There has been much disagreement over children’s education in recent years. One of the questions is whether children benefit more from boarding to schools or from going to day schools and staying with their parents after school. It is becoming a matter of concern for more and more people, especially for parents with only one child.

The people who are in favor of children going to boarding schools point out that a boarding school is an ideal place for building up children’s independence , which they seldom learn from their parents at home. Children who have the experience of going to boarding schools will come up with their own ways to problems they meet with instead of turning to their parents or others for help. What’s more, these children usually enjoy team work than the little emperors’ in many one-child families. They are generally more used to competing with others and will find it easier to fit modern society, which is full of competition when they grow up.

On the other hand, those who are against children going to boarding schools argue that these schools are usually much more expensive than ordinary day schools. Usually children from rich families gradually develop a sense of pride toward those from other families. And children at boarding schools have less time to be with their parents, which may lead to a gap between them and weaken family ties.

   The days of the hunter are almost over in India. This is partly because there is practically nothing left to kill, and partly because some steps have been taken, mainly by banning tiger-shooting, to protect those animals which still survive.

   Some people say that Man is naturally a hunter, I disagree with this view. Surely our earliest forefathers, who at first possessed no weapons, spent their time digging for roots, and were no doubt themselves often hunted by meat－eating animals.

I believe the main reason why the modern hunter kills is that he thinks people will admire his courage in over-powering dangerous animals. Of course, there are some who truly believe that the killing is not really the important thing, and that the chief pleasure lies in the joy of the hunt and the beauties of the wild countryside. There are also those for whom hunting in fact offers a chance to prove themselves and risk death by design; these men go out after dangerous animals like tigers, even if they say they only do it to rid the countryside of a threat. I can respect reasons like these, but they are clearly different from the need to strengthen your high opinion of yourself.

 The greatest big-game hunters expressed in their writings something of these finer motives(動機). One of them wrote:

“You must properly respect what you are after and shoot it cleanly and on the animal’s own territory(領地). You must fix forever in your mind all the wonders of that particular day. This is better than letting him grow a few years older to be attacked and wounded by his own son and eventually eaten, half alive, by other animals. Hunting is not a cruel and senseless killing— not if you respect the thing you kill, not if you kill to enrich your memories, not if you kill to feed your people.”

I can understand such beliefs, and can compare these hunters with those who hunted lions with spears(矛)and bravely caught them by the tail. But this is very different from many tiger-shoots I have seen , in which modern weapons were used. The so-called hunters fired from tall trees or from the backs of trained elephants. Such methods made tigers seem no more dangerous than rabbits.

  Sure, it’s good to get along with your teacher because it makes the time you spend in the classroom more pleasant.

   But really, there’s one super-important reason why you should get along with your teacher. When you do, “learning bursts right open,” says Evelyn Vuko, a longtime teacher who writes an education column called “Teacher Says” for the Washington Post Newspaper.

   In fact, kids who get along with their teachers not only learn more, but they’re more comfortable asking questions and getting extra help. This makes it easier to understand new material and do your best on tests. When you have this kind of relationship with a teacher, he or she can be someone to turn to with problems , such as problems with learning or school issues, such as bullying(欺負人).

   As a kid in a primary or middle school, you’re at a wonderful stage in your life. You’re like a sponge(海綿),able to soak up lots of new and exciting information. On top of that, you’re able to think about all this information in new ways. Your teacher knows that, and in most cases, is very excited to be the person who’s giving you all that material and helping you put it together, Remember, teachers are people, too, and they feel great if you’re open to what they’re teaching you. That’s why they wanted to be teachers in the first place— to teach!

   Some kids may be able to learn in any situation, whether they like the teacher or not, But most kids are sensitive(敏感的)to the way they get along with the teacher, and if things aren’t going well, they won’t learn as well and won’t enjoy being in class.

 A problem has been troubling me and I would like to share it with you. We seem to be living in a hugely difficult situation. And I don’t know if there is a solution. I am not even sure that it is a “problem”, but here it is.

   Our western societies praise winning. They do not consider “impasse(平局)”as a choice . A tie game, for example, is said to be like kissing you sister. It pleases no one, In most of our sports games, we have additional periods of time in order to avoid a “tie game”. In football it is called “sudden death” . Scientific experiments can sometimes go wrong and when they do the results may range from the disastrous to the troubling. One such experiment took place in South America about fifty years ago. Whether its final consequences will cause serious damage or nothing more than a small trouble still remains to be seen.

The story began in 1956 when an American scientist working in Brazil decided to solve the problem of increasing the productivity of that country’s bees. He imported a very active type of African bee from Tanzania and mated(交配) it with the more easygoing native variety to produce a new kind of bees. The new bees worked harder and produced twice as much honey. It seemed that Professor Kerr, for that was the scientist’s name, had a total success on his hands.

Then things began to go wrong. For some reason as yet unseen, but perhaps as a result of something in their environment, the new bees began to develop extremely attacking personalities. They became bad-tempered and easy to be angry, attacked the native bees and drove them from their living places.

But worse was to follow. Having taken over the countryside, the new bees. With their dangerous stings(叮), began to attack its neighbors —cats,dogs,horses, chickens and finally man himself. A long period of terror began that has so far killed a great number of animals and about 150 human beings.

This would have been enough if the bees had stayed in Brazil. But now they are on the move, heading northwards in countless millions towards Central and Notth America, and moving at the alarming speed of 200 miles a year. The countries that lie in their path are naturally worried because it looks as if nothing can be done to stop them.
