People travel for a lot of reasons. Some tourists go to see battlefields or religious shrines (宗教圣地).Others are looking for culture,or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. But most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.

Northern European are willing to pay a lot of money and put up with a lot of inconveniences for the sun because they have so little of it.People of cities like London,Copenhagen, and Amsterdam spend a lot of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterranean has always attracted them.Every summer, more than 25 million people travel to Mediterranean resort and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason:sun!

The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economies of Mediterranean countries. Italy’s 30,000 hotels are booked every summer. And 13 million people camp out on French beaches, parks and roadsides.Spain’s long sandy coastline attracts more people than anywhere else.37 million tourists visit yearly,or one tourist for every person living in Spain.

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can handle. The Mediterranean is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. And with increased tourism,it’s getting worse, The French can’t figure out what to do with all the garbage left by campers around St.Tropez.And in many places, swimming is dangerous because of pollution.

None of this, however,is spoiling anyone’s fun.The Mediterranean gets more popular every year with tourists.Obviously, they don’t go there for clean water and solitude(獨居).They bear traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don’t even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is,the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines,it’s still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin,London,or Oslo.

B.to tell us how wealthy their people are

C.to suggest that these cities lack places of historic interest and scenic beauty

D.to prove that they have got more tourism than they handle

53.According to the passage, which of the following countries attracts more tourists than the others?

C.every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist

D.every Spanish is visited by a tourist every year

第三部分  閱讀理解(共20小題,每題2分,滿分40分)

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A、B、C、D四個選項中,選出一個最佳選項,并在答題卡上將該項涂黑。

The key to happiness is how quickly you can get back your focus on what’s important.

----Anonymous

Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here's what happened. I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when, all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car’s back end by just inches!

The driver of the other car, who almost caused a big accident, started yelling bad words at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, "Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!" And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call "The Law of the Garbage Truck."

Many people are like garbage (rubbish) trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be happy with what you did.

I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets? It was that day I said, "I'm not going to do anymore."

Successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their day. What about you? If you let more garbage trucks pass you by, you'll be happier. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So, Love the people who treat you right. Forget about the ones who don't.

58. What does the taxi driver think of people according to Paragraph 3?

A. Many people like to drive garbage trucks.

B. Many people dump garbage wherever they like.

C. Many people are warm-hearted to make others happy.

D. Many people tend to be very much depressed.

59. What can we infer from Paragraph 4?

A. The author used to have a lot of garbage trucks.

B. The author used to complain a lot.

C. The author used to have a lot of money.

D. The author used to be a good manager.

60. According to the passage, what should you do if people “dump garbage” on you?

Women might have a higher position at work, but at home their careers tend to give way to their husband’s job, with women most likely to quit when both are working long hours, according to a U.S.study.

Researcher Youngjoo Cha, from Cornell University, found that working women with a husband who worked 50 hours or more a week found themselves still doing most of the housework and the care giving and were more likely to end up quitting their jobs.

An analysis of 8,484 professional workers and 17,648 nonprofessionals from dual-earner (雙職工) families showed that if women had a husband who worked 60 hours or more per week it increased the woman’s possibility of quitting her paid job by 42 percent.Cha said the possibility of quitting increased to 51 percent for professional women whose husbands work 60 hours or more per week, and for professional mothers the possibility they would quit their jobs jumped 112 percent.

However, it did not significantly affect a man’s possibility of quitting his job if his wife worked 60 hours or more per week, according to the study published in the American Sociological Review in April. For professional men, both parents and non-parents, the effects of a wife working long hours were negligible, according to the study.

“As long work-hours introduce conflict between work and family into many dual-earner families, couples often solve conflict in ways that prioritize husbands’ careers,” Cha, who used data from the U.S.Census Bureau, said in a statement.“This effect is magnified (突出) among workers in professional and managing occupations, where the criterion of overwork and the culture of looking after children tend to be strongest. The findings suggest that the popularity of overwork may lead many dual-earner couples to return to a traditional family pattern — breadwinning men and homemaking women.”

66.According to the text, we know that ______.

A.men prefer work long hours   B.women prefer to work outside

C.men’s careers are unimportant    D.women are more likely to quit jobs

68.Which statement is true according to the text?

A.When there’s conflict between work and family, a husband will give up his work.

B.Women may still do most of the housework and care for babies or children.

C.Professional women are more likely to quit the job than professional mothers.

D.A man’s chance of quitting jobs was influenced if his wife works long hours.

69.We can infer from the last sentence that ______.

A.a(chǎn)ll the workers pay more attention to looking after children

B.overwork may have no influence on dual-earner couples

C.traditionally, men usually worked to support the family

D.most dual-earner couples will return to a traditional family pattern

During recent years, floods and flash floods have caused billions of dollars in damage each year. They are among the most common and widespread of all natural disasters. Even more importantly, they’re No.1 weather-related killer. A flood can happen anywhere along the Mississippi, in New England, even in the desert.

The following are some fascinating facts about floods and flash floods.

A flood(commonly called river flood)is high flow of water from a river or similar body of water, happening over a period of time too long to be considered a flash flood. Flooding is caused in many ways. Winter or spring rains, together with melting snows, can fill rivers too quickly. Heavy rains from hurricanes or other tropical(熱帶的)systems can also produce river flooding. The Mississippi River Flood of 1993 was caused by repeated heavy rain from thunderstorms over a period of weeks.

Flash floods are quickly-rising floods which are usually the result of heavy rains over a short period of time, often only several hours or even less. They can also be caused by ice jams(冰塞)on rivers related to a winter or spring melting, or occasionally even a dam break. The constant influx(匯集) of water finally caused a great overflow to begin, powerful enough to sweep vehicles away, roll big stones into roadways, uproot trees, level(夷平) buildings, and knock bridges down. The speed of the rising of water is the most frightening.

Do remember: Move to higher ground and stay away from low areas during heavy rain. Stay out of flooded areas. Never allow children especially to play or walk in flowing water. Never drive your car into water of unknown depths.
