[1] If you go into the woods with friends who are older than you , stay with them. If you don’t , you may get lost . If you do get lost , though , this is what you should do.

[2] Sit down and stay where you are . Don’t try to find your friends—let them look for you . You can help them to find you by staying in one place.

[3] There is another way to help your friends or other people nearby to find you .              by shouting or whistling times again . Any signal given three times is a call for help.

[4] Keep up the shouting or whistling , always three times together . Then the people who hear you will know that you are not making noise for fun . They will let you know they have heard your signal. They will give two shouts , two whistles , or two gun shots . Whenever a signal is given twice it is an answer to a call for help.

[5] If you don’t think that you will be found before night comes , get some branches . Try to put them together and make a little house . Cover up the holes with leaves and grass.

[6] What would you do if you get hungry or need drinking water ? You have to leave your little branch house to look for a river . Don’t just walk away . make a trail for yourself so you can find your way back. Do this by picking off small branches and dropping them as you walk .

[7] The most important thing to do when you are lost is –STAY IN ONE PLACE.

When it comes to the process of knowing , understanding and learning something , knowledge is processed (經(jīng)加工的)information and , the way individuals select and store information leads to the formation of structure , which differs from one person to another and forms the basis for various jobs and potentials(潛力).

The knowledge structure , thought invisible , is extremely important for learning and for distinguishing a good learner from the rest . What matters most during a person’s scholarly career is not how many books one has read but whether and how well one’s knowledge structure has been established.

Knowledge can be fully functional in the cerebral cortex(大腦皮層)only if it has been weaved into a network of knowledge or else it will fall apart with little use.

The most important thing for a knowledge structure is classification which is a complex individual mental process where new information is compared ,clarified and linked with the previous one . As a result , the processed information has been filed into specific areas , such as politics , literature and so on , available for use at any time . It is possible , however , that someone may have read and experienced a lot but still acts like a beginner . This phenomenon may be explained purely from a possibility that the information he received may have been dislocated in his memory stack where there is no shortage of materials ; what he is actually lacking is the system of processing materials , resulting in failure to retrieve information when it is required.

Instead of always staying the same , the knowledge structure is in fact forever in the process of trans-formation in terms of shape , angle and quality, which may sometimes produce certain surprise to a person all at once . To make the most of one’s intelligence , therefore , the best way is to better one’s knowledge structure before everything else.

74. The underlined word “retrieve” probably means        .

A. get back        B. adapt to       C. keep off           D. forget about

HUMPBACK WHALE FACTS

Every humpback can be identified from the unique marking on the underside of its tail.

They can dive for up to 45 minutes and can reach depths of 600 feet.

Humpbacks can weigh two tons at birth . A full-grown whale can be 45 feet long and weigh up to 40 tons.

Nearly 40 percent of a humpback’s body weight is muscle.

They can see up to 400 feet underwater.

They can blow out air from their blowholes at a speed of 300 mph . Their lungs can hold 2,500 gallons of air.

When Lady Gage releases a catchy new single , it quickly goes around the world.

Now scientists have discovered the same thing happens with the songs of another exotic(外來的) creature the humpback whale.

The mammals become interested in new tunes just like people do ,and the most popular original whale songs spread globally like hit singles. The discovery has astonished marine experts who say it is the first time such a large., “ population-wide cultural exchange” has been seen in the animal kingdom.

Male humpback whales are famed for the loud , long and complex songs they make during the mating season . Scientists are unsure why the males sing . Some believe it is a way of advertising themselves to females , others that it allows migrating whales to stay in contact.

Each song lasts for 10 to 20 minutes and the males can sing continuously for 24 hours . At any period of time , all the males in a population sing the same song . But a study ,published in the journal Current Biology , shows that this song changes over time and spreads around the oceans . Dr Ellen Garland , of Queensland University , said :“Our findings reveal cultural change on a vast scale. Songs move like cultural ripples from one population to another , causing all males to change their song to a new version.”

Researchers recorded songs from six neighboring populations of whales in the Pacific over a decade. They found that new versions of the songs appear over time and always spread from west to east.

Dr Garland believes that a small number of whales may migrate to other populations carrying the new songs with them , or that they are heard by passing whales.

Dr Garland said, “We think this male search for song novelty(新奇) is in the hope of being that little bit different and perhaps more attractive to the opposite sex. ”

66. What can we learn from the facts of humpback whales?

A. They can travel at a speed of 300 miles per hour.

B. They always stay at a depth of 600 feet in the sea.

C. All of them differ from each other.

D. Approximately 40 tons of a grown humpback whale is muscle.

A. Prove the popularity of her hit singles

B. show the whale’s songs also spread quickly

C. emphasize humpbacks are as famous as her

D. provide readers with a new way to learn her songs

68. The word “population ” in this passage probably refers to .

A. the spreading of the humpback whales’ new versions of the tunes

B. the number of male humpback whales singing in the sea

C. the place where certain amounts of humpback whales live

D. the migration of humpback whales from one place to another

69. The discovery is very astonishing to experts , because it reveals .

A. the existence of cultural change

B. the reason why male humpbacks sing

C. the novelty of the songs of humpbacks

D. cultural exchange on a vast scale

70. According to the passage , Dr Garland wants to tell us .

A. all female humpbacks also change their song during the mating season

B. whales have their own tunes that spread around the world for a decade

C. whale’s songs always spred from east to west in the Pacific Deean

D. male humpbacks adopt new songs to make themselves unique and attractive

Traditional farming methods are keys to protecting a number of threatened bird species in the developing world , a study has found . Livestock grazing(家畜放牧)and qualities associated with arable farming(耕作農(nóng)業(yè))create environmental conditions that certain birds depend on for food , shelter and producing young .

But as industrial farming methods eliminate their living places , these species are threatened with extinction(絕種), said Hugh Wright , a researcher at the University of East Anglia , United Kingdom . “ There really is no hope for these species if industrial farming continues uncontrolled ,” he said . “ Although reintroducing traditional farming techniques has had success in conserving wildlife in Europe , conservation in the developing world has always focused on natural forest ecosystems and has paid little attention to where farming might be beneficial . ” The study found 29 bird species threatened by the disappearing of traditional agriculture in developing countries .

Farmers can also benefit from protecting biodiversity since it helps to prove the benefits of traditional agriculture and could prevent big agri-businesses from forcing farmers off their land . Also , by offering farmers money reward to continue these beneficial practices , governments can make sure that conservation and development move forward together .

Professor Tim Benton , from the University of Leeds , United Kingdom , agreed that traditional agricultural methods are a valuable conservation tool . But he also said that “ land sparing ” —where some areas are farmed while others are left for conservation— can lead to more wildlife and better crop production . “ There is no one strategy(策略), but a ‘ middle ground ’ that combines land sparing and traditional farming methods to suit local conditions could be the best conservation strategy ,” he added . “ Farmers need to assess which species they have , how possible it is to protect them , what it will cost and social issues as well before coming up with a conservation strategy for an area .”

56. How do traditional farming methods benefit threatened bird species ?

A. By providing them with higher quality food .

B. By providing them with a natural living environment .

C. By forcing them to live in limited space in large groups .

D. By making them more competitive in the struggle for survival .

57. The underlined word “ eliminate ” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “       ” .

A. stay away from     B. make room for     C. pay attention to     D. get rid of

58. According to the passage , biodiversity protection is beneficial to farmers in that it       .

A. allows them to remain on their land

B. speeds up the development of agriculture

C. saves them time and money spent on farming

D. offers them money reward to make them stop farming

59. What can we infer from the last paragraph ?

A. More wildlife is sure to affect crop production .

B. Land sparing may result in a fall in crop production .

C. Conservation strategies should differ from place to place .

D. Tim Benton thinks little of traditional agricultural methods .

60. In which part of a magazine can the passage most probably read ?

A. Health .    B. Environment .     C. Culture & fashion .    D. Science & technology .
