“Image is everything.” An entire industry has been built upon the precondition that image is everything, but when it comes down to it, an appealing image is not enough. If there is no substance behind the image, the product, service or person will fail at length.

20090507

First of all, one should consider how important image is in the selling of products and services.Advertising agencies have raised the art of creating an image to a state of near perfection.Public concept of that product or service is certainly managed by the images created by the advertising agencies. But if the product or service does not live up to the image that was created, the customer will be very dissatisfied and possibly ask for their money back. For example, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm had spent decades building up an image of trustworthiness. But the recent scandal (丑聞) showed that behind that image, it had dishonest business practices.Despite the previous positive image, the firm is being accused of criminal actions and it will probably not survive as a business unit.Although the image had been nearly perfect, the reality behind the image has led to the downfall of the world famous accounting firm.

Similarly, personal consultants can build up a public image for politicians and movie stars.Putting out positive news releases, making sure that only the best photographs are published, and ensuring that the person is seen in all the right places can build up a very positive image in the view of the general commons. But once again, history is filled with examples of both politicians and movie stars that fell from grace(體面)like the story of the Hollywood actor giving in to the pressures of fame and fortune. With people, just as with products and services, image is certainly important, but without positive substance behind the image, failure is close.

To summarize, it is clear that an appealing image is extremely important to success, whether that image is related to selling a product or service or to the "selling" of a person. But image is only half of the equation. What lies behind that image is every bit as important as the image itself—the person or product must deliver on that image or there is little chance for long-term success.

1.The downfall of the Arthur Andersen accounting firm is due to ______.

A.its dishonesty in business                   B.its previous images

C.its bad management                   D.its poor service

2.Why did some famous people fall from grace?

A.Their images were not well built up       B.They failed to live up to their images.

C.They felt much pressure from the public. D.They paid little attention to fame and fortune.

3.The structure of the passage is             .

4.The author tries to argue that______.

A.image creates everything                   B.image is the key to success

C.truth goes hand in hand with image        D.truth and image are equally important

Time is valuable but limit. There’s a famous saying, “Time is life”, this shows the importance of time. When time had gone, it will never return. It is a pity when many people make poor use of time. They spend their precious time oversleeping, drinking and hanging around. They don’t realize wasting time is equal with wasting part of their life. They always regret having made little achievement so far. However, we should form the habit of value time.Do not put off what can be done today tomorrow.Laziness will not only bring us the failure, but lead us to the road to poverty and even deaths.

Research shows that humans switch from selfish to unselfish behavior when they are watched. Do you?

A picture of a set of eyes on a computer screen can cause a change in the way people act. Even images of eyes on a charity donation collection box encourage people to be unselfish, because people put more money in a collection box that has a picture of eyes on it than they do when a flower symbol is on the box.

Manfred Milinski from the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany and Bettina Rockenbach of the University of Berlin, the authors of a new study, found that people act better when they are being watched because they feel they will be rewarded for good behavior. Their report also referred to other research showing that this response of behaving well when watched is somehow coded into humans and people respond this way unconsciously, or without realizing it.

It is not just humans that act unselfishly when they are being watched. A fish called the grooming fish cleans other fish. When other fish are around, it is gentler. When no other fish are around, however, the grooming fish bites chunks from the fish it is supposed to be cleaning.

The researchers suggest that the best way to get people to behave in the correct way is to make them feel watched. This could be the reason for the success of a famous American army poster. On it was a picture of an elderly man staring fiercely and pointing, it appeared, to the person who was looking at the poster. Under the picture was the caption(字幕) “I Want You”.  It encouraged hundreds of thousands of young American men to join the army during the Second World War to fight the Germans and Japanese.

Our town is in the eastern part of our country.Once a year, we elect a girl to show how beautiful and great our town is.All the girls are eager to get this position in an effort to become popular.

It was not an easy choice this year, since there were eight girls to choose from. The elder judge finally decided that either Sara or May would get the position. Both girls were beautiful with extraordinary appearance.Besides, they had a good education and cared about how pollution had a bad effect on the earth. Most important, both girls got up early to eat eggs at their breakfast.Eggs were important to people of the east of our town because the economy here depended mainly on the production of eggs.

“Either girl will win,” my father said, “But someone will cry in the end.”

“Either will be fine,” I said, “They are both great girls.”

The final round was held at the east edge of our town.Sara lived nearby so she did not need to get up early to arrive. However, she was the first person there.“You know what they say about the early bird”she said with a smile.

However, May arrived fifteen minutes late to the competition.“It’s the taxi driver’s fault,” she said.“I told him to head east, but he was in one ear and thought I said Bread Cheese. You know, Bread Cheese is the name of our neighboring town.”

I thought May would certainly lose because she was late, but to my surprise, she turned out to be this year’s winner. The judges liked her answer to their last question, “If you could have anything in the world, what would it be?” Sara replied, “World peace.” May, on the other hand, said, “Better market to have our eggs sell well”.

1. Why was it difficult to make a choice this year?

A. Because the girls just looked alike.

B. Because people had to choose from eight girls.

C. Because all the girls liked eggs.

D. Because all the girls had a good education.

2. What does the underlined sentence “You know what they say about the early bird.” mean?

A. she liked the early bird very much.

  B. she was sure that she would succeed.

  C. she lived nearby, so she should get there early.

  D. she wanted to show off her good language knowledge.

3. Why was May chosen in the end?

  C. Because she looked more beautiful than Sara.

D. Because her answer was more practical than Sara’s.

4. According to the passage, which of the following maps is correct?

If you have heard the report that the Cabinet(內(nèi)閣)of the government of the Maldives, an Indian island nation, has held a meeting under water to make people aware of climate change, you will grasp the chance to visit the Maldives as soon as possible.

Activities

The pure white beaches and brilliant sunlight in the Maldives invite tourists with promises of “the last paradise(天堂)on earth”.It's also a major destination for scuba divers, who come for the fantastic coral reefs(珊瑚礁)and the wealth of life in the ocean. But it's not a place for those with a low travel budget(預(yù)算)or those who want to travel independently and live as the locals do.

The tourism strategy

Tourism in the Maldives is carefully managed. The lack of local resources makes it necessary to import everything that a visitor needs, so it can't really compete on price. The strategy has been to develop a limited number of good tourist spots, each on its islands where no people live.

The tourism strategy also aims to reduce the bad effects of tourism on their traditional way of life.Tourists can pay short guided visits to local fishing villages, but must then return to their tourist spot.To stay longer or to travel to islands outside the tourist zone requires a good reason and a special permit.

Warning

The islands of the Maldives were hit by a tsunami(海嘯)caused by a big underwater earthquake on December 26.The Maldives—a popular diving and honeymoon destination in the Indian Ocean—is one of several nations circling the Bay of Bengal that were hit by the terrible waves.Around 50 people have been killed.Travelers are urged to delay visiting those areas, and to seek advice from their local governments.

Driving in a foreign country is always different in at least some ways from driving in your own country. Here are some general points regarding driving in New Zealand.

●Visitors wishing to drive in New Zealand do not require an international driver’s license but are required to carry their local driver’s license whenever driving.

●Vehicles drive on the left-hand side of the road as they do in Britain, Australia, and Japan. Most rental vehicles will have a sticker reminding you of this important fact.

●When the traffic light is red, you must stop. There is no left turn rule as in North America.

●New Zealand road rules follow international standards but please note that in New Zealand vehicles turning left must give way to traffic turning right.

●In general, if you are turning left (where there are give-way signs or no signs), give way to vehicles that not turning. In all other situations, give way to vehicles crossing or coming from your right.

●Seat belts must be worn at all times while driving in New Zealand. This stands for the driver and passengers. The driver is responsible for ensuring all passengers are wearing their seatbelts.

●Do not drink alcohol before driving in New Zealanddrinking and driving laws are strictly enforced.

●Speed limits are in kilometres per hour (kph), not miles per hour (mph).

Speed conversion: 1 kph equals 0.621 mph; 1 mph equals 1.61 kph.

●The speed limit on the open road is 100km/h.In towns and cities the speed limit is 50km/h.Be sure to obey all school crossing speed reductions as speed cameras operate regularly throughout New Zealand.
