Many of us still tend to think that emotions can affect reasonable thought,  and  sometimes  land  us  in  trouble. But  in  recent  years psychologists have taken quite a different view.Keith Oatley, Professor of Psychology at Glasgow University, is involved in the research which shows the fundamental importance of emotions.

He believes we_are_very_ambivalent_about_them: we think of our emotions as being unreasonable, but we also consider them as essential to human being. For example, Mr.Spock, a character in the television series Star Trek,  is superintelligent and he has no emotions at all. However, he is never made captain of the spaceship.Maybe, this is because Mr.Spock is not the kind of person you can share your feelings with — a person who shows his emotions.

As Professor Oatley points out, our emotions have very important functions, for example, fear. If we cross the road and a car approaches, we usually stop moving or step back. We stop what we are doing, check what we have done and pay very careful attention to the environment. The emotion of fear makes us take this small series of actions which, on average, help preserve our safety.

On the other hand, if things are going well and small problems come up, we find we can solve them with the resources we have to hand. As a consequence, we tend to feel happy and usually continue doing the job.

Anger is an emotion that tends to occur when someone is preventing  us from doing something. Then this small “kit” of reactions enables us to prepare ourselves to be quite aggressive to that person, or to try harder, and so on.

Professor Oatley believes emotions generally occur at these important moments in actions. With fear and anger our emotions make us decide to start doing something else, while with happiness they “suggest” we continue what we are already doing.

68.What's Keith Oatley's opinion about emotions?

A.They affect reasonable thought.                   B.They get us into trouble.

C.They are helpful to us.                                D.They are reasonable.

B.We have similar ideas of emotions.

C.We are quite clear about emotions.

D.We can do nothing about emotions.

70.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?

A.Fear helps us to be careful about our surroundings.

B.Happiness inspires us to continue what we are doing.

C.Anger may urge us to make greater efforts.

71.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

A.we must control our emotions in daily life

B.emotions play a more important part than we realize

C.positive emotions such as love and joy are good for us

The songs for the dance are a kind of indirect expression through which the characters can express thoughts. In the past year, the number of parenting contractsstatements signed by parents agreeing to bring their child to school — has gone up by 41% to 6,861. The number of courtissued punishment notices went up by 12% to 7,793 last year.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families said that part of the rise was due to a ban on parents taking their child out of school during term time to go on holiday. The Labour government has a target to cut truancy (逃學) by a third, but the current rate of unauthorised absence in England is a third higher than in 2001.

The government has introduced tough new permission to force parents to deal with their child's truancy. Parents can be fined, asked to sign contracts, or ordered to make their child go to school. Finally they can be sent to prison. The first parent to be put in prison was Patricia Amos, from Banbury, Oxfordshire, in 2006. Separate figures from the Ministry of Justice today show that 133 parents were put in prison between 2004 and 2011 for failing to prevent their child's truancy.

Children's Minister Delyth Morgan said, “It's important that we back schools and local authorities in using these powers to deal with problem pupils and bad behaviour. They rightly make parents take responsibility for their children. These latest figures show that schools and local authorities continue to make good use of these measures.”

David Laws, the Liberal Democrat education spokesman, said, “While parents need to take responsibility for their children's behaviour and have the duty to ensure they attend school, truancy rates across the country remain sky high. What is needed is a more effective local approach involving parents, schools and the police. Extra money to cut class sizes and provide more onetoone support will enable teachers to work with individual children and make sure that they are occupied in the classroom.”

I'm walking along a river bed in California. The future stretched out ahead, in the valley, hills and mountains. The past is there too, but today I prefer to walk forward: to live “in the now”, and truly see all the good things in the world. Light clouds float high in the bright blue sky, and the sunlight shines off the house in the distance. People ride bicycles on the bike path that follows the river. They talk and laugh together. What a beautiful and peaceful  scene it makes!

My heart is suddenly full of joy as I remember it is New Year's Day. A day to start afresh and to feel gratitude for the gift of life God has given me. I pass by a man holding his son, one or two years old, whose face is a study in pure joy and wonder, as he looks out over the green hills and towering mountains. Tears gather in my eyes with the sweetness of this simple thought. A man sits gazing into the distance. In this lonely scene, I'm reminded of other days in the past when sadness and hopelessness were my only companions. I say a silent prayer for him, and thanks to God. Then I walk on.

A young couple crouch (蹲) next to a bicycle that has dropped its chain. As they look up, I smile and say “Happy New Year”. They smile and wish me the same. It is a simple thing, but for a moment we have become one with the world and a sudden joy takes my breath away. An old woman leans on a fence post. She doesn't seem either happy or sad, just gazes into the past, or maybe the future. A feeling of timeless peace flows through me and all fear of what the future may bring disappears. I thank her with my thoughts, and move on.

I walk by a stand of young trees. A loud burst of cheerful chirping (唧唧叫) from the little woods, and I can't help but laugh out loud. As I reach home, I say another thanks to God for the gift “now”. It has taken a long time to find it, and although I can't keep it with me all of the time, I know how to open the door again. I know whatever the New Year will bring, there will be joy and enough love of “now” to help me through the hard times we all must face.

Happy New Year!
