What makes one person more intelligent than another? What makes one person a genius, like the brilliant Albert Einstein, and another person a fool? Are people born intelligent or stupid, or is intelligence the result of where and how you live? These are very old questions and the answers to them are still not clear.
We know, however, that just being born with a good mind is not enough. In some ways, the mind is like a leg or an arm muscle. It needs exercise. Mental (done with the mind) exercise is particularly important for young children. Many child psychologists (心理學(xué)家) think that parents should play with their children more often and give them problems to think about. The children are then more likely to grow up bright and intelligent. If, on the other hand, children are left alone a great deal with nothing to do, they are more likely to become dull and unintelligent.
Parents should also be careful with what they say to young children. According to some psychologists, if parents are always telling a child that he or she is a fool or an idiot, then the child is more likely to keep doing silly and foolish things. So it is probably better for parents to say very positive things to their children, such as “That was a very clever thing you did” or “You are such a smart child”.
36. The words “intelligent” and “brilliant” in the first paragraph probably mean_______ while “dull” in the second paragraph means _______.
A. bright and splendid; slow in thinking and understanding B. pretty and handsome; ordinary-looking
C. great and important; common D. hopeful and helpful; careless
37. According to the context we can guess that a genius is ______ while an idiot is _______.

B. a strong person; a weak person
C. a highly intelligent person; a foolish or weak-minded person
D. a famous person; an ordinary person
38. A person ________ is more likely to become a genius.
A. whose parents are clever B. often thinking about difficult problems
C. often helped by his parents and teachers D. born with a good brain and putting it into active use
39. It is better for parents ________.
A. to praise and encourage their children more often
B. to be hard on their children
C. to leave their children alone with nothing to do
D. to give their children as much help as possible
40. Which of the following is NOT true according to the article?
A. Parents play an important part in their children’s growth.
B. The less you use your mind the duller you may become.
C. Intelligence is obviously the result of where and how you live.
D. What makes a person bright or stupid is still under discussion.

You may think birthdays mean only cake, presents, and a sweet song—”Happy Birthday”.
However, there are many varieties of birthday celebrations. In the West, many birthday traditions come from an ancient belief that bad spirits showed up on a person’s birthday. To drive troublemaking spirits away, friends would visit each other on their birthdays. Today, people still get together for birthday parties. But around the world, birthdays are celebrated in many different ways.
In eastern Canada, children get their noses covered with butter on their birthdays. The butter is supposed to make children too slippery for bad luck to stick to them. Irish people lift birthday children upside down and hit them lightly on the floor for every year of their age. Mexico also has a unique birthday tradition. A paper-made animal is filled with candy and toys and hung from the ceiling. The birthday child with his eyes covered then tries to hit the animal with a stick until it bursts open.

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different than the other kids'. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace(丟臉) because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law(兒童勞動法). She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.
She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background(背景), I'm now trying to bring up my three children. I'm filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.
