In a new study, Boston University researchers have found that butterflies show signs of being affected by climate change in a way that is similar to plants and bees, but not birds, in the Northeast United States.

"Butterflies are very responsive to temperature in a way that is comparable to flowering time, leafing out time, and bee flight times," says Professor Richard Primack. "However, bird arrival times in the spring are much less responsive to temperature." As a result, climate change could have negative implications for bird populations in the Northeast, which rely on butterflies and other insects as a food source.

While the effect of climate change on plant and bird life cycles in eastern North America has been well examined, studies of the effects of climate change on insects are rare, so these findings represent an important contribution. Another unique feature of this study is its use of data from museum collections as well as data gathered by the Massachusetts Butterfly Club, a group of dedicated (專注的 ) citizen scientists who are interested in butterflies. Use of this data gave the researchers an opportunity to compare butterfly flight periods dating back to the late 1800s.

 The researchers found that the start of the butterfly flight period advances, on average, by two days for each degree Fahrenheit (華氏溫標) increase in temperature. Mike Henry has a two-hectare farm in Palmer, Alaska. About a year and a half ago, his goat Millie was giving him a hard time. She didn’t want to be milked. Instead, she kicked her back legs and stepped into the bucket that was supposed to catch her milk. But there was no milk to catch. All Mike Henry got was tired hands from his attempts to milk her. But he also got an idea. He designed a goat milking machine that does not require any electricity or motors.

The Henry Milker is a hand-operated vacuum pump. It attaches a tube to the goat. After a little pumping, the milk begins to flow. The process uses a closed system to keep hair and dirt out of the milk. The milk goes directly from the goat into a box that is then placed in the refrigerator to keep the milk cold.

Milk Henry has sold his invention to hundreds of people, mainly small farmers just like him. He at first considered spending more than one thousand dollars on an electric milking machine. But that seemed like a lot of money to milk just one goat. So he began to develop a device of his own. He worked with parts that he bought from an auto supply store and a Wal-Mart store.

London Underground

The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At that time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot, as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in the first year.

Dear Mr. President,

I would like to personally thank you for your time and concern for our great country. I would like to take a few minutes to address a few concerns that I have with the United States.

First of all, I would like to address the war. In my opinion, we should have never been involved with Iraq to the extent that we are now. I believe we should pull our troops out. However, I think there should be a timetable that we follow but the timetable should not be released because the enemy does not need to know when we are going to pull out. Also, the war takes out a ton of our money, which leads me to my next issue.

The economy right now, in the opinion of many Americans is the biggest issue with which we are facing right now. No one can predict what will happen one day or the next. The obvious thing to do is to put 700 billion dollars in the economy, but that bill failed and was rejected by the House of Representatives. Instead of putting 700 billion dollars in, I think the money should be equally distributed among Americans to pay off their debts. I’m not sure if this would work, but I think it is a positive alternative we could take.

My final issue I would like to call to your attention is teachers’ salaries. The high school students of today are America’s future. In a way, America’s future depends greatly on the high school teachers of America. Saying this, it is sad that teachers’ salaries are where they are. While teachers are working harder and harder every day to teach high school students, CEOs of big companies that are driving our country’s economy into the ground are getting bonuses. I’m not saying that teachers’ salaries should be the same of CEOs of companies, but I do strongly believe that action should be taken to increase the salaries of teachers because they have one of the most important jobs in America---preparing our country for the future.
