About a year ago, a couple with three children moved into the apartment next door to mine. I never heard any noise from the children, but the parents were always yelling at the kids.
We often met in the hallway when we were coming or going. I always spoke, but the only answer I got was a “Hello” from the four-year-old girl.
One afternoon when I returned, they were just coming out of their apartment and the little girl was holding the door open for the others. I remained in the car doing unnecessary things. But when I looked up I saw the little girl was still holding the door open, waiting for me. I hurried as much as I could and thanked her.
I was really touched by her act of kindness. That afternoon I was at the K-Mart and I bought a white Teddy bear for her. The next day, there was a knock on the door and it was the little girl and her father. She was very proud of the bear and thanked me like I had never been thanked before.
Now when we meet in the hall, we all speak in a friendly manner. As time passes, I don’t hear that yelling as often as before.
Last night we had about four inches of snow. I looked out at my car and wondered how I was going to keep my doctor’s appointment. I went out to remove the snow. But when I opened my front door, I found my car was there with all the snow removed. You couldn’t imagine how I felt at that moment. I thanked that family in my heart.
Isn’t it amazing that a small kind act of a four-year-old girl could change so many things for the better? My guardian angel says that good things come from small acts.
58. Why did the writer hurry as much as he could in the third paragraph?
A. Because he didn’t want the little girl to wait too long.
B. Because he thought of something very important.
C. Because he had a very important appointment.
D. Because he was afraid the little girl’s parents would yell at him.
59. Which of the following is CORRECT according to the passage?
A. The children were very naughty and often made their parents angry.
B. Life must be very hard for the parents next door as they had a large family to support.
C. The writer put off the appointment with his doctor because of the heavy snow.
D. The little girl’s kind act changed the relationship between the writer and her family.
60. The right time order of these events in the passage may be ______.
① I bought a white Teddy bear for the four-year-old little girl.
② A new family moved into the building next to my door.
③ The four-year-old little girl held the door open for me.
④ The father came with the little girl and thanked me.
⑤ We speak to each other now in a friendly manner.
A. ②-③-①-④-⑤ B. ②-④-①-③-⑤

London Underground
The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease(減輕) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.
The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays (推遲), but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.
54. What led the British government to build the London Underground?
A. Traffic jams and pollution.
B. Population and pollution.
C. Overcrowding and traffic jams.
D. The poverty and traffic jams.
55. How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem?
A. It made the tunnels larger.
B. It put fans in the tunnels.
C. It cleaned the chemical gases in the tunnels.
D. It reduced the number of passengers riding in the train.
56. How many passengers did the world’s first subway carry in its first year?
A. 9,000 B. 90,000 C. 9,000,000 D. 90,000,000
57. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. To relocate the workers’ homes outside London, the government built the subway.
B. There were not so many problems and delays when the first subway was built.
C. The subway greatly eased the pressure of traffic.
D. There were not enough seats for the passengers the first day the subway opened.

America is growing older. Fifty years ago, only 4 out of every 100 people in the United States were 65 or order. Today, 10 out of every 100 Americans are over 65. The aging of the population will affect American society in many ways---education, medicine and business. It doesn’t surprise us to hear of a 29-year-old university president or a 35-year-old grandmother, or a 70-year-old man who has become a father for the first time. Public ideas are changing.
Many people say, “I am much younger than my mother or my father was at my age.” No one says “Act your age” any more. We’ve stop looking with surprise at older people, who act in youthful ways.

What would you do if you find out your best friend cheated in a maths exam? Here are a few choices:
* Tell him you know and will keep it a secret.
* Tell him it’s not right and ask him not to do it again.
* Learn from him.
