I began to grow up that winter night when my parents and I were returning from my aunt’s house, and my mother said that we might soon be leaving for America. We were on the bus then. I was crying, and some people on the bus were turning around to look at me.  Young people are grabbing their passports and trekking around the world on their own, not because they have no one to travel with, but because they prefer to go alone with only their backpacks.

Kristina Wegscheider, from San Jose in California, the US, first traveled unaccompanied when she was at college and believes that it is something everyone should do at least once in their life.
