B

Mary went out at night. She never forgot the night when she met a robber many years ago.

That evening, she was invited to a birthday party which lasted until two o’clock in the ?morning. Without company Mary walked along the quiet street.

Suddenly from the shadow of a dark building a tall man with a sharp knife in his right hand ran out at her. “Good evening, lady,” the man said in a low voice, “I don’t think you wish to die here.”

“What do you want?” Mary asked.

“Your earrings (耳環(huán)).Take them off!” Slowly Mary’s eyes looked down. She tried to cover her necklace with the collar(領(lǐng)子)of her overcoat while she used the other hand to take off both of her earrings, and then she quickly threw them on the ground.

“Take them and let me go.” she said. The robber looked at her only feeling uncertain. He saw the girl didn’t care for the earrings at all, only trying to protect the necklace. He realized the necklace would cost more. So he said, “Give me your necklace.”

“Oh, sir. It’s not worth much. Please let me keep it.”

“Stop rubbish. Quick!”

With shaky hands, Mary took off her necklace. As soon as the robber disappeared, she picked up her earrings and ran as fast as she could to one of her friends.

The earrings cost 480 pounds and the necklace the robber had taken away cost only six pounds ten shillings.

When someone says, "well, 1 guess I will have to face the music. It does not mean he is planning to go to a concert. It is something far less pleasant like being called in by your boss to explain why you did this and did that, and why you did not do this or that. Terrible music indeed, but it has to be faced. At some time or another, every one of us had to "face the music", especially as children. We can all remember father's angry voice, "I want to talk to you!" and only because we did not obey him. What an unpleasant business it was!

The phrase "to face the music" is familiar to every American, young or old. It is at least 100 years old. Where did the expression come from?

The first explanation comes from the American novelist James Penimore Cooper. He said in 1851 that the expression was first used by actors while waiting in the wings to go on stage . When they got their signal to go on, they often said, "Well, it's time to go to face the music." And that is exactly what they did face the orchestra  which was just below the stage.

Jamie Oliver has been invited by Gordon Brown to prepare a banquet at No.10 for President Barack Obama and other leaders of the G20,offering a cut-price menu to reflect times when trade and industry are far from prosperous and the rate of employment is decreasing.

Downing Street sources say Oliver, the well-known chef, will cook using“honest high—street products”and avoid expensive or“fancy”ingredients(材料).

The prime minister is trying to avoid a repeat of the embarrassment last year when he sat down to an 18-course banquet at a Japanese summit to discuss world food shortages.

Obama,President Nicolas Sarkozy of France,Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and other leaders will be served by apprentices(學(xué)徒)from Fifteen, the London restaurant Oliver founded to help train young people in poverty in order to make a living by mastering a skill.

Brown wants the dinner to reflect the emphasis of the London summit, which he hopes will lead to an agreement to lift the world out of depression.“To be invited to cook for such an important group of people, who are trying to solve some of the world’s major problems, is really a privilege,”said Oliver,“I’m hoping the menu I'm working on will show British food and produce is some of the best in the world, but also show we have pioneered a high-quality apprentice scheme at Fifteen London that is giving young people a skill to be proud of.”

The chef has not yet finalized the menu, but is expected to draw inspiration from his latest book, Jamie's Ministry of Foodwhich has budget recipes for beef and ale stew(啤酒燉菜)and “impressive” chocolate fudge cake.

Read the following passage and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph.  There is one extra heading which you do not need.

A. Allow for personal space

B. Show willingness to negotiate

C. Learn from conflict

D. Keep yourself calm

E. Focus on finding a solution

F. Talk about the mistakes

Ways to Deal with Conflict

76.

In heated situations, we have a tendency to speak first and think after. This results in aggression which aggravates (使惡化) the conflict. Instead, pause before you speak, think about what the person has said to you, and respond appropriately. By giving yourself this time to think, you cool down, and you are less likely to speak with anger. A lot of the time, the other people may want to argue for the sake of arguing.

77.

Everyone knows that people make mistakes because it’s human nature. However, it also seems to be human nature to fight acceptance of those mistakes. Conflicts often arise from mistakes, so it’s best to be upfront and honest about them. Identify the mistake that led to the conflict.

78.

In conflict, if someone walks away, allow him to do that. Don’t follow the person you’re in conflict with into another room because you haven’t said all you want to say. You wouldn’t want him following you if you felt the need to leave the situation. Also, don’t hover too close to the person you’re in conflict with. Allow him room to breathe. Don’t make him feel as if you’re backing him into a corner.

79.

It is very easy to point the finger or play the blame game when trouble arises. As easy as it is, it is not useful or productive. The main concern is to find a solution to the problem, not to determine who was wrong. If the problem is related to the work itself, keep the conversation focused on exactly what is wrong, and what can be done to fix it.

80.

Be open to the idea of compromise and let the other person know this. Before you approach the conversation, be confident in your stance and know what you are willing to negotiate on and what you feel strongly should not be compromised. Do your best to be flexible. Look for a way to come to a conclusion that satisfies both parties.
