behind, pushing her new baby carriage (嬰兒車). Even the baby arrived, he moved on his  52  and knees into the room dragging (拖) a large balloon behind him.

C. 寫作部分

 一  閱讀短文,按要求填空(每空不超過3個詞)

Dolphins are not fish; they’re mammals. They are warm-blooded like man and give birth to one baby called a calf at a time. At birth a calf is about 90—130cm long and grows to about 4m. They live up to 40 years. They are highly sociable animals.

Their teeth are interlocking rows of hooks, suitable for holding slippery fish. They eat fish whole starting with head first. When they go wild they keep their mouth open and sometimes keep it nodding to express their aggression. Greater aggression is shown by violent jaw clapping. Dolphins breathe through their blowhole(呼吸孔) located at the top of their head. The dolphin’s eyes produce a special slippery secretion(分泌物) which protects the eyes from foreign objects and water friction.

Dolphins use their powerful tail to move through the water. They also use their tail while hunting. They slap their tail rapidly when they get annoyed or when they want to indicate the sign of danger to alert other dolphins.

The dolphin’s skin is completely smooth allowing the dolphin to move easily through the water, and also reduce heat loss. Their skin may bear rake marks from other dolphin’s teeth during play or mating, and can easily become badly sunburned if they strand(擱淺).

Their bodies are very streamlined so they may swim at high speed through the water, and an

example of this is their ears. Dolphin’s ears are barely noticeable marked only by a small hole just behind the eyes.

While sleeping, it shuts down only half of its brain, as its breathing is under voluntary control. Dolphins take short catnaps, floating just below the surface, and then slowly rising to breathe. Often dolphins are very active during night time, for some this is their main feeding time. Dolphins are able to dive to great depths, and also leap to great heights. They may leap to avoid predators or to show how powerful they are to females at mating time.

Many people have contributed to the Olympic Games. At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the People’s Republic of China returned to the Games after the 32 years of absence. I am sure the whole of China must have felt very proud when Xu Haifeng won the first gold medal for his country. Deng Yaping, who won four Olympic gold medals in 1992 and 1996 and became an IOC member in 2000, is perhaps the greatest female table tennis player the world has ever seen. At the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, Liu Xiang excited people all over Asia when he became the first Asian to win the gold medal in the men’s 110-meet hurdles. Another superstar I would like to mention is Michael Jordan. At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Jordan won his second Olympic gold medal as part of the so-called “Dream Team” of NBA players.

Prague is an ancient European city, featuring one of the most magnificent Old Towns in Europe, along with delicious food, inexpensive shopping and friendly people. Prague is also famous as being home to one of the most famous 20th century writers, Franz Kafka. The famous Czech beer is also one of the reasons to visit Prague.

 PART FOUR  WRITING

  SECTION A

Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information from the passage.

Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

One of the definitions of a symbol is that it is "something that stands for something else. " We can divide symbols into three kinds: the conventional, the accidental, and the universal symbol.

The conventional symbol is the best known in everyday language., The letters t-a-b-1-e stand for the thing "table" we see, touch, and use. But there is no inherent (內(nèi)在的) relationship between the meaning and its letters or sound. The only reason the word symbolizes the thing is the convention of calling this particular thing by a name. After being repeated over and over, the word is accepted in the language.

Besides words, pictures also act as symbols. A flag, for instance, may stand for a specific country, and yet there is no inherent connection between the specific colors and the country for which they stand. It has been accepted after repeated uses.

The opposite to the conventional symbol is the accidental symbol. Supposing that someone has had a saddening experience in a city, he will easily connect the name with a mood of sadness when hearing its name, just as he would connect it with a mood of joy had his experience been a happy one. Obviously, there is nothing in the nature of the city that is either sad or joyful. It is the individual experience connected with the city that makes it a symbol of a mood. The connection between the symbol and the experience symbolized is entirely accidental.

The universal symbol is one in which there is an inherent relationship between the symbol and the symbolized. Take, for instance, the symbol of fire. Fire gives us the impression of power, of energy, and of lightness. When we use fire as a symbol, we describe the inner experience characterized by the same elements the mood of energy, lightness, movement, etc.

The universal symbol is the only one in which the relationship between the symbol and that which is symbolized is not coincidental (巧合的), but inherent. It can be called universal because it is shared by all men, in contrast not only to the accidental symbol, which is entirely personal, but also to the conventional symbol, which is shared by the people of the same convention.
