The need for a surgery operation, especially an emergency operation, almost always comes as a shock to the patient and his family.  Despite modern advances, most people still have an unreasonable fear of hospitals and operations.  Patients do not often believe they really need surgery-cutting into a part of the body as opposed to treatment with drugs.

In the early years of this century there was little specialization in surgery.  A good surgeon was capable of performing almost every operation that had been devised up to that time.  Today the situation is different.  Operations are now being carried out that were not even dreamed of 50 years ago. The heart can be safely opened and its valves repaired.  Blood vessels can be cleaned out, and broken ones mended or replaced.  Even part of the brain can be removed and still permit the patient to live.  However, not one surgeon is qualified to perform every type of the modern operation.

    The scope of surgery has increased remarkably.  Its safety has increased too.  Deaths from most operations are about 20% of what they were in 1910.  And due to the high success rate of operations nowadays, the hospital stay after surgery has been shortened to as little as a week for most major operations.  Most patients are out of bed on the day after the operation and may be back at work in two or three weeks.

    Many developments in modern surgery are almost incredible.  They include the replacement of damaged blood vessels with simulated ones made of plastic; the replacement of heart valves, the transplanting of tissues such as the lens of the eye and the lung machined to keep patients alive during long operations. All these things open a hopeful vista for the future of surgery.

However, still large is the gap between our dream for the future and current technology.  “Spare parts” surgery, the simple routine replacement of all worn-out organs by new ones, is still a dream of the distant future.  As yet, surgery is not ready for such miracles.  In the meantime, you can be happy if your doctor says to you, “yes, I think it is possible to operate on you for this condition.”

Ways to Deal with Conflict

In heated situations, we have a tendency to speak first and think after. This results in aggression which aggravates (使惡化) the conflict. Instead, pause before you speak, think about what the person has said to you, and respond appropriately. By giving yourself this time to think, you cool down, and you are less likely to speak with anger. A lot of the time, the other people may want to argue for the sake of arguing.

Everyone knows that people make mistakes because it’s human nature. However, it also seems to be human nature to fight acceptance of those mistakes. Conflicts often arise from mistakes, so it’s best to be upfront and honest about them. Identify the mistake that led to the conflict.

It is very easy to point the finger or play the blame game when trouble arises. As easy as it is, it is not useful or productive. The main concern is to find a solution to the problem, not to determine who was wrong. Listening is not as easy as someone thought. Even good listeners may recall only fifty percent of what they hear. To improve your listening skills, it’s important to understand what causes poor listening.

If you find it difficult to concentrate solely on what a speaker is saying, there’s good reason. The mind processes information much faster than a speaker can speak. The brain can process over 500 words per minute, while the average speaker talks as a rate of 124 to 250 words per minute. That means the mind can hear what’s being said and can think about something else at the same time.

If you have a negative idea about the speaker or the topic, you’ll find it difficult to listen attentively. Hostile or captive audiences often have more difficultly listening than do favorable or voluntary ones.

If a speaker speaks “above the heads” of an audience, people find it difficult to concentrate. Speakers who use unfamiliar words or who use incomplete explanations make it more difficult to listen. Speakers who “speak down” to audiences, failing to acknowledge what the audience already knows, also create mental blocks.

When people listen selectively, they simply block out what they don’t want to hear. For instance, many people have habits that are dangerous to their health, like smoking. However, they often choose to block out what a speaker says about health risks. They may listen to a speech and think that the speaker’s message applies to other people, not them. In other words, they hear what they want to hear and ignore what they don’t want to hear.
