We all know that everyone becomes a little more forgetful as they get older, but men's minds decline more than women's, according to the results of a worldwide survey.

General differences seem to be inherent in male and female brains: Men are better at maintaining and dealing with mental images (useful in mathematical reasoning and spatial skills), while women tend to excel at(擅長于) recalling information from their brain's files. Many studies have looked for a connection between sex and the amount of mental decline (衰退) people experience as they age, but the results have been mixed.

Some studies found more age-related decline in men than in women, while others saw the opposite or even no relationship at all between sex and mental decline.

Those results could be improper because the studies involved older people, and women live longer than men: The men tested are the survivors, "so they're the ones that may not have shown such cognitive(認(rèn)知的) decline," said study team leader Elizabeth of the University of Warwick in England.

Scientists surveyed completed four tasks that tested sex-related cognitive skills: matching an object to its rotated form, matching lines shown from the same angle, typing as many words in a particular category (范疇) as possible in the given time, e.g. "object usually colored gray", and recalling the location of objects in a line drawing. The first two were tasks at which men are usually good; the latter are typically dominated by women. Within each age group studied, men and women performed better in their separate categories on average. And though performance declined with age for both genders, women showed obviously less decline than men overall.

Most young people enjoy some form of physical activity. It may be walking, cycling, or swimming, or in winter, skating or skiing. It may be a game of some form ---- football, basketball, hockey, golf or tennis. It may be mountaineering.

Those who have a passion for climbing high and difficult mountains are often looked upon with astonishment. Why are men and women willing to suffer cold and hardship, and to take risks in high mountains? This astonishment is caused, probably, by the difference between mountaineering and other forms of activity to which men give their leisure.

Mountaineering is a sport and not a game. There are no man-made rules, as others, as there are for such games as golf and football. There are, of course, rules of different kind which it would be dangerous to ignore, but it is this freedom from man-made rules that makes mountaineering attractive to many people. Those who climb mountains are free to use their own methods.

If we compare mountaineering and other more familiar sports, we might think that one big difference is that mountaineering is not a “team game”. We should be mistaken in this. There are, it is true, no “matches” between “teams” of climbers, but when climbers are on a rock face linked by a rope on which their lives may depend, there is obviously teamwork.

The mountain climber knows that he may have to fight forces that are stronger and more powerful than man. He has to fight the forces of nature. His sport requires high mental and physical qualities.

A mountain climber continues to improve in skill year after year. A skier is probably past his best by the age of thirty. But it is not unusual for men of fifty or sixty to climb the highest mountains in the Alps. They may take more time than younger men, but they perhaps climb with more skill and less waste of effort, and they certainly experience equal enjoyment.

1. What movements are popular among people in winter in the passage?

A.Soccer and golf.                                  B.Skiing and skating.

C.Cycling and hockey.                             D.Mountaineering.

2. The underlined word “passion”(Para.2) could best be replaced by ________.

A.strong emotion        B.depression        C.feeling                    D.a(chǎn)stonishment

3. Mountaineering is a sport, not a game because ________.

A.it has man-made rules

B.it is too dangerous for climbers

C.it can’t bring people joy and leisure

D.it is free for climbers to use their own methods

4. A mountain climber must be strong both mentally and physically because _______.

A.there are no regular man-made rules for him to follow

B.there is no teamwork and he has to depend on himself

C.his component is not one or several people but the powerful nature

D.mountaineering requires the skills practiced year after year

5. We know from the passage that _______.

A.mountaineering has no appeal to people

B.physical quality is more important than mental one for climbers

C.it is possible for an old man of fifty or sixty to climb the Alps

D.a(chǎn) mountain climber would pass his best by the age of thirty

The common cold is the world’s most widespread illness, which is plagues(疫。 that flesh receives.

The most widespread fallacy(謬誤) of all is that colds caused by cold. They are not. They are caused by viruses passing on from person to person. You catch a cold by coming into contact, directly or indirectly, with someone who already has one. If cold causes colds, it would be reasonable to expect the Eskimos to suffer from them forever. But they do not. And in isolated arctic regions explorers have reported being free from colds until coming into contact again with infected people from the outside world by way of packages and mail dropped from airplanes.

During the First World War soldiers who spent long periods in the trenches(戰(zhàn)壕), cold and wet, showed no increased tendency to catch colds.

In the Second World War prisoners at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp(集中營), naked and starving, were astonished to find that they seldom had colds. At the Common Cold Research Unit in England, volunteers took part in Experiments in which they gave themselves to the discomforts of being cold and wet for long stretches of time. After taking hot baths, they put on bathing suits, allowed themselves to be with cold water, and then stood about dripping wet in drafty room. Some wore wet socks all day while others exercised in the rain until close to exhaustion. Not one of the volunteers came down with a cold unless a cold virus was actually dropped in his nose.

If, then, cold and wet have nothing to do with catching colds, why are they more frequent in the winter?Despite the most pains-taking research, no one has yet found the answer. One explanation offered by scientists is that people tend to stay together indoors more in cold weather than at other times, and this makes it easier for cold viruses to be passed on.

No one has yet found a cure for the cold. There are drugs and pain suppressors(止痛片) such as aspirin, but all they do is relieve the symptoms(癥狀).

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

When I was a little girl , my mother always told me what I should do and not .What I can remember is that when I was in the primary school, I didn’t want to go to school because I hated the math teacher who used to punish me for I didn’t finish my homework on time. Instead of forcing me to go to school, my mother just told me if I didn’t go to school my friends and my teachers would not like me anymore. What’s more, she told me I should not hate the math teacher on account of my fault and never hate anybody if I wanted to be likable. Since that time, I have known that being likable is very important.

While I was growing up, I read a lot of books in order to be a likable person. There is a famous writer, Dale Carnegie. He wrote a book called How to Win Friends and Influence People, which taught me a lot .Being a likable person we should respect others and become genuinely interested in other people. In my opinion, the most significant one is that we should be honest and sincere. The second way is that we should be glad to give them a hand when it is needed. Finally, I suppose that being a good listener is quite important as well. We should participate in their suffering and encourage them in time.

In a word, only if we stand by the people even when they are in the darkest time and never desert them can we be a likable in the social life.
