While some scientists overlook the existence of a sixth sense for danger, a new research from Washington University in St. Louis has identified a brain area that clearly acts as an early warning system and helps us adjust our behavior to avoid dangerous situations.

"Our brains are better at picking up not obvious warning signs than we previously thought," said Joshua Brown, PhD, a research associate in psychology in the Feb. 18 issue of the journal Science.

The findings offer exact scientific evidence for a new way to form a concept of the complex control processes taking place in and around the ACC, a brain area located near the top of the frontal lobes(耳垂) and  along the walls that divide the left and right hemispheres(大腦半球).

"In the past, we found activity in the ACC when people had to make a difficult decision, or after they make a mistake," Brown said. "But now we find that this brain area can actually learn to recognize when you might make a mistake, even before a difficult decision has to be made. So the ACC appears to act as an early warning system—— it learns to warn us in advance when our behavior might lead to a negative outcome, so that we can be more careful and avoid making a mistake."

By providing a clearer picture of the cognitive mechanisms(認知結(jié)構(gòu)) by which we self monitor and control our behavior, the study is an important step in efforts to develop more effective treatments for mental illnesses. It also provides a new way of understanding inappropriate behaviors that often accompany mental illnesses.

"Our results suggest how injury of the ACC mechanisms can lead to breakdowns in the early warning system, so that the brain fails to stop or control inappropriate behavior ahead of time," said Brown. "On the other hand, in those persons with mental disorder, the ACC might warn of an upcoming problem even when no problem is in the existence."

Known to be an important part of the brain's control system, the ACC is believed to help adjust between cold, hard, fact-based reasoning and emotional responses, such as love, fear or expectation.

68. According to the passage, the ACC____________.

A. refers to the sixth sense for danger           B. deals with obvious warning situations

C. connects the left and right hemispheres       D. sends warning messages in advance

69. The new research is beneficial because it ________ .

A. provides a new way of avoiding mistakes

B. adjusts emotional responses in time of danger

C. helps find better treatments for mental illnesses

D. assists people in predicting and avoiding danger

70. The new research helps us understand _________.

A. why we are likely to make mistakes when the ACC is badly injured

B. why people with mental illnesses usually have so many strange behaviors

C. how the ACC works when something dangerous happens

D. how our brain warns us of failure in advance

Do you have any skiing equipment you no longer need? A ski school in the far north of India could put it to good use.

In March we published a photo story about the extraordinary Zsnskar region in northern India, which is cut off from the outside world for more than seven months of the year, and only accessible (可通行的)via a frozen river. We also included information about the limited use of skiing in the region and the recent creation of the Zanskar Ski School:

“Despite the difficulties of travelling through the region when the snow comes, skiing hasn’t traditionally been used as a means of transport by the locals, largely because trees don't grow here, so there is little in the way of raw materials from which to make skis.In 1995, a group of British scientists in the region noticed the lack of skis and one of them returned to set up the Zanskar Ski School in Padam. The school provides lessons for a small fee and rents skis to the local people. Among the benefits that the school hopes to bring are improved education—children often find it difficult to get to school through the deep snow—and the possibility of offering ski tours to tourists in the future. So far, more than 300 local people have received training, and local doctors and policemen regularly borrow skis.”

But what we weren't able to include in the article is that the ski school is always on the look out for old skiing equipment—particularly of a size suitable for children—and, I thought. Now the European ski season is drawing to a close, there might be a few of you out there who have some old equipment you'd like to see go to a good home.If that's the ease you can get in touch with the school via their website www.zanskarski school.org.

63. What's the purpose in writing the text?

A. To ask people to give away their skis to the school

C. To appeal to more locals to attend the school

D. To raise money to develop this area

64. The local people don't use skiing to go about because             .

A. it is against the local custom

B. trees are in the way of the skiing route

C. they don't have the wood to make skis

D. it is dangerous to go skiing in this region

65. The Zanskar Ski School          .

A. has donated money to the local community

B. makes it easier for the students to attend school

C. provides special training to the tourists

D. has borrowed many skis from Europe

66. Who would be the most helpful to the school now?

A. Locals in Zanskar region.

B. Students in the Zanskar Ski School.

C. People having old skiing equipment.

D. Tavellers enjoying skiing.

67. What can be the best title for the text?

A. An extraordinary region in India                   B. A popular sport—skiing

In the 1960s Walt Disney pictured in the mind a future utopian city with underground roads and a climate-controlled round roof. The real community of Celebration, Florida, built in 1999, applies the social and environmental goals of both Disney and the New Urbanism movement.

Disney and the New Urbanism have imagined communities that promote social and local communication. Celebration has a central Market Street district to reduce traffic and encourage social contacts. The idea is that if the downtown area is neatly and closely ranked, people will walk and meet their neighbors. Downtown events like arts festivals also bring citizens together. Narrow, tree-lined streets are "traffic calm"——with slower speed limits——to encourage bicycling and walking.

Moreover, housing in Celebration includes both single- and multi-family houses that encourages socialization. Apartment buildings are located close to downtown, and houses are built close together with small yards. They feature entrance halls to encourage citizens to socialize.

"Many aspects of that kind of design are really aimed at maximizing social communication between citizens, not just on the streets but also in community institutions that are very much a part of public life there," says Andrew Ross, a New York University professor who lived in Celebration for one year.

Utopian communities such as Celebration are also designed with environmental protection in mind. The town itself is built on 4,900 acres surrounded by a 4,700 acre protected greenbelt. The greenbelt parks, and common areas accommodate native wildlife and animals.

High-rise office and apartment buildings provide close office and living space in a small geographic area in order to reduce urban sprawl, the spread of today's cities onto nature areas.

Buildings also minimize environmental influence by using cooling; and electric systems with insulated (絕緣的;隔熱的) glass, cooling towers, and energy-saving lamps.

"The town more or less borrows very heavily from New Urbanist principles...to create environmentally friendly alternatives to sprawl and to create communities around people rather than vehicles," Ross said.

59. Celebration mentioned in the passage is a ___________ .

A. city offering living spaces                     B. community promoting socialization

C. special occasion in the market                  D. downtown area with high buildings

60. The purpose of holding art festivals mentioned in Paragraph 2 is to _________ .

A. exhibit art works                                     B. attract artists for profits

C. encourage communication                    D. reduce downtown traffic

A. expansion             B. organization          C. restriction           D. exploration

62. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?

When Flora Kahlo's paintings were on show in London, a poet described her paintings as "a ribbon (絲帶) around a bomb". Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her Lime. Sadly, she is actually a much bigger name today than she was during her time.

Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City, Kahlo suffered from polio(小兒麻痹癥 )at the age of seven. Her spine(脊柱) became bent as she grew older. Then, in 1925, her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident. Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering, Kahlo taught herself to paint.

In 1929, she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist. Rivera's strong influences on Kahlo's style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s, known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.

Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s, even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953. For more than a decade after her death in 1954, Kahlo's works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.

55. What does the phrase “a much bigger name” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?

A. a far better artist B a much more famous person

C. a much stronger person D. a far more gifted artist

56. The terrible pain Kahlo suffered was caused by ______.

A. back injuries B. her bent spine C. polio D. the operations she had

57. Kahlo's style had become increasingly independent since the _________.

A. 1930s B. 1970s C. 1950s D. 1940s

58. What is author's attitude toward Kahlo?

A. Devotion B. Encouragement C. Ironic D. Sympathy

Do you still remember the interesting question: why did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.

Most people know this joke. But recently, some people have been much more concerned with how the grizzly bear and mountain lion can cross the road.

Millions of animals die each year on US roads, the Federal Highway Administration reports. In fact, only about 80 ocelots, an endangered wild cat exist in the US today. The main reason? Road kill.

“Ecopassages” may help animals cross the road without being hit by cars. They are paths both over and under roads. "These ecopassages can be extremely useful, so that wildlife can avoid human conflicts," said Jodi Hilty of the Wildlife Conservation Society.

But do animals actually use the ecopassages? The answer is yes. Paul Beier of Northern Arizona University found foot marks left by mountain lions on an ecopassage that went under a highway. This showed that the lion used the passage.

Builders of some ecopassages try to make them look like a natural part of an area by planting trees on and around them. Animals seem to be catching on. Animals as different as salamanders and grizzly bears are using the bridges and underpasses.

The next time you visit a park or drive through an area with a lot of wildlife, look around.

You might see an animal overpass!

51. The writer uses the example of "ocelots" to show that __________.

A. wild animals have become more dangerous

B. the driving conditions have improved greatly

C. the measure for protecting wildlife fails to work

D. an increasing number of animals are killed in road accidents

52. From the news story, we know an ecopassage is __________ .

A. an underground path for cars B. a fence built for the safety of the area

C. a bridge for animals to get over a river D. a pass for animals to cross the road

53. When the writer says that animals seem "to be catching on", he means _______.

A. animals begin to realize the dangers on the road

B. animals begin to learn to use ecopassages

C. animals are crossing the road in groups

D. animals are increasing in number

54. The writer asks visitors and drivers to look around when traveling because .

A. wild animals may attack cars B. wild animals may jam the road

C. they may see wild animals in the park D. they may see wild animals on ecopassages
