China is the biggest market in the world, and many countries such as Germany, the USA, the UK and Russia do a lot of business in China. Let’s have a look at some important tips to help you be successful when dealing with these nationalities,

First, you must be punctual(準(zhǔn)時的) with Germans. Even 5 minutes late makes a bad impression. Being punctual is also very important in the USA. In the UK, it’s important to be punctual for business meetings, but nobody expects you to be on time for a social event. Half past seven really means a quarter to eight, or even eight o’clock! With Russians, you should always be on time, though it is not unusual for them to be one or even two hours late!

It is best to dress formally and wear dark colours when you meet people from all the four countries. In Russia, designer clothes are very common.. Don’t be surprised if you go to an office in the UK on a Friday and find everyone wearing jeans. Many companies have "dress down Friday", when people wear casual (隨便的) clothes.

In Germany, first names are only used by family members and close friends, so be prepared to use titles and last names. In the USA you will usually be invited to use first names almost immediately. The British are quite informal and using first names in business is more and more common, especially among younger people. In Russia, however, nobody uses first names, so use titles and last names.

In conversation, the British and the Americans value humour, and both like to talk about sport. The weather is also a good topic of conversation with the British and the Americans, but avoid talking about politics. In Russia, say positive (積極的)things about their country, but avoid making complaints(抱怨). The Germans, however, prefer to get straight down to business!

So, use these tips, and you will be on your way to a successful international business career!

Which color should you NOT wear when meeting a person from the USA?

A. Dark blue.      B. Gray.         C. Black.       D. White.

All of the following statements are true EXCEPT ________.

    A. you can say something funny when you talk to an American

    B. you can use his first name when you talk to an Englishman

C. you must be on time when you meet people from each of the four countries

    D. people wear whatever they like on Friday in some companies in the UK

When you talk to a Russian, you can ________.

    A. complain about something

B. say something negative about his country

C. say something good about his country

D. point out some disadvantages in politics

The tips in this passage are probably given to people from ______.

A. China        B. the USA      C. Germany      D. the UK

For more than six million American children, coming home after school means coming home to an empty house. Some deal with the situation by watching TV. Some may hide. But all of them have something in common. They spend part of each day alone. They’re called latchkey children. They’re children who look after themselves while their parents work and their bad condition has become a subject of concern(關(guān)心)。

Lynette Long was once the principal(校長)of an elementary school. Said, “We had a school rule against wearing jewelry. A lot of the kids had chains around their necks with keys attached(附帶)。 I was often telling them to put them inside their shirts. There were so many keys that it never came to my mind what they meant.” Slowly, she learned they were house keys.

She and her husband began talking to the children who had them. They learned of the effect working couples and single parents had on their children Fear is the biggest problem faced by children at home alone. One in each three latchkey children the Longs talked to reported being scared(害怕).Many had nightmares and were worried about their own safety.

The most common way latchkey children deal with their fears is by hiding. It might be in a shower stall, under a bed, in a closet. The second is TV. They’ll often play it high volume.

It’s hard to get statistics(統(tǒng)計數(shù)字)on latchkey children, the Longs learned. Most parents are slow to admit they leave their children alone.

The main idea about “l(fā)atchkey” children is that they ______.

are growing in numbers

are also found in middle-class neighborhoods

watch too much TV during the day

suffer problems from being left alone

Which sentence in the second paragraph is the topic sentence?

We had a school rule against wearing jewelry.

A lot of kids had chains around their necks.

I was often telling them to put them inside their shirts.

She learned they were house keys.

The main feeling these children have when they are at home by themselves is ______.

   A. tiredness     B. freedom     C. loneliness     D. fear

The word “nightmare” in the third paragraph probably means______.

   A. night suit                                  B. night habit

   C. terrible dream at night          D. staying up at night

We may draw a conclusion that_______.

latchkey children enjoy having such a large amount of time alone

latchkey children try to hide their feeling

latchkey children often watch TV with their parents

it’s difficult to find out how many latchkey children there are
