Chuck was thirteen when he came home from the hospital. He came home not because he was getting better but because he wanted to be with people he knew and loved when he died. I came by the house to visit him and his family several times a week during his treatment. On most of my visits, Chuck was very weak. But the last time I saw him alive, he was awake. “I have got something for you.” He pulled out a piece of crumpled (弄皺的) paper from under his pillow. “I want you to give this to my mom and dad after I die. You’ll know when it’s right, I guess, won’t you?”

“What is it?” I asked. “It’s a list of all the fun we had, and all the happy time when we laughed.” I almost gasped in great surprise.

“Like what?” I asked quietly, trying to regain my calmness.

“Like the time when Mom, Dad, Chrissie, Linda and me were dressed up as fruits and Dad was driving us to a costume party. Dad was a bunch of grapes and I was an apple, and the others were different things like bananas and pears.”

And a policewoman pulled Dad over for speeding. When the policewoman came up to the car, she looked and started laughing so hard that she could hardly stand up. And we all started laughing and she said, “Where are you all heading — a salad bar?” Dad said he was sorry to be speeding, but his kids were getting so ripe(成熟的) that they were starting to draw flies. And she laughed till she had to take off her dark glasses and wiped tears from her eyes.”

Chuck laughed and so did I. The list was full of laughing and fun. What a wonderful gift, I thought.

Why did Chuck go home from the hospital?

A. He had been cured by the doctors.

B. He got better and better.

C. He missed his friends and teachers.

D. He wanted to be with people who he knew and loved when he died.

What did Chuck write on the list?

A. What to do after his death.     B. His thoughts about fear, anger and disappointment.

C. What to do before his death.     D. All the happy time he had with his family.

Why did the policewoman laugh when she looked into the car?

A. Because she mistook the children for fruits.

B. Because she saw some flies around the children.

C. Because she was frightened.

D. Because the children were dressed in a funny way.

There is a boy called Bill in my gym class who has unbearably yellow teeth that almost make everyone feel unpleasant.Recently another boy told Bill that he should "go Ajax" his teeth.Bill was crushed. If the other boy had been thinking, he would have realized that there is a better way to handle such a situation. He could have dealt with it with tact.He could have showed this hurtful truth in a more careful, sensitive way—that's "tact".

If a person isn't sensitive to another's feelings, there is no way he or she can be tactful.Yesterday, my 5-year-old brother proudly announced that he had cleaned the screen on our television set.Unfortunately, he used furniture polish, which produced an oily film on the television screen. My mother smiled arid thanked him for his efforts—and then showed how to clean the screen properly. Her sensitivity enables my brother to keep his self-respect.Yet, sensitivity alone does not make tact.

"Tactfulness" also requires "truthfulness".Doctors, for example must be truthful. If a patient has just been disabled in an accident, a tactful doctor will tell the truth—but express it with sensitivity. The doctor may try to give the patient hope by telling them curing techniques under study or about advanced equipment now available.Doctors must use tact with patients' relatives as well.Instead of bluntly saying, "Your husband is disabled," a doctor might say, "I'm sorry, but your husband has lost feeling in his legs and..."

Tact should not be confused with trickery.Trickery occurs when a nurse is about to give a patient an injection(注射) and says, "This won't hurt a bit." Instead of trickery, the nurse might guarantee the patient that the discomfort of the injection is a small thing compared to the benefits of it.It would also be thoughtful for the nurse to tell the patients about some of these benefits.

Tact is a wonderful skill to have, and tactful people are usually admired and respected.Without tact our society would become an intolerable place to live in.

The underlined word "crushed" in the first paragraph probably means____.

    A.surprised     B.cheated     C.regretful        D.painful

According to the author, his mother's praise for the brother is ____.

A.sensitive and tactful               B.sensitive but not tactful enough

C.truthful but not tactful enough          D.sensitive but trickish

閱讀下面的短文,并根據(jù)短文后面的要求答題(請注意問題后的詞數(shù)要求)。

Safety in the highway is not totally out of hand. Here are four ways you can protect yourselves when you travel.

You are safer in a large car. People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason for the safety problem.

Being thrown into glass and metal parts of a car --- or being thrown from the car --- can really damage you. That’s why safety belts should be worn. The safety belt’s main purpose is _______________________. If your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object or if it rolls over, a belt can reduce the chance of fatal injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.

Air bags are important. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes --- the type of crash that kills the most drivers, though they are also wearing safety belts. Most people demand air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes. Effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.

Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people have realized that mixing drinking and driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are measures to strengthen penalties (處罰) for drinking and driving.
