Dear Jacob,
Glad to hear from you. I would love to tell you something about my new invention, that can catch snakes but not harm them.
First I bought an ice-cream maker making of steel. Between the outside and the inside wall of the bowl there is some jelly, which freeze when cooled. I put the bowl into the fridge. Then in the evening I placed a frozen bowl in the snakes’ habitat and some ice cubes on top of the bowl to keep cool. Finally I covered the whole thing with a large bucket. The next morning when I removed the bucket or the bowl, I found the snakes very sleepily. I collected the passive snakes using a net and released it all back into the wild.
What do you think of my invention? Glad to hear from your advice. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Caroline

The British summer is extremely beautiful. Trees, flowers, birds and butterflies make the whole country like a big garden. However, many British people have noticed that butterflies have been gradually disappearing from this picturesque scenery during the past several years. What has happened to them?
Butterfly Conservation, a charity in the UK, is running a survey to help answer this question. The result is more serious than people expected. According to the survey, among 59 butterfly species found in Britain, more than three quarters of them are suffering a declining population, including the most popular ones. What’s more, half of all butterfly species are in the danger of dying out. Some common species such as the small Tortoiseshell butterfly and the Wall butterfly are dropping dramatically. The latter cannot even be seen in many parts of central and southern England. The Blue butterfly was commonly seen in the south. However, it has started colonizing(遷徙至)Edinburgh in the past few years.
The numbers of butterflies have dropped to a record low in the past three years largely because the summer in the UK is getting cooler and their habitat is also worsening. Fortunately Britain is experiencing a long hot summer this year compared to the last few summers. Conservationists believe the warm weather will bring some benefit to the butterflies.
Sir David Attenborough, president of Butterfly Conservation, said: “Large quantities of butterflies tell us that all is well with nature. When they decline it’s a warning that other wildlife will be soon _______ .”
The survey is still going on. The public are also encouraged to keep track of the UK’s butterfly population. The organizers hope the survey will help raise public awareness of the value of butterflies in the UK. Butterflies give an indication of the well-being of nature and the environment.

In times of economic crisis. Americans turn to their families for support. If the Great Depression is any guide, we may see a drop in our sky-high divorce rate. But this won't necessarily represent an increase in happy marriages. In the long run, the Depression weakened American families, and the current crisis will probably do the same.
We tend to think of the Depression as a time when families pulled together to survive huge job losses, By 1932. when nearly one-quarter of the workforce was unemployed, the divorce rate had declined by around 25% from 1929 But this doesn't mean people were suddenly happier with their marriages. Rather, with incomes decreasing and insecure jobs, unhappy couples often couldn't afford to divorce. They feared neither spouse could manage alone.
Today, given the job losses of the past year, fewer unhappy couples will risk starting separate households, Furthermore, the housing market meltdown will make it more difficult for them to finance their separations by selling their homes.
After financial disasters family members also tend to do whatever they can to help each other and their communities, A 1940 book,The Unemployed Man and His Family, described a family in which the husband firstly reacted to losing his job "with tireless search for work. "He was always active, looking for odd jobs to do.
The problem is that such an impulse(沖動) is hard to sustain. Across the country, many similar families were unable to maintain the first boost in morale(士氣). For some, the hardships of life without steady work eventually overwhelmed their attempts to keep their families together. The divorce rate rose again during the rest of the decade as the recovery took hold.
Millions of American families may now be in the first stage of their responses to the current crisis, working together and supporting one another through the early months of unemployment.
Today's economic crisis could well generate a similar number of couples whose relationships have been irreparably(無法彌補地)ruined. So it's only when the economy is healthy again that we'll begin to see just how many broken families have been created.
46. In the first stage, the current economic crisis is likely to __________.
A. tear many troubled families apart B. contribute to improving family ties
C. bring about a drop in the divorce rate D. cause a lot of conflicts in the family
47. In the Great Depression many unhappy couples close to stick together because
A. starting a new family would be hard B. they expected things would turn better
C. they wanted to better protect their kids D. living separately would be too costly
48. In addition to job losses. What stands in the way of unhappy couples getting a divorce?
A. Mounting family debts B. A sense of insecurity
C. Difficulty in getting a loan D. Falling housing prices
49. What will the current economic crisis eventually do to some married couples?
A. It will force them to pull their efforts together
B. It will undermine their mutual understanding
C. It will help strengthen their emotional bonds
D. It will irreparably damage their relationship
50. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The economic recovery will see a higher divorce rate
B. Few couples can stand the test of economic hardships
C. A stable family is the best protection against poverty.
D. Money is the foundation of many a happy marriage

What makes Americans spend nearly half their food dollars on meals away from home? The answers lie in the way Americans live today. During the first few decades of the twentieth century, canned and other convenience foods freed the family cook from full-time duty at the kitchen range.
Then, in the 1940s, work in the wartime defense plants took more women out of the home than ever before, setting the pattern of the working wife and mother. Unless family members pitch in with food preparation, women are not fully liberated from that chore.
It’s easier to pick up a bucket of fried chicken on the way home from work or take the family out for pizzas or burgers than to start opening cans or heating up frozen dinners after a long, hard day. Also nowadays, the rising divorce rate means that there are more single working parents with children to feed. And many young adults and elderly people, as well as unmarried and divorced mature people, live alone rather than as a part of a family unit and don't want to bother cooking for one. Fast food is appealing because it is fast, it doesn’t require any dressing up, it offers a “fun” break in the daily routine, and the fee seems small. It can be eaten in the car-sometimes picked up at a drive-in window without even getting out-or on the run. Even if it is brought home to eat, there will never be any dirty dishes to wash because of the handy disposable wrappings. Children, especially, love fast food because it's finger food, no struggling with knives and forks, no annoying instructions from adults about table manners.
41. Americans enjoy fast food mainly because ________.
A. it can be eaten in the car B. it is much more tasty than home-made food
C. one only uses his fingers while eating it D. it is time-saving and convenient
42. It can be inferred that children ________.
A. want to have freedom at table
B. wash dishes after each meal
C. are not good at using forks and knives while eating
D. take eating time as a fun break
43. Many Americans are eating out and not cooking at home nowadays because ________.
A. they want to make a change after eating the same food for years at home
B. the food made outside home tastes better than food cooked at home
C. many of them live alone or don’t like taking trouble to cook
D. American women refuse to cook at home due to woman's liberation movement
44. According to the text, a drive-in window is a ________.
A. car window from which you can see the driver
B. window in the restaurant from which you get your meal in the car
C. place where you check the mechanic condition of your car
D. entrance where you return the used plates after eating
45. The expression “pitch in with” (Line 2, Para. 2.) probably means________.
A. complain B. enjoy C. help D. deny

Sports shoes that work out whether their owner has done enough exercise to warrant time in front of the television have been devised in the UK.
The shoes- named Square Eyes- contain an electronic pressure sensor and a tiny computer chip to record how many steps the wearer has taken in a day. A wireless transmitter passes the information to a receiver connected to a television, and this decides how much evening viewing time the wearer deserves, based on the day’s efforts.
The design was inspired by a desire to fight against the rapidly ballooning waistlines among British teenagers, says Gillian Swan, who developed Square Eyes as a final year design project at Brunel University in London, UK. “We looked at current issues and childhood overweight really stood out,” she says. “And I wanted to tackle that with my design.”
Once a child has used up their daily allowance gained through exercise, the television automatically switches off. And further time in front of the TV can only be earned through more steps.
Swan calculated how exercise should translate to television time using the recommended daily amounts of both. Health experts suggest that a child take 12,000 steps each day and watch no more than two hours of television. So, every 100 steps recorded by the Square Eyes shoes equals precisely one minute of TV time.
Existing pedometers(計步器) normally clip onto a belt or slip into a pocket and keep count of steps by measuring sudden movement. Swan says these can be easily tricked into recording steps through shaking. But her shoe has been built to be harder for lazy teenagers to cheat. “It is possible, but it would be a lot of effort,” she says. “That was one of my main design considerations.”
38. Which of the following is true of Square Eyes shoes?
A. They regulate a child’s evening TV viewing time.
B. They determine a child’s daily pocket money.
C. They have raised the hot issue of overweight.
D. They contain information of the receiver.
39. What is stressed by health experts in their suggestion?
A. The exact number of steps to be taken.
B. The precise number of hours spent on TV.
C. The proper amount of daily exercise and TV time.
D. The way of changing steps into TV watching time.
40. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Smart Shoes Decide on Television Time
B. Smart Shoes Guarantee More Exercise
C. Smart Shoes Measure Time of Exercise
D. Smart Shoes Stop Childhood Overweight

“In only six days I lost seven pounds of weight.”
“Two full inches in the first three days!”
These are the kinds of statements used in magazine, newspaper, radio and television ads, promising new shapes and new looks to those who buy the medicine or the device of such product. The promoters of products say they can shape the legs, slim the face, smooth wrinkles, or in some other way to beauty or desirability.
Often such products are nothing more than money-making things for their promoter. The result they produce are questionable, and some are dangerous to health.
To understand how these products can be legally promoted to the public, it is necessary to understand something of the laws covering their regulation. If the product is a drug, FDA(Food Drug Administration) can require proof under the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act that it is safe and effective before it is put on the market. But if the product is a device, FDA has no authority to require premarketing proof of safety or effectiveness. If a product already on the market is a danger to health, FDA can request the producer or distributor to remove it from the market voluntarily, or it can take legal action, including seizure (查封) of the product.
One notable case a few years ago involved an electrical device called the Relaxacisor, which had been sold for reducing the waistline. The Relaxacisor produced electrical shocks to the body through contact pads. FDA took legal action against the distributor to stop the sale of the device on the grounds that it was dangerous to health and life.
Obviously, most of the devices on the market have never been the subject of court proceedings (法律訴訟),and new devices appear continually. Before buying, it is up to the consumer to judge the safety or effectiveness of such items.
35. FDA can ask for the proof of safety and effectiveness of a product ______.
A. if it is a drug B. if it is a device
C. if its consumers make complaints D. if its distributors challenge FDA’s authority
36. The Relaxacisor is mentioned as______.
A. a product which was designed to produce electricity
B. a product whose distributor was involved in a legal case
C. a successful advertisement of a beauty product
D. an example of a quality beauty product
37. The author intends to _____
A. make consumers aware of the promoters’ false promises
B. show the weakness of the law on product safety
C. give advice on how to keep young and beautiful
D. introduce the organization of FDA
