The World Expo 2010 Shanghai China is to be staged in Shanghai from May 1 to October 31, 2010. If you plan to visit the Shanghai Expo this summer, the

China Pavilion is a must-see area for you.

The China Pavilion, which is called Oriental Crown

(東方之冠), is located at the center of the Expo site. Standing 63 meters tall, the China Pavilion takes the shape of an emperor’s crown, with the upper layers larger than the lower ones. Covering 160,000 square meters in floor space, the pavilion consists of a national hall and a regional hall. Construction on the China Pavilion began on Dec. 18, 2007. The design of the China Pavilion was picked from a total of 344 designs put forward by Chinese from around the world. The pavilion possesses both traditional and modern features, which helps develop the theme of the 2010 Expo “Better City, Better Life”. For example, it is red in appearance, which contains the elements of traditional Chinese culture, and it is green indoors, with the use of energy-saving techniques. The Shanghai World Expo is expected to attract 70 million visitors from across the globe. It is estimated that 400,000 people will visit the Expo and its 140 pavilions every day during the period, but the China Pavilion is only able to receive about one tenth of the total. How to accommodate so many people in the pavilion remains a tough task. Luckily, the China Pavilion is built as a permanent landmark.

During the Expo, the main structure will be used for an exhibition based on the theme of “Chinese wisdom in urban development" by explaining the values of harmony, nature and spirit. The three-story pavilion has three sections. The top floor’s "Footprint of the East" will show some of the changes in Chinese cities. There, you can see a film which shows how Chinese cities have changed, especially in the past 30 years. According to Lu Chuan, director of the film, the scenery is like something from The Lord of the Rings. On the second floor, "Journey of Wisdom” will explain China’s four great inventions. And the ground’s “Blossoming City” will display scenes from cities of the future.

Leo married my mother when I was 1l, two years later we moved into a house in a new suburban development. At first our lawn (草坪) was just a mud pile with a few untidy clumps of grass, but Leo saw bright possibilities. "Your mother wants flowers; she can plant them here, where there's lots of sun," he said, "We'll plant trees over there, to give us shade. And in the backyard, I'd like a barbecue.” Then he smiled. "After so many years of apartment living, now we can have cookouts (野餐)!”

Weekday mornings when the weather was bad, Leo often drove me to school. Having a father drop you off may have been taken for granted, but I always thought it was wonderful. During dinner, Leo would tell my brother and me stories about his job and we'd talk about our friendship and school-work.. "If you need any help, just ask me," he would say. "But I doubt that you need it. You two are so clever."

Some people might think that doing errands (差事) and eating meals together are nothing special, but , I , who had spent my childhood watching other families do these everyday activities before, enjoyed them now with great delight. Looking back, I realize that Leo gave me what I needed most--the experience of doing ordinary things together as a family.

One day, we learned that my "real" father -- who hadn't seen or supported my brother or me for more than five years --- wanted to see us again, on a regular basis. We remembered too well the early years we had spent with him. He had been angry and cruel, violent and unloving. Since my brother was then 17 years old, he didn't have to follow family-court rules. But because I was still a "minor", I had to meet with the judge.

When Leo, my mother, and I entered the courtroom, my "real" father was already present. I avoided his look and told the judge I was one of a new family now, and that Leo taught me how to make things, that he always listened to me and never raised his voice. I said I didn't want to see my "real" father any more because he had never shown any love for me or even much attention.

The judge looked at Leo. "How are things going?" he asked.

"They couldn't be better," Leo answered. "I'm a lucky man to have such a family."

Aren’t the best parents also good friends to their children, accepting them without reservation and telling them they can be counted on? Step families aren't bound by traditional ties, so the love and friendship they develop is extremely precious. Was Leo "perfect''? He'd deny it if I said so. And that's one reason why he was so "perfect" to me.

Soon after we moved to the suburb, one of our new neighbors introduced herself to me. She had already met my mother and Leo. "You know," she remarked, "you look just like your father."

I knew she was just making conversation---- but even so...

     "Thank you," I said.

     Why tell her anything different?

A. Leo had lived in a large house alone in the country before he married my mother.

B. Thanks to Leo, our lawn took on a new look.

C. Before Leo came. I was always picked up by my "real" father when the weather was bad.

D. Leo wouldn’t like to help my brother and me because we were very clever.

69. What was very important to step families according to the writer?

A. Love and friendship                B. Care and respect

C. Wealth and understanding           D. Politeness and kindness

70. It can be inferred from the passage that _____.

A. My "real" father’s request was refused and he was out of my life.

B. My mother and "real" father didn’t separate until my brother was 17.

C. Leo was no one special in my life.

D. Leo and I were so alike that my neighbors couldn’t tell us apart.

Star Wars Millennium Falcon

This is a gift that, if we’re being honest, many dads want to own for themselves. This huge ship is the greatest Star Wars toy. It lights up and makes some noises. Every boy from 3 to 53 will absolutely like it, if they can find room for it. I dare say even a few grandfathers might go for it.

Biscuit—the Loving Pup

You may clearly know that a pet can be a great thing to a child’s development but you probably don’t think that you can take care of a dog properly. The robot dog Biscuit is less likely to exacerbate the disorder of your house and except for a few dead batteries, won’t leave any surprises on the floor. It will be a good playmate for your kids.

JVC KD-10 Headphones

It’s increasingly common for kids to enjoy themselves on long journeys with a portable (便攜式的)DVD player or an iPod MP3, but the headphones that come with expensive electronics are seldom suitable for young ears. Kids should use JVC headphones that have a sound limiter that can be set by the concerned parent.

Sparrow-kids Routemaster Kit

Sparrow-kids Kit makes a huge range of craft (工藝) tools. There are lots of pretty but achievable projects for young girls to take up their (safe plastic) needles and sew.

Holz Wooden Airport

It might be said that Britain doesn’t need another airport but when it’s a traditional wooden toy like this all of you would agree that it’s a good thing. Treated with a little care, this play-set could easily entertain your young air traffic controllers.

The underlined word “exacerbate” in the second paragraph can be replaced by “         ”.

A.worsen               B.improve                    C.protect               D.cure

Which of the gifts is designed mainly for girls?

A.Holz Wooden Airport.                                   B.Sparrow-kids Routemaster Kit

C.Star Wars Millennium Falcon.                 D.Biscuit—the Loving Pup.

The five things listed in the passage are            .

A.presents for the whole family                  B.gifts mainly for children

C.craft tools for children                                   D.the latest high-tech products

科目: 來源: 題型:閱讀理解

The Red Panda isn’t much bigger than an average size house cat. At first you may think it’s a bear because of its name. They’re actually a member of the raccoon(浣熊) family which you can tell if you look at their appearance. The Red Panda has a long bushy tail that is useful in two ways. It helps them stay balanced when they are high up in the trees and it keeps them warm in cold weather. Their fur is thick and reddish brown, which may be why they’re known as the fire fox.

The Red Panda can be found in forested mountains. They’re originally from the forested mountain in the Himalayas in India, Nepal and Southern China. Bamboo is the most important part of their diet. They only eat the young leaves and shoots (嫩芽) of a bamboo plant. Red Pandas have a very low metabolic(新陳代謝的) rate in order to deal with their low energy diet and cool environmental temperatures.

They’re very shy and gentle and don’t hang around the wild too much during the day. If they feel endangered, they’ll stand on their back legs and make a hissing(嘶嘶) sound. Red Pandas are good climbers and spend most of their time living mainly in trees. Their claws are very strong and help them hold onto the branches. They sleep in an unusual way by curling up tightly and wrapping their tails around their heads while sitting on a branch. Sometimes they’ll sleep with their head beneath their chest and behind their back feet. This is the same position as an American raccoon sleeps.

You can tell that the Red Panda is a member of the raccoon family from ____.

      A. its name            B. its appearance           C. its diet                     D. its living place

Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. The Red Panda can only be found in India, Nepal and Southern China.

B. The Red Panda’s tail can help it stay balanced when it is high up in the trees.

C. The Red Panda eats the whole of the bamboo.

D. The Red Panda has high metabolic rate when the temperature is low.

What will Red Pandas do when they are in trouble?

A. They will hang around the wild during the day.

B. They will climb into the trees.

C. They will wrap their tails around their heads.

D. They will stand on their back legs and make a hissing sound.

The Red Panda holds onto the branches with its ____.

      A. tail                   B. fur                           C. back legs           D. claws
