While many Americans hope the new stimulus(刺激) package will provide some relief in the year ahead, many who were recently laid off or are facing layoffs are looking for a more immediate solution, such as a new job. But, according to Josh Klapow, clinical psychologist at the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Public Health, a clear mind is the first step to finding a new job.

“After a job loss, a person’s memory and concentration can be weakened. Within the first 24 hours of being laid off, the best thing to do is doing nothing,” said Klapow. “I encourage people to just cool it.”

According to Klapow, many people tend to over-think their situation, which may lead to anxiety, and difficulty sleeping and concentrating. Instead of letting your thoughts race, Klapow suggests writing a list of tasks.

“Write down everything you think you may need to do, then make a list,” he said. “It gets your thoughts out of your head and onto a piece of paper.”

Once your mind is clear, and the list is in front of you, you can start from the top and do one thing at a time, he said.

Not having to prepare for work in the morning may no longer be an excuse to watch the morning hours tick away from under the covers.

Staying in bed allows anxiety and guilt to build up within oneself, he said. Getting a start to the day keeps away the negative thoughts associated with losing a job, and allows you to work on applying of other positions and getting things done.

Getting up early may not seem appealing if there isn’t much to do. Taking part in activities or taking on projects that would have previously cut into work hours is a good way to stay positive.

Activities can include exercising, volunteering, or attending career fairs. These can not only improve your emotional well-being, but also help you discover opportunities you may not have found if you stayed at home.

“We have the tendency to think of problems as permanent, but they always get resolved in the end,” said Klapow. “The important thing is for a person not to go downhill and stay there.”

Laughter is the best medicine, as the saying goes. And although laughter may not bring a nation out of a recession(經(jīng)濟(jì)衰退), it can bring about a positive outlook. According to Klapow, laughing can improve your physiological(生理的) response to losing a job.

What I’ve noticed about some very successful business owners is that they are always learning and growing.

For your business to be better you need to be better and, you don’t get better by doing nothing!

You are the average of the five PEOPLE you hang around with most. Surround yourself with people whom you want to be like.

To do this you may have to get right out of your comfort zone and join in a coaching program, go along to seminars(專題討論會) where you can meet other like-minded people or those playing at a higher level of business than you.

There’s no excuse not to get off your butt and learn your way to success. Regardless of where you are located events are taking place all around the country regularly as well as online. Saying you have “no money” or “no time” is not a good enough excuse.

For many business owners they spend their whole lives using these excuses and going nowhere. Don’t focus on where you are now, but where you want to be. You’ll find the money and the time if you seriously want to change.

You ongoing learning can take you from struggling along to soaring high in all areas of your life.

It’s been nearly six months since you made those New Year decisions to make changes in your business and your life.

Are you getting the results you wanted?

Is your business more profitable?

Do you have more free time?

Is the quality of your life improving?

Is your answer “yes”, then take a look at why that is. What have you been doing to get these results? And if you’re not moving ahead, seriously look at why that is. When’s the last time you read a book, listened to a CD, got coached or attended a seminar to learn how to do things better?

The people I know who are getting great results in their business and personal lives are always learning and growing.

You are the Secret to Your Success, so do everything within your power to invest in yourself.

Hello all! My name is Amanda and I will start homeschooling this fall. My daughter is almost 5 and my husband and I decided to homeschool her instead of sending her to public schools for many reasons. My family is very supportive so that helps a lot!!! I think with all that is going on in this world....my daughter is safest with me! Period. Not only that but I want to teach her morals and values that she would not get in a public school. Thanks for having me.

Hi, my name is Phoebe and I have two children, one in 4th and one in 6th. We started homeschooling when my oldest was in preschool. Our main priority was in teaching our children the Bible and we knew that sending them to public school, they would not hear or learn anything from God’s Word. I also feel that as a parent it is a gift to teach our children to better prepare them for God’s purpose for their lives. I thank God that He allows us to teach our children. We really feel glad to be doing this.

Hi, all, Anji here. We have homeschooled continuously since 1990. Our six children range in age from 25-5. When my oldest son, Pedd, reached 6th grade at the age of 10, his teacher said that he was so immature for the class! Couldn’t he repeat fifth grade? No, we were firm, he was on the honor roll in fifth grade and making him repeat a grade would hurt him spiritually. My husband brought up the idea of homeschooling.

Someday a stranger will read your e-mail without Your permission or scan the website you’ve visited. Or perhaps someone will casually glance through your credit card purchases or cellphone bills to find out your shopping preferences or calling habits.

In fact, it’s likely some of these things have already happened to you. Who would watch you without Your permission? It might be a spouse, a girlfriend, a marketing company, a boss, a cop or a criminal. Whoever it is, they will see you in a way you have never intended to be seen―the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked.

Psychologists tell us boundaries are healthy―it’s important to reveal yourself to friends, family and lovers stages, at appropriate times. But few boundaries remain. The digital bread crumbs you leave everywhere make it easy for strangers to reconstruct who you are, where you are and what you like. In some cases, a simple Google search can reveal what you think. Like it or not, increasingly we live in a world where you simply cannot keep a secret.

The key question is: Does that matter?

For many Americans, the answer apparently is “no”.

When opinion polls ask Americans about privacy, most say they are concerned about losing it. A survey found an overwhelming pessimism about privacy, with 60 percent of respondents saying they feel their privacy is “slipping away, and that bothers me.”

But people say one thing and do another. Only a tiny fraction of Americans change any behaviors in an effort to preserve their privacy. Few people turn down a discount at tollbooths(收費(fèi)站) to avoid using the EZ-Pass system that can track automobile movement. And few turn down supermarket loyalty cards. Privacy economist Alessandro Acauisti has run a series of tests that reveal people will surrender personal information like Social security numbers Just to get their hands on a pitiful 50-centoff coupon(優(yōu)惠券).

But privacy does matter―at least sometimes. It’s like health: When you have it, you don’t notice it. Only when it’s gone do you wish you’d done more to protect it.

60. What does the author mean by saying “the 21st century equivalent of being caught naked” in paragraph2?

       A. People’s personal information is easily accessed without their knowledge.

       B. In the 21st century people try every means to look into other’s secrets.

       C. People tend to be more flank with each other in the information age.

       D. Criminals are easily caught on the spot with advanced technology.

61. What would psychologists advise on the relationships between friends?

       A. Friends should open their hearts to each other.

       B. Friends should always be faithful to each other.

       C. There should be a distance even between friends.

       D. There should be fewer disputes between friends.

62. According to the passage, privacy is like health in that _______.

       A. people will make every effort to keep it

       B. its importance is rarely understood

       C. it is something that can easily be lost

       D. people don’t cherish it until they lose it

Sarah Williams went to a boarding school. Here is one of the letters she wrote to her parents from the school:
