Football, to me, is more than just a game. I have probably learned more valuable lessons from it than from school.

When I joined the team freshman year, I didn’t realize what I was getting into. Even though I had been playing since fourth grade and knew it was hard work, nothing would prepare me for the effort I would put into football that year. We worked all summer in the weight room and ran on the track(跑道) to get in physical and mental(精神上的) shape before the season.

See, football is more of a mental sport than anything else, so running on the track wasn’t only about getting in shape. We would push our minds by running as hard as we could even if we were going to pass out. At the beginning, I was immature(幼稚) and only thought of myself, sometimes even gave up when I was tired or hurt. Then after the third game I had a season-ending injury. Imagine working all summer and then only being able to play three games! I needed surgery(外科手術(shù)) on my arm and at least five months to recover.

Needless to say, I missed the rest of the season, but this actually helped me realize that since you never know when your last play will be, you should try your hardest in football and life.

After freshman year I decided that I would always give my best effort. Playing varsity(校隊的) football has taught me so much more than just what my assignments are on a particular play or how to block. I have learned to think about others first and realized how important working hard is. Being with all my friends, even sweating and bleeding with them, really made us bond as a group of hard-working young men who I know will succeed in life.

68. What is the main idea of the passage?

    A. How the author dislikes the game of football.

    B. When the author began to play football.

    C. How the author has changed his attitude to football.

    D. What sport the author likes best.

69. In the third paragraph, the underlined phrase “getting in shape” probably means “______”.

    A. becoming healthy                     B. designing the playground

    C. losing weight                         D. measuring the track

70. From the text we can infer ______.

   A. the author joined the football team with a clear aim

   B. football only brought the author certain assignments

   C. the author never lost heart when he met with difficulty

   D. the author worked all summer to get ready for the season

71. What did the author get from his season-ending injury?

   A. A good lesson about life.                    B. A good chance on the team.

   C. A good relationship with his partners.        D. A good rest as he expected.

A boy was born to a couple after they’d been married for eleven years. They were a loving couple and the boy was the apple of their eyes.

One morning, when the boy was around two years old, the husband saw a bottle open. He was late for work so he asked the wife to cap the bottle and put it in the cupboard. The mother, busy in the kitchen, totally forgot the matter.

The boy saw the bottle and playfully went to it and, interested in its color, drank it all. It happened to be a poisonous medicine meant for adults in small dosages (劑量). When the child fell down, the mother hurried him to the hospital, where he died. The mother was afraid. How would she face her husband?

When the heartbroken father came to the hospital and saw the dead child, he looked at his wife and said just four words, “I Love Your Darling”.

The child is dead. He can never be brought back to life. There’s no pointing in finding fault with the mother. Besides, if only he’d taken time to put the bottle away, this wouldn’t have happened. No point in blaming others. She had also lost her only child. What she needed at that moment was comfort from the husband. That is what he gave her.

Sometimes we spend time asking who is responsible or who’s to blame, whether in a relationship, or in a job and miss the warmth in human relationships we could receive by giving each other support.

After all, shouldn’t forgiving someone we love be the easiest thing in the world to do? Treasure what you have.

36. Why didn’t the husband put away the medicine bottle?

A. He forgot to do it.                                         B. He had no time to do it.

C. He was too lazy to do it.                                  D. He saw his wife do it.

37. In the opinion of the wife, which of the following is responsible for the child’s death?

  A. Her husband’s carelessness.                              B. The child’s bad behavior.

  C. Her own mistake.                                            D. The producer of the medicine.

38. When the wife heard “I Love You Darling”, she must felt _______.

  A. surprised                  B. angry                          C. afraid                          D. indifferent

39. What can be concluded from the passage?

  A. Take good care of our children.                         B. Never make serious mistakes.

  C. Learn to get along with others.                         D. Learn to forgive others.

When an earthquake hit a small town, many houses fell down. After the earthquake, all the newspapers reported many stories about some of the families who were in trouble.

One Sunday, when I was reading a newspaper, a special picture touched me. It gave the clothing sizes of each family member. I thought that this would be a good chance to teach my children to help those who were less lucky than themselves. I said to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and three-year-old Meghan, “We have so much, and these poor people now have nothing. We’ll share what we have with them.”

I filled a box with foods and clothes. While I was doing this, I encouraged the boys to choose their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched quietly as the boys took out their old toys and games and put them together. Then she walked away. A few minutes later she came back with Lucy, her much-loved doll. She put the doll on top of the other toys. “Oh, dear,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.” Meghan said, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.’

I looked at Maghan for a long moment. She taught me a lesson. It’s easy to give something that we don’t want any more, but harder to give what we cherish(珍愛), isn’t it?
