Mary Kom from Manipur won the world women’s boxing championship thrice consecutively （三連冠）or in three straight years in the 46 kilogram category．She won her titles in Turkey in 2004，in Russia in 2005 and in Delhi in 2007．  

    How many of us know of the achievements of this powerhouse of punches who comes from a remote village in the northeastern state of Manipur．She is a known name，the best in her sport．But in India，many people would be surprised even to know that there is something called women’s boxing．

    Mangte Chungneijang Mary Kom was born into a farming family in Kangathei village．Life was hard．For her father，who lived by farming，looking after the needs of three daughters and a son was not very easy．At school Mary Kom played football and took part in athletics，but boxing was her secret love．Her inspiration was the Manipuri boxer Dingko Singh who had made a name for himself in the country and abroad．She had al so heard of greats like Muhammad Ali．

    In 2000，the teenager had made up her mind．One day she went to the boxing coach at the local centre of the Sports Authority of India and said she wanted to take up boxing．The coach soon discovered that the small built girl had a tremendous fighting spirit．  

    Mary Kom insisted on going through the same training as the boys．In two weeks she had learnt all the basics．However，her family had no idea of the sport Mary Kom had got  into-boxing is seen as a boys’ game and forbidden to girls．That very year Mary Kom won a state championship title in Manipur．Her photograph appeared in the newspapers．Her secret was out and her father was very angry．

Hundreds of people lined up at Grand Central Terminal yesterday，but they weren’t there to catch a train．They came to New York City’s famous railroad station to trade in old dollar bills for the new George Washington Presidential $1 coin．   

    The gold--colored coin is the first in a new series by the U．S．Mint（造幣廠）that honors former U．S．Presidents．The Mint will issue four Presidential $l coins a year through 2016．Presidential $1 coins will come out in the order in which each President served．The George Washington coin is the first to be released．John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison coins will come out later this year．

A New Look

    The Presidential $1 coins will be the same size and color as the Sacagawea Golden Dollar．However，there is an important difference．  For the first time since the 1930s，there is an inscription on the edge of each coin．It includes the year in which the coin was issued and two traditional mottos：“In God we trust”and“E pluribus unum．”

    Each coin will show a different President on its face，or heads side．It will al so show the President’s name，the order in which he served and hi s years in office．The other side of the coin will show the Statue of Liberty and the inscriptions“United States of America”and “$1．”

    Not Just for Collectors 

    Becky Gross，16，was one of the first people to put a Presidential coin in her pocket．She and her mother，Karen Martin，were visiting New York from London，England，on the day the new coins were released．They say t he coins make a great souvenir．

But the coins aren’t just for collectors．“The new Presidential $l coins are an educational and fun way to learn about former President s，”says U．S．Mint director Edmund Moy．They have practical uses too．At Grand Cent real Terminal，Moy kicked off the coin exchange by placing a Presidential $1 coin in a New York City parking meter．

Sometime early in the next century, human beings will move to Mars（火星）．They will live there for about a year，and then will be replaced with another group of pioneers．Building he base on Mars will advance our knowledge of the solar system and aid in our under standing of the earth．   

      We already know that Mars resembles the earth in many aspects：general size，presence of water，length of day． range of temperatures．These resemblances have caused many people to consider a centuries’ long project：to terraform Mars．Terraforming means altering a planet’s surface so that Earth’s life forms can survive there．This concept，previously found only in science diction is now being seriously considered by scientists．

    Terraforming Mars is theoretically simple：add nitrogen and oxygen to the atmosphere；pump water to the surface；and add the earth’s plants and animals in the order in which they developed on earth．But it will take at least 300 years．

    Some people think that such a project is too huge for humans to undertake，but there are very good reasons to make the attempt．The earth now contains some 6 billion people and no one has any idea of how many humans the earth can support．Our very existence and numbers are threatening many other species．We also have had some experience with terraforming our own planet：altering the landscape，the atmosphere and the climate．Currently terraforming earth has become a wiser activity as we try to control global warming，air and water pollution，and preserve some natural living places．

Burj Al Arab（Arab Tower）, the so--called“world’s only seven--star hotel”，has over 90 per cent occupancy rate（入住率）after it opened in Dubai．

    Since it opened in 1999，this sail--shaped hotel rising from the Arabian Gulf has been in mystery．This is not surprising because Burl Al Arab charges a minimum of 1000 US dollars per night and prevents non--hotel guests form entering it．
