My uncle lives in the countryside. I still remember the days when I paid a visit to him in last summer. I made friend with many boys of my age here. All of them were easy to get along with. They taught me how to swim in the river but I taught themselves English. Some boys was left behind to live with their grandparents because their parents went to cities to making a living. Though they lived hard life, they studied hard. How I hope I can help them as much as possibly! Now I often kept in touch with them by writing letters.

Spring is coming, and it is time for those about to graduate to look for jobs. Competition is tough, so job seekers must carefully consider their personal choices. Whatever we are wearing, our family and friends may accept us, but the workplace may not.

A high school newspaper editor said it is unfair for companies to discourage visible tattoos (紋身)nose rings, or certain dress styles. It is true you can’t judge a book by its cover, yet people do “cover” themselves in order to convey (傳遞)certain messages. What we wear, including tattoos and nose rings, is an expression of who we are. Just as people convey messages about themselves with their appearances, so do companies. Dress standards exist in the business world for a number of reasons, but the main concern is often about what customers accept.

Others may say how to dress is a matter of personal freedom, but for businesses it is more about whether to make or lose money. Most employers do care about the personal appearances of their employees (雇員),because those people represent the companies to their customers.

As a hiring manager I am paid to choose the people who would make the best impression on our customers. There are plenty of well-qualified candidates, so it is not wrong to reject someone who might disappoint my customers. Even though I am open-minded, I can’t expect all our customers are.

There is nobody to blame but yourself if your set of choices does not match that of your preferred employer. No company should have to change to satisfy a candidate simply because he or she is unwilling to respect its standards, as long as its standards are legal.

67. Which of the following is the newspaper editor’ opinion according to Paragraph 2?

A. People’s appearances carry messages about themselves.

B. Candidates with tattoos or nose rings should be fairly treated.

C. Customers’ choices influence dress standards in companies.

D. Strange dress styles should not be encouraged in the workplace.

68. What can be inferred from the text?

A. Candidates have to wear what companies prefer for an interview.

B. Hiring managers make the best impression on their candidates.

C. Companies sometimes have to change to respect their candidates.

D. What to wear is not a matter of personal choice for companies.

69. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?

A. Appearances Matter                       B. Personal Choices Matter

C. Employees Matter                     D. Hiring Managers Matter

70. The author’s attitude towards strange dress styles in the workplace may best be described as___________.

A. enthusiastic        B. positive     C. negative    D. sympathetic

One hot night last July, when our new baby wouldn’t or couldn’t sleep, I tried everything I could think of ---a warm bottle, songs gentle rocking. Nothing would settle him. Guessing that I had a long night ahead of me, I brought a portable TV into his room, figuring that watching the late movie was as good a way as any to kill of the hours till dawn To my surprise, as soon as the TV lit up, the baby quieted right down, his little eyes focused brightly on the tube. Not to waste an opportunity for sleep, I then tiptoed out of the room, leaving him to watch the actors celebrate John Bellushi's forty-fifth birthday.

My wife and I heard none of the baby that night, and the next morning when I went into his room, I found him still watching TV himself.

I found in my baby's behavior a symbol of the new generation. My wife and I had given him some books to examine, but he merely spit upon them. When we read to him, he did not feel comfortable. And so it is in the schools. We find that our students don't read and they look down upon reading and scold those of us who teach it. All they want to do is watch TV. After this experience with the baby, however, I have reached a conclusion: “Let them watch it!” If television is that much more attractive to children than books, why should we fight about it? Let them watch it all they want!

60.Why did the author bring a TV set into his son's room?

  A. To make his son keep quiet.

  B. To spend the night by watching TV programs.

  C. In order not to let his son feel lonely.

  D. To make his son go to sleep as soon as possible.

61.The baby's reaction to the TV program was _______ .

  A. unexpected           B. encouraging          C. exciting                D. nervous

62.From this passage we know that the author is           .

      A.a(chǎn) doctor              B.a(chǎn) reporter            C.a(chǎn)n editor              D.a(chǎn) teacher
