Now let us look at how we read. When we read a printed text, our eyes move across a page in short, rough movement. We recognize words usually when our eyes are still when they fixate(凝視).Each time they fixate, we see a group of words. This is known as the recognition span or the visual span. The length of time of which the eyes stop ---the duration of the fixation ----varies considerably from person to person. It also varies within one person according to his purpose in reading and his familiarity with the text.Furthermore, it can be affected by such factors as lighting and tiredness.

Unfortunately, in the past, many reading improvement courses have concentrated too much on how our eyes move across the printed page.As a result of this misleading emphasis on the purely visual aspects of reading, numerous exercises have been devised to train the eyes to see more words at one fixation. For instance, in some exercises, words are flashed on to a screen for, say, a tenth or a twentieth of a second. One of the exercises has required students to fix their eyes on some central point, taking in the words on either side.Such word patterns are often constructed in the shape of rather steep pyramids so the reader takes in more and more words at each successive fixation. All these exercises are very clever, but it’s one thing to improve a person’s ability to see words and quite another thing to improve his ability to read a text efficiently.Reading requires the ability to understand the relationship between words.Consequently, for these reasons, many experts have now begun to question the usefulness of eye training, especially since any approach which trains a person to read isolated words and phrases would seem unlikely to help him in reading a continuous text.

    C.demands a deeply-participating mind

       D.demands more mind than eyes

61.What does the author mean by saying the underlined sentence in the second paragraph?

A.The ability to see words is not needed when an efficient reading is conducted.

B.The reading exercises mentioned can’t help to improve both the ability to see and to

Does a drink a day keep heart attacks away? Over the past 20 years, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption, say, one or two beers, glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary heart disease.Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of that theory.More important, the work provided the first solid indication of how alcohol works to protect the heart.

In the study, researchers from Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvad Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attack with those of healthy people of the same age and sex.The scientists found that people who sip one to three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are.The apparent source of the protection: those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high density lipoproteins (脂蛋白), the so called good cholesterol (膽固醇), which is known to prevent heart disease.

As evidence has mounted (增長), some doctors have begun recommending a daily drink for patients of heart diseases. But most physicians are not ready to recommend a regular happy hour for everyone. The risks of teetotal ling (絕對戒酒) are nothing compared with the dangers of too much alcohol, including high blood pressure, strokes and liver troubles---not to mention violent behavior and traffic accident. Moreover, some studies suggest that even moderate drinking may increase the incidence of breast and colon cancer.Until there is evidence that the benefits of a daily dose (吸收劑量) of alcohol outweigh the risks, most people won’t be able to take a doctor’s prescription to the neighborhood bar or liquor store.

60.The report mentioned in the first paragraph indicates________.

A.the way in which alcohol can help the heart.

B.that a couple of cocktails daily can help stop heart problems

C.why alcoholic drinks are dangerous to one’s health

D.that reports on the advantages of alcohol were misled

61.Experiments showed that nondrinkers had___________.

A.larger amounts of good cholesterol   B.smaller amounts of good cholesterol

C.higher blood pressure              D.lower blood pressure

62.According to the passage, moderate drinking_______.

A.is recommended by most doctors for heart patients

       B.should be allowed on prescription

       C.is still not medically advisable

D.is not related to liver problems

63.The main theme of this passage is___________.

A.the change in recent drinking habits

B.the connection between cancer and alcohol

       C.whether moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers

D.whether alcohol may be good for one’s health

This week,We talk about the application process for American colleges and universities. This is Part Eight in our Foreign Student Series.Earlier,we explained  how to begin a search for schools by going to one of the American educational advising centers around the world. We also discussed the rules for entering in the United States.   71

But if your goal is to come to the United States to study, then it is time to make a list of  colleges of universities that interest you.  72   Directors of foreign student admissions say students should apply to at least three schools.

Some students want to attend a small college.Others want to go to a big university. That university in Columbus.Ohio,in the Midwest, has almost fifty-two thousand students. There are students this year from around one hundred fifty countries.Ohio State provides international students with an application on its Web site.  73   Or you can print the forms and mail them with the payment.

Many colleges and universities have their applications and also their catalogs online. You should start on your applications at least two years before you want to begin studies.  74   But answering all the questions is not enough.Another important step is taking admissions tests. The SAT is the college entry test that American high school students most commonly take.  75  Colleges and universities may also require international students to take the TOEFL—the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

A.Completing a college application can take some time.

B.You can pay the application charge online with a credit card.

C.Another one is the ACT.

D.If a really big university appeals to you, then there aye ones like Ohio State.
