Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with vitamins(維生素) to water without vitamins, even though there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water bottles. When a sweet smell was added to the vitamins-enriched water, the rats did seem to develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were changed to the clear water. In time(最后), however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.
In experiments, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a room with a wide choice of baby food before them. They were given whatever food they pointed to or appeared interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating habits, but that over a period of time they managed to choose a well-balanced diet.
So in choosing food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what's best for them. Clearly, there is a kind of “body wisdom”, which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by old habits. Some people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how many they eat seem to be greatly influenced by what is going around them.
67 In the experiment on rats, a sweet smell was added to the rats’ drinking water to .
A. encourage rats to drink vitamins-enriched water
B. test whether rats know which drink is good for them
C. find out rats’ preference in flavor(口味)
D. show the vitamins are tasteless
68. Talking about eating habits, babies and rats are just like each other because .
A. both have the wisdom to choose a balanced diet
B. both prefer flavored food and drink
C. both have the same eating habits
D. both develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors
69 . In the experiment mentioned in the second paragraph, babies were .
A. given many choices of drinks B. given all kinds of baby food
C. placed and fed in a hospital D. trained to select a balanced diet
70. According to the passage, grown-up people’s eating habits differ from those of babies in that (因為) _______ .
A. they know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health
B. they usually cannot say no to all kinds of delicious foods
C. they have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns
D. their eating habits have much to do with the social and cultural customs (文化習俗)

Some people make you feel comfortable when they are around. You spend an hour with them and feel as if you have known them half your life. These people have something in common. And once we know what it is, we can try to do it ourselves.
How is it done? Here are several skills that good talkers have. If you follow the skills, they’ll help you put people at their ease, and make friends with them quickly.
First of all, good talkers ask questions. Almost anyone, no matter how shy he is, will answer a question. One well-known businesswoman says, “At business lunches, I always ask people what they did that morning. It’s a common question, but it will get things going.” From there you can move on to other matters—sometimes to really personal questions. And how he answers will let you know how far you can go.
Second, once good talkers have asked questions, they listen to the answers. This point seems clear, but it isn’t. Your questions should have a point and help to tell what sort of pers on you are talking to. And to find out, you really have to listen carefully and attentively.
Real listening at least means some things. First it means not to change the subject of conversation. If someone sticks to one topic, you can take it as a fact that he’s really interested in it. Real listening also means not just listening to words, but to tones of voice. If the voice sounds dull, then, it’s time for you to change the subject.
Finally, good talkers know well how to deal with the occasion of parting. If you’re saying good-bye, you may give him a firm handshake and say, “I’ve really enjoyed meeting you.” If you want to see that person again, don’t keep it a secret. Let people know what you feel, and they may walk away feeling as if they’ve known you half their life.
63. Asking questions might be a quite good and suitable way _______.
A. for you to make more and more new friends
B. to get the conversation going smoothly
C. to begin your business talks
D. for you to make a deep and lasting impression on others
64. After having asked somebody a question, it’ll be polite of you to _______.
A. make clear what kind of person he is
B. wait quietly and patiently for his answer
C. listen to his reply attentively
D. go on asking him more questions
65. Generally speaking, good talkers are persons who _______.
A. are good at making any topic interesting
B. never talk too much or too little
C. always speak in a gentle way
D. know how and when they should change the topic of the talk
66. If you really take delight in meeting someone again, _______.
A. it seems necessary for you to let him know it
B. you may take him as your lifelong trustworthy friend
C. it’s proper for you to give him a second handshake
D. it’ll be helpful for you to have further understanding of him

Why do people drink too much, eat too much, smoke cigarettes or take drugs? What’s to blame for all the bad behavior? Most people would say that, while these self-destructive (自我毀滅的) acts can have many root causes, they all have one obvious thing in common: they are all examples of failures of self-control, lacking the will power(意志力) to resist them.
According to a recent study, however, if you really think about it, something about that simple answer doesn’t quite make sense. In fact, it turns out that sometimes it’s having will power that really gets you into trouble.
Think back to the time you took your very first sip (啜飲) of beer. Disgusting, wasn’t it? When my father gave me my first taste of beer as a teenager, I wondered why anyone would voluntarily drink it. And smoking? No one enjoys their first cigarette — it tastes awful. So even though smoking, and drinking alcohol or coffee, can become temptation (誘惑) you need will power to resist, they never, ever start out that way.
Just getting past those first horrible experiences actually requires a lot of self-control. Ironically (諷刺的是), only those who can control themselves well, rather than give in to them, can ever come to some day develop a “taste” for Budweiser beer, Marlboro cigarettes, or dark-roasted Starbucks coffee. We do it for social acceptance. We force ourselves to consume alcohol, cigarettes, coffee and even illegal drugs, in order to seem experienced, grown-up, and cool.
These bad habits aren’t self-control failures — far from it. They are voluntary choices, and they are in fact self-control successes. Self-control is simply a tool to be put to some use, helpful or harmful. To live happy and productive lives, we need to develop not only our self-control, but also the wisdom to make good decisions about when and where to apply it.
56. What do most people think causes bad behavior?
A. Being forced by others. B. Not having enough will power.
C. Enjoying their first experiences. D. Following the examples of their friends.
57. The author mentions his experience in the third paragraph to prove ____.
A. will power helps develop bad habits sometimes
B. drinking beer is harmful to the health of teenagers
C. self-control should be developed when one is young
D. everyone can be challenged by different temptations
58. In the last paragraph, the author stresses that ____.
A. without self-control, no one can succeed
B. bad habits don’t always lead to bad results
C. applying self-control correctly is important
D. people can develop wisdom from bad behavior
59. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. My First Sip of Beer B. Do You Have Will Power ?
C. Will Power Benefits Us D. Dark Side of Self-control
